I read elsewhere that Tom wanted to pilot the f18 in the film, and trained up for it, but the Navy said nope. All the flying scenes with him and his costars are from the second seats, with real Navy pilots at the stick. I love that he tried to convince the Navy, and the scenes still look amazing and convincing to me.
