I think when the soldier is shooting at the bamboo spider is also a reference to MGS, its very reminiscent of the first person view of the Ak-47 in MGS 3 Snake Eater which also takes place around the same time.

Maybe if he spent as much time refining the script as he had putting useless video game references in (Besides the journey one, that one is quite cool) then it might have been an actual good movie.

Kong was alright, too much corny comedy but still alright. All i hope is that this will be a great start to the classic kaiju spinoffs. Godzilla v DESTOROYAH!
