The Real Reason We Never Got A Firefly Revival

There are few single-season shows out there in the 'verse that have quite the same cult following as Firefly. But will the space western ever get the revival it deserves? Well, we hate to damage your calm, but the chances don't exactly look good. I'd love to see a continuous of the show and Alan stepping into the role of show runner. Alan is an amazing actor (see Doll House) but after seeing con man I think he'd be great behind the camera because we all know why

My understanding is; Fox basically, Low-Key cut Firefly off at the knees. With terrible, almost non-existent marketing & all the other reasons listed in the video.
They (supposedly) did this because they wanted Joss focused ENTIRELY on his money-making, Buffy series & Angel series. They (reluctantly) approved Firefly because it was a passion project of his and they didn't want to risk pissing Joss off! But then they subtly sabotaged it to get him back to working on what THEY wanted him to work on!
As much as I LOVE Firefly, I don't really WANT anything NEW to come out! No remakes, revivals, or whatever and it is TOO LATE for any new seasons!
The time for that to happen would have been 10 or 15 years ago! (the cast are no longer spring chickens anymore after all)
Oh, and what we have is HALF a Season! NOT a full Season! (this was network TV, and seasons were about 23-24 episodes long)

Its kind of stuck in a bad spot right now: after having only aired one season and being off the air for two decades to come back it would really need a total reboot. but the shows hardcore fans don't want that.
To come back what they need to happen is for either a couple of the original cast members to either completely retire from acting altogether or to pass away so that the topic of a revival becomes pointless. which might have one thinking OK, so maybe 10-15 years from now? but by then all those hardcore fans will either be passing on from old age themselves or if not they'll be firmly in an age demographic that advertisers have no interest in.

Firefly was very, very overrated. Fox didn't help the show by airing the episodes out of order. Plus Joss Whedon's habit of constantly reusing the same tropes had River turning into The Slayer before the first season ended. So you had no real tension on any characters being bumped off. It's also kind of a mess and brown coats is a little to close to brown shirts which is a historical faction we never want to be associated with or rise up in history again.

Fox really missed a huge opportunity with this show. It absolutely had the potential to go 10-15 seasons and become a franchise that would make Star Trek look like Gilligan's Island. It is easily one of the top 5 best Sci-Fi television shows ever produced. The stories were superb, the production top notch, and the actors were amazing. I was so pissed when it got canceled.

Whatever comes back from the dead WON'T be Firefly. It's WAY too late now. It's legacy is to be a really good shot series and a complete failure to recognise what the studio had on its hands. They blew it BIG TIME. Current hollywood isn't capable a pulling off a revival anyways.

I always felt that someone could see how big this show could get and worked against it. The whole style about it was so fitting. I'm afraid too much time has passed.
Maybe they could make two more movies.

reply

They could start up Firefly again but with the next generation so the Firefly s crew kids and use flashbacks to fill in the original storyline whilst continuing it in the present

I wonder why. Somehow She Hulk and Velma are getting a season 2. Some shows get 10-20, and most of those have medium quality. But we could not have just a little more of Firefly.

It would be great to see more Firefly but how long has it been? After a time it just seems unrealistic to try and resurrect what once was a great show. Possible but very rare!

First time I watched this was on Netfix, I think. I was so hooked and was ready to watch the next season. When I realized there wasn't going to be another, I was devastated.

I always find that arguement of having 2 sci-fi shows on one network to be complete bull, how many police proceedurals or medical dramas do they have going at one time?
reply

If Joss Whedon gives the ok I'm sure fans would make episodes to continue the series, hopefully some of the actors would come back, at least Nathan Fillion

The show sucked, and Whendon sucks, glad Firefly died, and it will stay dead. The best part about Serenity was The Operative, Chewitel Ejiofor
reply

We don't need a revival. What we need is a time machine to fix a mistake and continue the original series for at least four more seasons.
reply

does anyone really think Rupert Murdoch's network would not sabotage a show about independent people standing up to an authoritarian regime?
reply

I remember back in the day the real hardcore fans 'the Brown coats' getting mad about the cancellation. Seems like a lifetime ago now.
reply

Hope the bring it back never seen it but the fans love for it is definitely interesting hope they bring og writers and cast
reply

Still love this show and movie. If they brought it back today, it would be a massive hit. Assuming the writers did a good job.
reply

I will not watch anything that is involved with the Mouse. Such a revival is guaranteed to not be true to the spirit of Firefly.
