Top 10 Worst Decisions Made by Harry Potter

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Just because they hold magical powers, doesnt mean the characters in Harry Potter make the best decisions. For this list, were looking at all the times that Harry made an impulsive or irresponsible decision that led to negative consequences. Weve included decisions like stealing the flying car, trying to save everyone in the second task, not asking Ginny for advice and more!
Date: 2023-11-20

Comments and reviews: 30

10. As 12 year old wizards in training who've already taken risks prior to this and more dangerous already, it's understandable that they make the decision to steal the car to get to Hogwarts. Sure it's irresponsible, but what do you expect? I would have done the same thing at that age if I was in their shoes.
9. I'll give you that, however, I'm not sure I'd exactly call it a mistake. You can make the argument, sure, and I might even end up agreeing with it. It's a complicated situation, especially since they're all adolescents and everyone, even a magical folk, makes mistakes during their teen years. Again, complicated situation.
8. He's 14 years old boy and in a tournament he didn't enter himself in, willingly in fact. Plus, he was physically and emotionally under a lot of pressure because he didn't know his friends were in the Black Lake for them to be saved by each individual Champion, I think anyone else would've tried to do the same and not just him.
7. He's a 15 year old kid. Plus, it's not entirely explained in the movies whether or not Cho and Cedric were actually dating. I read the book once and I was in elementary school at the time so I don't remember what the book tells us, but for movie lovers, the Cho/Cedric relationship isn't particularly clear outside of the tournament. As for in the 5th movie, it's also bot exactly clear if Cho and Harry ended up dating or not. And in the scene when they're alone in the Room of Requirement, they DO talk about Cedric, they just get invested in each other since the tension between them and their feelings for the other were growing and they end up sharing a kiss. Sure, Cho is probably feeling a lot of emotion, but Harry is anything but insensitive since he's been feeling a crap ton worse than her since, after all, HE'S the one who watched a good person die at the hands of Lord Voldemort so if anything, she's being the insensitive one because she, as far as those who've only seen the movies, hasn't been traumatized by evil events like Harry has multiple times before already.
6. Again, as a movie lover who's only seen the Deathly Hallows movies and barely read the book, I don't know what the book says, but in the movie, I would consider this BS; he isn't lying to Griphook at all and more so in Harry's defense, Griphook backstabbed the trio since he left them to get caught and arrested by the Gringotts guards. To explain even more, Harry clearly says he's not sure how he plans on killing the horcrux after giving the sword to Griphook, not knowing he's going to be making his way to Hogwarts after acquiring the Horcrux. And he's a 17 year old wizard who, as we all know as Harry Potter fans, is willing to do almost anything to defeat the most evil dark wizard of all time who has ZERO remorse for anyone so Harry does nothing wrong.
5. Okay, understandable. Don't know what a certain spell does? Test it on an inanimate object or use another form of life as a subject like a bird or something, similar to what Draco did with the Vanishing Cabinet. But hey, curiosity killed the cat lol
4. Outside the books, yes, Harry has openly said Voldemort's name, but from the moment Ron comes back on until the end of Part 1 Harry does NOT use Voldemort's name, other than using his original name Riddle. Plus, it wasn't Harry who used Voldemort's name at all that caused him, Rom, or Hermione to get caught and taken by the Snatchers to Malfoy Manor, it was Luna's father, Xenophilias, who used the name. So Harry is NOT to blame for Dobby's death. Movie wise, this is BS.
3. Just because he doesn't like Snape that doesn't mean that he's not willing to cooperate with him at all, that is until the next movie. Based on the movie, he actually does seem to be committing to the lessons. Granted, we only see 2 scenes involving the lessons, but there's still nothing that tells the audience that he's not taking them seriously. And from the first scene we see it to the last there's nothing that tells us how long he's been practicing this form of magic, only in the last scene where Harry says that they'd been at it for hours, which could mean anything.
2. Harry said it himself after the fact I don't think my dad would've wanted his 2 best friends to become killers. Sure, letting Pettigrew escape lead to the 2nd Wizard War, but Harry is a 13 yr old wizard. How was he supposed to know that Pettigrew/Wormtail would go to reunite with Voldemort? Yes, the prophecy did explain servant and master shall be reunited once more, but Harry didn't know that that was Pettigrew and everyone thought Sirius was a servant. So again, this is a mistake that ANY young teen person, even witch or wizard would've EASILY made.
1. 15 year old confused and vulnerable wizard in training who's still traumatized by watching the most evil dark wizard of all time order his servant to kill a good friend just a year before? Yeah, why WOULDN'T he go to the ministry to attempt to save his Godfather's life? He's the only family I've got left and Dumbledore isn't around and only his closest friends are there willing to risk their necks to help him. And how was he supposed to know that Sirius wasn't ACTUALLY currently being tortured by Voldemort? It's understandable!

