While he's presented as a simple extra-dimensional pain-monster in the original Hellraiser, later movies in the series dive into Pinhead's backstory, revealing that he was once a British soldier named Elliot Spencer who served in World War I. Ali: The Hellraiser movies are soooooooo underrated. They have so much more backstory and depth than other movies of its genre and era. The universe is actually quite involved and complex. The imagery alone had these movies staying with you, and freaking you out for days after watching. A major pioneer in the gore sub-genre.

I prefer for Pinhead to NOT get a backstory, it was not necessary. Maybe that s why the first film worked better than the rest of the saga (and mostly he was not the true villain but Frank and Julia)

Except in the first two films the Cenobites actually protected the girls from their uncle and his girlfriend. going so far as to sacrifice themselves to try and save them. so. he's not ALL bad.

Never realized how much the Berserk manga/anime had taken from Hellraiser. The whole God hand and Behelit needed to summon them is very similar to the Cenobites.

I've read that Pinhead is an Aztec mythological God that went by the name Tlatlauhca a. k. a Xipe Totec (Our lord the flayed one)
