Who thought it was a good idea to make Chewie a cannibalistic murderer? Probably the same genius storyteller who made Lando a robothumper. Giving beloved characters these dark or perverted back stories ruins the characters.
Disney really have no clue about Star Wars. They thought they could make money by making any crap and sticking a Star Wars label on it

According to cannon, Solo meet Chewbacca when Solo is in the imperial military academy. Chewie is a slave and Solo saves him and they escape. And Chewbacca have since been in his lifedebt.

If he is 230 years plus and seems somewhat middle aged he would likely live to around 500 years naturally, if he leaves for a couple years at a time it would seem shorter if you lived six times longer.

Easy he was young when Yoda rode on his shoulders, adult when he met up with Solo. Early drafts and original story have him as about 200yrs old at the time of A new hope. See, all done.