Very intsting topic!
10 - I agree, that was just little thought of: D Harry's and Ron's adventurous mind comes to light here - whwnever they see a chance to get some unusual action, they take it! Of course, also the positive sides of such character can be seen very often in the story - saving Hermione from the troll, saving Ginny from Riddle, bravely fighting Voldemort and thereby causing the Priore Incantatem magic, taking the challenge to find and destroy all the horcruxes, etc. etc.
9 - I don't remember the circumstances here properly enough to make an opinion of this. I liked book/ movie 5 by far the least of all and forgot a lot about the details there.
8 - similar to 10, though here it should be taken into account that this was a far more serious situation for Harry. And about your argument that Harry should have known that Dumbledore would never have permitted anyone to get harmed - well, on the other hand, Harry hasn't really learned that Hogwarts was a safe place during his first three years, nor that Dumbledore has everything under control, has he!
7 - I completely disagree! If anyone has the right not to speak about Cedric, it's surely a 15-year old boy who has experienced Cedric's murder that close. If anyone blames Harry for this, it's them who aren't very sensitive imo.
6 - what else should he/ the trio have done? If Harry hadn't promised Griphook the sword, he wouldn't have gotten the chance to steal Bellatrix's horcrux.
5 - Hermione is always right? Shall I give you the counter-proofs in alphabetical order? xD
-- Liking Lockhart and just not wanting to see the truth about him
-- Trying to convince Harry in Deathly Hallows to close his mind against Voldemort, when it turns out to be very useful for Harry to have that connection
-- Thinking that the Deathly Hallows can't be real
-- Thinking the elves would be happy about S. P. E. W.
etc. etc.
Hermions is one of my favourite characters, and the fact that she has flaws and weaknesses as well as every other human just adds to her character imo!
Yes, using Sectumsempra on Malfoy surely wasn't a clever idea from Harry. Luckily, Snape was there quickly to help him.
4 - yes, this was another moment where Harry acted before thinking, and in this case the negative sides of this behaviour clearly came to light again!
3 - Well, basically I think that this just wasn't Dumbledore's most clever idea. He always believes that people should be lovely to each other, which I think is a fantastic trait, but in this case he clearly underestimated the anger between Snape and Harry, so I rather think that these Occlumency lessons were doomed from the start.
2 - Here again, I have a completely different opinion. It was very noble from Harry to spare Wormtail even after he Harry had just learned that he was responsible for his parent's death! Well, and I doubt if Sirius's name would have been cleared by killing a man? I would rather think that in this case, he and Lupin would have spent the rest of their lives in Askaban. xD And Voldemort surely wouldn't have given up that easily - even Dumbledore always thought that Voldemort's return could not be prevented forever.
1 - well, I wonder how many people would not have fallen for Voldemort's trick. He had just truly saved Arthur Weasley's life with help of this connection to Voldemort's mind, and he had no reason to assume that the danger would be fake this time. Even Hermione fell for it. I think this was just a very evil and clever idea of Voldemort.

While some of this video has some merit there are 4 things I have a problem with
#7 I its true Harry could have been a little more sensitive to cho about Cedric but so could she have been cho seemed to have forgotten or not truly understand what horrors that Harry went through but Harry seem to forger that cho was Cedrics girlfriend and she needed to talk about him if found way to comprise and if cho had not jumped Into a relationship with Harry Things could have ended a bit better for them
#5 its true Harry should not have used sectumsempra on Malfoy it was one of his worst mistakes and he felt horrible afterwards no mater how felt about Mbut dont forget he no idea what that spell would do plus Malfoy was going to do the Cruciatus Curse
#3 I blame this on snape and Dumbledore while its true Harry could have put more effort into learning Occlumency. He had know idea why it was important if Dumbledore had told him the reason why he might have put more effort into it and snape was a shit teacher who never told Him how to close mind and criticize him all the time
#2 are you saying Harry could see into future how was he supposed to know that by not killing wormtail that Voldemort would come back you cant blame Harry plus Voldemort was always going to come back and as Dumbledore says The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed. Plus who knows what would have happened if Harry had let sinus and Remus kill Wormtaill things could have been a lot worse
While This video Is interesting you seem to think that Harry Is supposed to be perfect he not supposed to Make any mistakes you seem to forget that he is a teenager and he is still learning he still growing one of the best things I love about Harry is that he is flawed he does make mistakes and JK Rowling puts it I see Harry as someone who is struggling to do the right thing, who is not without faults, who acts impetuously as you would expect someone of his age to act, but who is ultimately a very loyal person, and a very very courageous person. So, in as much as he has qualities that I admire most I would say he is a good role model. That doesn't mean that he is saintly, but then frankly, who is? But I think you do see enough of Harrys inner life, the workings of his mind in the books to know that he is ultimately human, struggling to do the right thing, which I think is admirable.

