I will say that I found it odd that the two main black characters were both antagonists.
But I also have to say that the two black actors were the best out of the cast, whether it's just their talent, or that they fit the roles so well. I'm kind of curious if their roles were intended to be cast with black actors, or if this was colorblind casting as only the Addams Family itself has any kind of established race, so the makers would have been free to just hire the best actors for certain parts.
Also, I'm not sure Bianca is a mean girl. She's popular. She's an antagonist from a competing hall (think Griffyndor v. Ravenclaw, but she's not really doing anything wrong. She's allowed to find Wednesday too full of herself, the same way Wednesday thinks Bianca is a bit of a B. Bianca is a rival. Bianca beat Wednesday at fencing. Bianca saved Wednesday at the final confrontation. She seems to be being positioned as Wednesday's equal, who is allowed to be good at stuff and better at stuff than the main character. And this is a good thing. I much prefer that to Wednesday operating in a vacuum where she never gets any push back from other people her own age, and she's just clearly better than everyone else. I think she's also on the road to potentially being one of Wednesday's best friends. And while the series ends with a hug to Enid (who was also well cast and played, if not the best written, Bianca feels the the true person who could stand shoulder to shoulder with Wednesday going forward.
Lucas is a bully, no question. But he also gets a redemption arc where he starts to question if he's doing the wrong thing. And going into Season 2, his dad is now dead. It's unclear if he has a mother or if he's going to be on his own, but whatever the case, there's room for a really interesting arc in what happened to him, whether he continues to be an antagonist or gets some more permanent redemption, it seems like it has potential to be a good part. Good or bad person, Lucas's journey will be complicated if the show chooses to go into it.
Does the internet really want to tell black actors that they can't have actual good complicated parts because they might be the bad guys? Because this is a show where their work will be seen. They get to work with Tim Burton, Christina Ricci, Catherine Z-J, Guzman, Gwendolyn Christie, etc. This is an exciting job for a young actor that might open a lot of doors. And you're saying they shouldn't walk through it?
And also, just to check, the actual villains? Both white. The guy kind of obsessed with Wednesday? White. Bianca's clique? I think 2 are white and 1 is Asian. Lucas's two other gang members? White. Bad psychiatrist? White. Family of Villains? White. So that's 11 other negative roles that are all white, and 1 that might be Asian (she was wearing sunglasses, so I'm guessing based on hair. Kids bullying Pugsley in the beginning? I believe all 3 were white, though I'd have to watch it again to know for sure. Unreasonable principal? White. Unreasonble mayor? Black. Unreasonable sheriff? White And out of 20 antagonists total then, 3 were black. Oh, woe, woe is me.
Meanwhile we have 1 white girl who forcibly befriends Wednesday, and 1 boy Wednesday feels responsible for whom I'm guessing is Hispanic. Those are really the only two characters it seems are clearly good outside of the Addams Family itself.

Having only watched the first episode so far, many characters seem hostile and antagonistic. One kid tried to murder her, a sheriff with a grudge against her father targeting her, queen bee girl, town guy calling her a freak, the boys attacking her. Again, just the FIRST EPISODE.
Being real here, screeching was likely going to be happening regardless. Fictional world of vampires, werewolves, creatures, the supernatural, magic, criticism of religion and people of history, macabre painted humor, all the things.
Regular people: Yes! More Addams family stuff! And from what I've read, it's popular among giewers.
If someone who watches it and their take away is, they have a few black people being hostile and antagonistic just like white people in the same show. Pff, that's racist. They're not responding to anything genuine, and get more attention screaming foul than appreciating actors parts in something new and unique for the times.
They're the equivalent of people who throw themselves onto an approaching vehicle with ambulance chasers on speed dial, and their chaser's are outrage professionals. Most of the time there's no winning because there's no THERE there to begin with. And sadly, the more famous the person saying it, the less likely their fans will really oppose it and just join the outrage. Not all, but enough that the bad press, regardless of whether or not it's legitimate, could end the continuation of a project or the greenlighting of future projects.
Just hope they don't ruin our chances of getting a few more seasons.

They try to tear down a perfectly fine show just because everyone loves it. First, they said it wasn't diverse enough, then they said it was racist because all the black characters were evil. First, Wednesday became friends with Bianca and Lucus later in the show. And Lucus wasn't really an evil guy; he was pressured by his friends. Wednesday was mean to all characters because she wasn't social. She was also mean to both of her love interests. Second, the mayor wasn't evil, and he was black. He was trying to bring peace between the people of the town and the school. Kinda like an old black figure who has a national holiday that I know.
Why isn't the mayor allowed to own a museum centered around pilgrims? The museum is important to the town for economic reasons. It's an essential part of how the town gets money besides the school's donations. But people would rather talk about cultural appropriation than the fact that there is a black character as the mayor. Like what an accomplishment that is, but no, they would rather bash him because he's trying to keep the town afloat by using a museum that's been a part of the town longer than he's been alive.
People who don't support this show are just reaching now. And it's falling flat.

