Amazingly the best Robin Hood ever was the TV series in the 1980's called (in the UK at least) Robin of Sherwood starring Michael Praed. You could almost believe that it was filmed in the 12th century. The locations and costumes were amazing, and looked authentic, the actors appeared authentic. The bad guys weren't just one dimensional, they had feelings, they had motivations that went beyond just greed, and the good guys weren't perfect either. The action scenes looked believable, and the hero didn't do super human things. because he wasn't a superhero.
The tv series had comedy as well as dark moments, and sometimes the good guys lost and the bad guys won. In other words people could relate to it. It's difficult to relate to Robin Hood in the movies. He's one dimensional, the bad guys are one dimensional, the story line is obvious, the plot barely exists, and the movie makers rely on the special effects to 'sell' the film.
If the plot is good, and the story telling is good, the special effects only need to be there to enhance the story, but the story could probably be told without them without doing too much damage. But if all you've got is special effects. then you have a bad movie.

This movie is a failure because of pointless overstylization comparable to ridiculous gangsterrap musicvideos, breaking immersion every second even within the trailer, and tasteless clichees en mass. you smell from a mile away that none of those characters and actions will be believable in that setting.
Even in movies like Assassins Creed or certain fantasy flicks, where the plot is ment to be modern style meets the past, it didnt work and was ignored by the audiences. Producers who cant learn from recent failures like Ass Creed or King Arthur: Legend of a turd have no right to blame a bad release date or audiences lack of interest. Leaning on CGI, cool stunts and overacted trailer lines made like Fruit by the Foot is not enough! Even when done for allmost idiotproof franchises it will most likely end up far behind studios expectations as Solo or the DCU could teach anyone.

The problem I see with a lot of modern remakes is too fold. 1. Arrogant writers that discard what made past movies great because they can do it better and be more witty and engaging. 2. Rebooting a classic means you're going to have to impress an older generation of viewers, yet these directors constantly seem to go for glitz, explosions, and snappy one liners rather than adding a new dimension to an already known story. I saw the movie yesterday and I can't deny that it looked spectacular at points. Yet the dialogue is dumb, the plot is horrendous, and I didn't care about any of the characters. Instead of trying to make eye candy maybe the creators should focus on telling an engaging story and having interesting characters lol.

This looper review has it all wrong. people did not like it because it changed a great story. Not that people are tired of robin hood. This movie reeks of political correctness. Its like a propaganda movie for communism. The original story, fight against a treasonous tyrant and restore order to society. This movie, the story is, become a treasonous communist that wants to bring down the white man. While you do that make sure that you rid yourself of your religion and cultural and unique heritage. Wow! This poison that Hollywood is pushing these days! When is it going to stop! Please return to mind set that patriotic and supportive to the majority of the viewers!

Of course this movie was going to bomb at the box office. A movie in which a Muslim or Muslims are rightfully depicted as victims of a series of wars launched against them by the Pope and in which the western economic system is criticized for its failure to render justice to the common people can never be successful in the countries who still maintain the same Islamophobic prejudices, which caused Brexit and brought Donald Trump to power, and which still maintains the same pro-rich, anti-poor economic system. So how could this movie be successful when the people hold the same prejudices as they held during the Crusades!

This is pretty much a perfect breakdown. I went and saw it. The first thing, it really was up againsts some BEAST films. Terrible decision to release it that weekend. Creed II basically grabbed all of it's potential audience. Secondly, it was a mess of a script. As I'm watching it I was waiting for it to get good. It wasn't bad. Just not good. And it could have been great. Taron DOES NOT have intensity. No idea what that director is talking about. He's a great comedic/action guy but this needed a bit more bravado in places. When he was supposed to come across as serious it just fell flat.

You can make a good Robin Hood movie. It's not a big deal to make a new one or even put a slightly different spin on it.
As this stated, we've seen a lot of Robin Hood on the big screen. That both makes it familiar, but also something people are clearly ok with seeing again. This one just tried to be too different. Focus on capturing the core elements of the story, keep the budget modest, and find a quiet release window to drop it in. What you shouldn't do is try and make it a big class revolution, heist, and superhero movie. Just make a Robin Hood movie.

I didnt see this, but it wasnt because Im bored with the story. I love the Robin Hood story. It was that this movie looked like it was trying too hard. Part of the charm of the RH story is its simplicity and romance of the outlaw hero, but all the flashy over the top battle scenes in this rendition really turned me off from even wanting to try it. Robin Hood is not supposed to be an epic battle movie.

You forgot about adding today's politics to yesterday's heroes. People are tired of ham fisted messaging and preaching. The people on your side already believe and are bored and walk away. The lesson that Hollywood should learn from this is: stop trying to make historic tales hip and modern. It didn't work with Arthur and it didn't work here! Make historic movies that actually feel like historic tales. make them epic and not into a modern heist film with quick shots and hasty action.
