Top 10 Feminist Moments on Sex and the City

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Sex and the City was ahead of it's time in these moments! For this list, were looking at some of the best girl power moments from the show, but were not looking at any from the movies. Weve included moments like when Carrie marries herself, when Miranda and Samantha buy their own apartments, when Charlotte chooses her choice, when Charlotte takes control of her reproductive future, when Samantha fought workplace sexism and more! Special thanks to our user M. D. W. submitting the idea on our Interactive Suggestion Tool

I dont think that Carrie marrying herself was very feminist. I think that Carries friend was actually right, it is not her responsibility to come up for her extravagant lifestyle. It is okay to ask your guests to take off your shoes I think and that Carries shoes got stolen wasnt her fault. I didnt feel like there was anything feminist about it. Yeah, you pay a lot for your married friends when it comes to wedding gifts and stuff, but isnt it quite expensive to pay for a wedding either? I think Carrie questioned that entire system only because it was abour her shoes and just wanted to find a way to get them back, she wouldnt have cared any other way. And forcing a friend to buying you a pair of expensive shoes is just rude, not feminist.

The attitude to abortion here really annoys me. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe that women have the right to choose. But I also believe that truly independent, empowered women take responsibility and if they don't want children, manage contraception intelligently. Of course you can't control all circumstances, which is why women must have the right to choose, but that's a huge decisions to take. It seems to me the attitude here is that it's no big deal to use abortion as a type of contraceptive and that's just wrong.

Charlotte quitting her job was not a feminist move and shouldn't be on this list. Yes, it was her choice to quit, but the reasons for her choice had nothing to do with feminism and everything to do with fitting into a mold of being a perfect wife. We see that she wasn't totally comfortable walking away from a job she loved and that quitting was just one step in the process of her slowly giving up her identity to please Trey. Miranda was right when she told her to get behind her own choice.

Point no. 10, Carrie didnt have to register for her wedding gift, the woman owed her the total amount of her luxurious shoes. The woman didnt have any problem with cigarettes being smoked inside the house, near the kids, but she had problem with people coming in her house with their shoes on! Wow! But yeah its a great feminist moment to celebrate herself and being single not being married to a guy.

Getting married to yourself is so empowering and it screams girl power and not needing a man or children to be happy. And I'm all for it. Something I'd totally do. That's why I like this show so much to this day. At the end of the day, no matter how much they enjoy having a man around, they have themselves and they have each other. It's beautiful.

Hold it Ms. Mojo your number 5 is a contradiction on your Carrie is the worst list you had this same situation. As Carrie shamed Charlotte for NOT offering the money to help her with her financial issues. She ripped up the money from her booty call and then wanted her friend to pay for her problems. Not empowering at all.

I kinda see 4 single women in their mid to late 30s choosing each other for soul mate bcs they don't have men in their lives more of an act of despair rather than feminism. And Carrie rejecting Aidan more of being a lousy girlfriend rather than being strong. She already said yes to his proposal before, didn't she?
reply

- Having an abortion is not feminism, it's irresponsibility.
-Carrie should have said Yes to Aidan.
She also should've accepted Big's money to pay for her apartment.
-And I don't think Trey gave up on having a child, he just don't want to stress as much as Charlotte is doing.

Nothing 'FEMINIST' about bullying a friend into paying off your debt.
Nothing 'FEMINIST' about making preconceived accusations about someone's reasoning for not hiring you.
Nothing 'FEMINIST' about keeping someone on the hook, especially after cheating on them.

80% of the feminist moments shown on this list has to do with engaging with men. The reason why there was no engaging or marriage is that all the guys shown in the story were betas. Women love alfas, BUT by no means alfa males would be shown in the series.

Miranda was borderline anti-men, Carrie was over the border when it comes to men. Samantha and Charlotte were the most well-rounded and centered. They understood that their friends (Carrie and Miranda) disapproved of THEIR choices but chose them anyway.

Carrie went to Big as friends to learn money tricks. As a friend, Big lovingly lent it to her. She instead bullied Charlotte into offering it, after Miranda and Samantha BOTH offered it to her.
reply

What about the moment when Carrie walked with Miranda at her mother's funereal? That was more of a friendship moment but still she broke the stereotype of having a man by your side
reply

Frankly, the Manola Blanic moment kind off pissed me off. It wasn't a moment of her stopping chasing the love (affection, in her case, she just wanted to corner her friend into paying
reply

i always thought Charlotte was showing the other side of feminism that is often forgotten. Feminism is about having THE CHOICE to be independent not forcing women to be independent
reply

I mean. it is femisnm I guess, what problems did these women go through really besides men opinions on them. Honestly, that was the problem of the show, men's opinions on them.
reply

Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha are the real feminists who are independent and strong. Carrie is just the irresponsible selfish one that depends on these 3 strong women.
reply

What about when they were in Atlantic City & the fat guy said to Miranda, 'move your fat ass! ' & they all immediately called him out & asked him if he was having triplets?
reply

Definitely love this show and it given me lots great mindset when it comes to love and relationship. The most important relationship a woman can have, is with herself
reply

How does making preconceived accusations of someone's reasoning equate to 'STANDING UP TO THE PATRIARCHY'?
Typical pseudo WOKE feminism about 'discrimination'.

I still watch the reruns played on E! Love the Paris episodes. When Miranda says to John. a. k. a. Mr. Big, Go get our girl. I got chills! I love that episode!
reply

I always thought Aidan asked a good question when Miranda was pregnant. If she didn't want the baby (at that moment, why couldn't she adopt it to Charlotte?
reply

When Miranda is looking for a wedding dress and they keep bringing white dresses to her and she says nothing that says virgin. I have a baby, the jig is up
reply

1970's sitcom Maude addressed abortion head on way back in 1972 - agreed it's a subject not many television episodes have been devoted to though.
reply

So Carrie's shoes get stolen and no one does anything? It felt like everyone was blaming her for her lifestyle instead of helping her. Good for her.
reply

Why couldn't she take the money from big just because he's a man? He offered it as a friend and with no strings because he can easily afford it.
reply

3: 56
Except back then they actually needed it.
Charlotte was just an entitled and bratty and needed validation

reply

I didn't like how Miranda treated Crallote. She should be free to choose what she wants with her life. And Miranda was terrible.
reply

And Carrie was also trash for not taking Big's money, buy had no problem guilting Charlotte into giving her the money.
