Things You Only Notice In E. T. As An Adult CeltycSparrow: Two things I feel compelled to add to your list. Firstly, I heard in an interview with actress Drew Barrymore that when she played the role of Gertie in the film, director Steven Spielberg wanted her reaction to E. T. to be completely genuine. so when she bursts into Elliott's bedroom and sees E. T. for the first time, her reaction is genuine, because that IS truly the first time she has seen the puppet and it scared her. Ironically, later in the movie when the surgeons are working on E. T. we see little Gertie sobbing as she watches the horrific scene unfold. Those were real tears. because by that point, as Drew Barrymore says, she didn't see E. T. as a puppet. she saw him as her friend and it scared her that they were hurting her friend.
The second thing is, you mentioned E. T. is terrifying. Here is the irony of that. I am 33 years old and I remember very distinctly when I was a child and even now as I watch this movie through the eyes of an adult, it was never E. T. that scared me. He was just this sweet little alien trying to find his home again and that house where Elliott and his family lived was like a warm, safe bubble. I only ever got scared when the men in space suits invaded the house and were hurting E. T. its like Gertie said. they were hurting my friend. lol

I saw it as an adult and had a lot of questions then, like: why were the kids pedaling their bikes as they flew through the air (I think one of the talk show hosts asked this at the time. I suppose it had something to do with green screen or blue screen technology, but I thought it looked goofy. (I also had to chuckle when the boys were in the garage, looking for things ET could use to make a communicator, and picked up their dad's shirt. They sniff it and one says Sea Breeze---which was a women's body wash. Are we sure Dad took off with his secretary---or maybe the guy from the mail room?

You forgot to mention one thing that always bothered me as an adult. In the beginning of the movie when Elliots brother and his friends are playing a game at the table (possibly D&D. There is a cloud of cigarette smoke sand a cigarette burning in the ashtray. I dont recall the mother smoking at all, so WHOS SMOKING? The kids? I mean it WAS the 80s so anything is possible

one of my cousins thought Elliott called Michael peanut head in the scene where Elliott said his nasty zinger at Michael. and when mary laughed after Elliott said it, that was a blooper. even thought dee Wallace, who played mary, knew henry Thomas, who played Elliott, was going to say it, she still had to laugh when he actually said it

Everybody is saying they were scared of ET as kids. I LOVED E. T. AS A KID! The only part of the movie I didn't like was when the government almost killed him, it was SO SAD. I cried my eyes out as a kid, and as an adult too lol. The commercial with Elliot grown up and ET coming back was AMAZING and I hope anyone who loves ET has seen it!

Funny bit of trivia involving the famous Resses Pieces scene: Originally, Stephen Spielberg wanted to use M&M's, but the Mars company thought ET was too ugly to endorse their product. Cut to years later, and Mars is still kicking themselves, while the Resses company enjoyed the epic product placement.

I mustve been a weird kid because E. T. never scared me. In fact, Im baffled by how many people were frightened of him! The whole movie was neutral to me, even comforting in some places. During the screaming parts, I honestly thought the kids were playing a game with him.

As a kid I had a life size leather E. T. toy. That ugly mofo stayed in the cupboard as I was shit scared of it. Even though I liked the film.
Me and U. E. T. could never be friends.
Bet it would be worth something now though.

ET. one of the silliest nothing boring films ever created.
A Spielberg miss.
And yes I know it made money.
Don't care. Saw it in the theater and realized even a great director can make crap.
Enjoyed 1941 much better

I use to be tariffed of E. T when I was younger. I would have dreams where he just watched me. And then dreams where to takes me to a place that is on fire. I still have these dreams but not as often as I use to.
