An uncertain cinematic future? Bland antagonists? Poor critical consensus? Was one of these the reason the latest DC flick failed to bring in the big bucks this weekend or, all three? Romeo: This is likely the last year that comic films and shows have, if they don't turn things around they may be in a deep hibernation for a few decades again. Things have been too saturated and this past few years we've been getting trash or mediocre media from both DC and Marvel. I mean a lot has been a hit or miss. SUICIDE squad and Peacemaker was awesome, but Black Adam was meh. Then Black Panther was ok, not great. Quantumania sucked.
I'm not saying this is over because it never is. Look at the 70s (if I'm not mistaken) with the rise of Batman TV show and that merch, then the 80s and 90s with the rise of cartoons like Xmen, Batman the animated, then Batman the movie, etc. Then came some hiatus due to bat nipples, until the late 2000s with Blade and Ironman that it rose again. So I think it may just need to die down again so that we as consumers don't get too fatigued with it and also give these execs time to get their stories in line again

Zachary Levi rather over-did it with the I'm an adult looking superhero with a child's mentality. The main appeal with Billy Batson in the comics is that he is innocent and naive, not obnoxious and impulsive. I get that he's a 17 year old with typical 17 year old issues but when Billy is more mature than Shazam, something is surely wrong here. It's as if the Wisdom of Solomon went backwards instead and made him dumber. The fact that we also have Freddy being his virtual twin doing the same naive mistakes means that we have double the issues. Freddy hasn't even grown as a character.
Mary is supposed to be the mature Marvel, the mom of the group. Instead she's wearing dark glasses and nursing a hangover during a team meeting. Yes she should hang with people more like her age, but we never saw it. No scene in college/school where she's with the over 18s, heck she isn't even seen driving or drinking.
Could it have killed them to have some kind of honey store or organic shop near where they found the unicorns? The kid is cute and all, but honestly if they took away her powers and removed her completely I wouldn't miss her.
Why is the Wizard so helpless? He is drained of power, yes but he is literally a Lord of Order who isn't tied to myths and creaking knees. We didn't get Nabu in the Black Adam movie, maybe for good reason.
no one really punished the Daughters of Atlas for the museum incident- pretty sure all those people died, and they didn't care. That and the Stephen King-esque shield probably took out hundreds of people.
Hades was a rebel against their grandfather Cronus- but their father Atlas was a rebel against Zeus. Plus Hades is their cousin, not their uncle. Also he has never actually rebelled against Zeus.
The movie did ask an interesting question- why are the Hesperides 3 different ages in appearance? They are assumed to be triplets in Greek myth. Also, what is the story behind the black apple in the library? why is there only one? How did Hespera know how to navigate the maze of doors?

It's not superhero fatigue. You can keep people coming back to movies if they are written well and they have a good story. We keep getting fed garbage though, and no one is hungry for more. Hollywood hires it's writers and directors and actors with a racial/gender/wokeness tickbox list, rather than from the most talented people they can find, so the movies are made with a cringe-inducing, virtue-signalling agenda, rather than an entertaining, money-making agenda.
Not sucking should be the aim, rather than intentionally pounding the audience with your 'Message'. We've had it with 'The Message', and now we don't trust you to leave us the hell alone anymore. You did this to yourselves. Hollywood probably just needs to die and get out of the way, so that people with the aim of entertaining a mainstream audience can take over and tell good, fun, decent stories.

I have a sneaky feeling that Shazam 3 WILL or has been already greenlit and star Zachary Levi and feature Mr. Mind, Savannah and Mr Tawny with SPECIAL GUEST STAR: The Rock becase even the whole Shazamaliy can't beat them unless Black Adam helps! Just the way Levi keeps having meetings with Gunn and come out saying he thinks he's alright way BEFORE the movie opened and the Rock said Gunn didn't want him in PHASE 1 because Shazam 2 would be in PHASE 2. Just saying. What do YOU think?

The fact that Warner Bros and DC has basically bailed on the old guard of movies so that James Gunn and Co can do their new take on the comic book lore is pretty much why nobody really wants to watch this movie. I don't think it's bad. I think it's now irrelevant overall. And THAT is the problem. The reshaping of DC movies is what has doomed Shazam 2. Not the quality of the film. Just the reality of the franchise moving forward.

Perhaps the superhero movie has gotten stale. After all, it peaked with Infinity War. And once you've reached the top, there is only one way to go. Film genres come and go, It may be time to focus on other types of movies. And instead of plowing 150- 200 million per movie, perhaps it might be better to spend less, make smaller profits, and move on to the next project. This is a formula that has, so far, worked for Blumhouse.

Why are they even surprised. The most famous actor in that movie was Lucy Liu and shes a side side character and its past her prime Ofcourse it will flop in the theatres, nobody knows the main actors. The first Shazam was great cause its an origin story. Also the most special part of his super power is just his transformation His powers are all generic. People want something new

DC and Marvel have done Superhero movies to death and dug up the corpse and buried it again. They need to go away for a while. There is no anticipation or desire for poorly done superhero movie. The last good superhero movie was Spider-Man No way home. But that movie was also supported by nostalgia for the earlier Spider-Man movies.

Seems as though everything was planned out before the director was even hired. It's why the director took his money up front. He saw all of the writing on the wall. Executives have a fiduciary responsibility to their investors, but need to know when to take a back seat when it comes to the creative integrity of storytelling in movies.

For me it's just hard to care about DC films, especially when they're kind of rebooting things but also not. The DC films are a mess but they aren't doing anything to deal with that problem. I'll stick to the mcu, might not be as good as they were but at least I know where I stand with each film and know what I'm getting.

This movie doesn't look very appealing. From the trailers it looks like the bad guys are a bunch of old women. Plus having multiple Shazam characters rather than just one doesn't seem interesting. And most importantly, I'm just burned out on super hero movies, especially since most have been pretty garbage lately.

Wasn t bad but wasn t amazing either. The plot was messy, some fun action and funny moments but pretty forgettable. In fact the most memorable thing about the film was one kid got so scared by the opening museum sequence he had full blown meltdown and his mum had to take him out of the cinema

I just saw this movie yesterday and I thought it was alright I guess nothing special but not bad Shazam is like Antman too cheesy and corny for me but found some good spots in the movie the way they wrote some characters (looking at you Freddy) was so cringe and annoying I found him annoying.

Well, for me I lost all interest in the movie when I learned the line, I just threw a truck at a dragon! My life is awesome! Was scraped. That line was the reason I wanted to watch both movies. A child's excitement took a bashing by 'fans', now I don't care anymore.
reply

I thought it was good. Better than the first one. The end credits were incredible. There s a ton of great movies out now so it s probably just getting missies. The movie was too long. And the dragon was ridiculously loud and annoying. Terrible super villains.
