Because they are shit in making movies. All those veteran Hongkong directors moved to Hollywood for better pay. Never bother to watch China movies nowadays especially the fantasy one. Everyone is so heavily make up face like dolls. It aint matter when they got bashed, dirted, blown, all their costume, face is exactly the same as when the movie started. Not a single sand! It's as if the director was told that the marketing teams are ready to sell the costumes on market once the movie is finished, so dun you dare to dirt it! Watch Great Wall movie and compare the costume and facial make up between Chinese and Western actor. Judge yourself, which one looks more real than fake.

Good effects, and the outline of the story seems good - it might just be a case of incredibly bad marketing, time and time again movies that flopped at theaters on release go on to become successful at international release - or even become cult movies after people start actually watching them (as opposed to relying on reviews) and decide they kinda like these films

Start with a small budget and make a low budget movie first
then remake it over and over again every 3 years. And add some sequels. Spend more time in audience retention. Asura 1, asura 2, asura 3, asura 4, asura 100.

This looks like soulless corporate garbage. Also modern Chinese fantasy films tend to look the same, with uncanny visuals, an homogenous cast consisting of unblemished 19 year olds with tons of makeup and no facial expressions, cool poses, CG mascots, etc. I have no idea when this started, but it was very different in the 80s

blaming bad reviews for it's performance? That's a new one on me. I mean yes, they can deter people from seeing it, but didn't think a studio can take any legal action because of it, if think a movie is bad, you think a movie is bad, and TOO BAD for the studios if people think so. The term Asura is a Hindu mythological term for demon clan. Just like Avatar is also a Hindu word. The story used in this movie is famous tale from Tibet, whose people are living in exile in India. Movie is a disaster because everything about this was copied by China n made in China. Enough said.

everyone wants a good movie, good story, good acting, good drector etc.
if they think that high budget movie it's all important, just make a movie with all gold material on set. and put dumb in charge like this one movie

How about the Mythos isn't elegant. If its Buddhism, it belongs to that faith. Making a weirdly, unappealing, mix, because it looks ripped off from Guardians of the Galaxy. Maybe, they were hoping the Chinese domestic market would be good with this?

this movie is base on a Tibet legend, and for some reason they China govement really like to drop the ball on Tibetan monk.
