Anyways, Niles decides to dress up as Martin, which is initially really touching because, you know, his dad is his hero. A lot of the humor in the episode comes from this Niles-as-Martin schtick, with Niles appropriating Martin s curmudgeonly personality and his mannerisms.
However, as the episode goes on, Niles starts drinking and, in character as Martin, certifiably drunk, refers to himself and Frasier as disappointments. Suddenly, the air is taken out of the room and Martin chastises Niles for ever thinking that he was ashamed of his sons. It stops the episode dead in its tracks and I can honestly say I ve only watched it once because it s truly difficult to watch, even the earlier lighthearted bits because I now know where they re headed.