Bianca ends as a heroine, and will most likely continue as a main character judging by the way it ended, the mayor died but was a focal role, his son got a lot of airtime and if you ask any actor they will all tell you that they enjoy getting bad guy roles, it always takes a lot of ability to play them. Are these virtue signallers trying to say that Black actors shouldn't be allowed to get choice roles? Don't they realise that each of these actors auditioned for these roles? The main protagonist in the Sabrina remake was also black not that that has any bearing on her acting ability, but if you don't get the title role the next best and most remembered roles are usually the bad guys, i swear the people who sit around objecting to things like this only do it because they are bored and interfering in people s lives is the only way they can entertain themselves. Try watching the shows you are passing judgement on. if i had any problem with this show it would be that gomez was too much unlike all the other adaptations of gomez addams but thats why its an adaptation and not a copy. On the whole its a great fun show and just weird enough for me. Ten out of ten

If the critics endure the story arc to the conclusion they would realize the importance of Bianca's journey. Her interaction with Wednesday evolves and the resolution of the plot depends on Bianca and Wednesday settling their issues and working together. Lucas also matures over the course of the series to become a deeper character that will likely be further explored in a season 2. Since the characters throughout the series have elements of darkness in their character arcs, there are internal battles between their positive and negative natures. Wednesday, for example, is a budding writer who, if it wasn't for her using art as an outlet, might become a psychotic killer because of her lack of remorse. There are certainly issues to criticize in the series, things that could have been done better, but if you write a critique based ont he first two to four episodes, as it seems most critics have, it misses the extended story arc that leads to outcomes that contradict their criticism.

Why are people so sensitive? We can see that Bianca, at first, was like the antagonist but turns out to be the hero of Wednesday. The son of the mayor, at first was a bully because of his peer. But we can see that after some episodes that he isnt bad at all. The main antagonist is white. Common people, it isnt the movie that is racist. It is our mind(the way we think is bad about it. Lets just enjoy the show and dont be too sensitive. We asian were drawn as dirts of the east, laughed at etc. but we are just looking at it, if we are dirts then lots of westener marry eastern people so you know, people will say anything just to spark a conversation whatever but we should only give a damn to things that really matter. The world knows that in every places there are bad and good people. White, brown, yellow, blue, green, pink skin haha

Wow. These people really miss out on the idea of context. For one, it was a bit refreshing that the 'alpha female' wasn't just a blond haired blue eyed mean girl without any redeeming qualities or depth. For another, the mayor wasn't 'celebrating' pilgrims, he was milking the predominantly white tourists of their money in the American tradition of capitalistic opportunism and in a cheeky way was 'sticking it to the man'. And no, Mr. Jackson, you weren't the first and Billy Dee Williams could attest to that. These narcissists and their need to tear others down for their own self affirmation over manufactured slights is becoming tiresome.

Okay for this show only, I don t watch all of of his work, I believe all the characters where bad or questionable. Well not the roommate, but everyone else! The boys that Wednesday got expelled for were all white. All of the Big Bads this season were white. In fact I could argue that diversity was the main point of the bad guys. They didn t want anyone different in there town and they were fine with killing them to make sure they were gone. Also if you really watched the show both black characters ended on the good side and even apologized for there past behavior.

Hey, if you want realism for the show. we're talking northern Vermont. I'm surprised there were as many black characters as there were. I'm from New England. My high school had 2 black kids, and they were brother and sister. that's not me being racist, that's reality of the demographics of the area. That being said, both characters in question had redemption arcs, where the white antagonists didn't. White or Black, the residents of Jericho were all dicks who were taught to hate the Nevermore kids.

This is ridiculous. Not all shows should be centralized with this black and white thing, As a foreign viewer I didn't even care what their colors I was focusing on the characters, plot, mystery and etc. Which should be the show is all about not those political issues and besides these issues are better discussed in atleast formal type of media such as debates, documentaries and etc. Not on these fictional stories whose main purpose is to entertain, tell a story and such

I love the show but I kinda understand the criticism. I think if there were more black people in the cast Bianca and Lucas s characters wouldn t stand out in such a negative way even the black pilgrim thing in the plot can be forgivable, it s just a mayor doing anything he can to keep the town running. Put in more black background actors could solve the issue I hope they will do that in the next season. This isn t surprising from Tim Burton tho.

Yeah, this is why you shouldn't just trust the words of official critics (or otherwise self-proclaimed ones. Wednesday hates everybody, but eventually warmed up to her initial enemies.
Besides, in real life, there are going to be people of all shapes, sizes, and colors that will be an antagonist to your life, not just white people.
(Black on black violence, anyone? Or will the snowflakes refuse to admit that it is a problem)

Eh? The villains are literally all white? Tyler, Christina Ricci's character (can't remember her name) and Cragstone are all white villains. Wednesday isn't just rude to the black characters either, she's literally rude to everyone. And Bianca and the mayor's son, whilst being somewhat 'bullies', are still fleshed out and likable. Hell, Bianca even helps Wednesday in the final fight. Idk man, this seems like a stretch.

Just one little misrepresentation in a minor critic's perspective and they feel the need to tear something down like a jealous harlot.
So now the internet is playing the Race Card? Really? It wasn't just the African American actors that were the antagonists,
if they just watch the entire series, then they'd know better. But casting judgements too quickly. shows that humanity hasn't learned a thing.