While under one hand using any tool or weapon when you dont know exactly what it does is a bad idea on the other hand Harry made the right move despite the outcome. Malfoy and Harry were having a fight which isnt exactly an uncommon occurrence in schools between bullies and boys who are willing to stand up for themselves. but when Malfoy began to use an incantation for an Unforgivable Curse everything immediately changed. This would be like a school yard fight where on of the kids suddenly reaches into his pocket and pulls out a gun! So Harry did exactly what he shouldve done in this situation, he didnt hesitate, he didnt stop to think about his next move, he threw out his wand and shot out the very first spell that popped into his head. That reaction couldve saved him from anything from death or being tortured to the point of insanity like Nevilles parents were!

When you said that Harry said 'Voldemort', it was in the books. In the book, Harry, Ron and Hermione get trapped in Malfoy Manor because he said 'Voldemort'. In the movies also, Harry, Ron, Hermione get trapped in the Malfoy Manor. But you should know this: It wasn't Harry who said the name, nor the other two. The person who said the name was Xenophilius Lovegood. As Xenophilius was the one who said the name, he should also be taken to the Malfoy Manor. I think, as the death eaters and Voldemort want to kill Harry so they took him, Ron was a Bllod-Traitor so they took him, Hermione was a Mudblood [ according to the death eaters], so they took her, and when the death eaters came to the Lovegoods' house, they only took the Golden Trio and completely forgotten that Xenophilius said Voldemort's name.

Harry going to the Ministry in Order of the Phoenix for me is largely Dumbledores fault. First of all Dumbledore should have been the one to teach him Occlumency, seen as the only reason he couldnt learn it from Snape was because he couldnt control his emotions of dislike towards the potions master. Second, Dumbledore should have told Harry what was going on after he saw Arthur being attacked, and he didnt even need to tell him the prophecy (because of his fear of Voldemort having access to it by reading Harrys mind, he couldve just told him that he was having those dreams because Voldemort wanted to lure him to the Ministry so Harry could steal the weapon for him. That way even if Harry didnt master occlumency he wouldve known not to be fouled by the fake vision.

my 10 worst decision made by harry potter
1. allowing peter pettigrew to live (cedric is d00med)
2. not shaking draco's hand, they could have started a relationship (drarry)
3. not asking cho chang in the yule ball earlier (harry and cho would be a cute couple, xdd)
4. didn't disarm bellatrix so dobby lives (dobby is forever a free elf)
5. accepting marietta in the da (ya filthy traitor)
6. casting sectumsempra on draco, but only expelliarmus on voldemort (unmerciless)
7. not having a relationship with moaning myrtle (lol)
8. not kissing hermione/luna (harmony)
9. dating and marrying ginny, who got possessed by voldemort and almost killing students
10. didn't disarm bellatrix in order of the phoenix (sirius lives)

Agree to disagree about number 2. If Harry let Pettigrew die, Sirius would definitely not be free.
What he should have done was put a full body bind on Snape, so he'd be unable to do anything but listen to what Sirius and Remus had to say, and I think Snape would have been willing to help when he knew who really sold his beloved Lily to her murderer. Then while Harry and Hermione would take Ron to the Hospital Wing, Snape would take Pettigrew to Dumbledore and Fudge, and Sirius could have stayed with Remus in their animal forms. After that, Sirius would have gotten full pardon and Harry would have lived with him and would never see the Dursleys again.
So the mistake was not letting Pettigrew live, it was knocking Snape out.

Imagine if you will the world has been thrown into chaos, massive amounts of people are dying, you listen to radio announcements of the dead every single day just praying you donNt hear the names of people you love among the dead. and now you have one item you need to destroy in a vault and the item you need to destroy that item and the other hidden ones is the demanded cost.
I know the half lie to make it appear that hes going to give Griphook the sword right away when he intends to keep it long enough to destroy the other horcruxes first is morally a pretty dark shade of gray but under the circumstances can you really hold it against him?

reply

In Harrys defense in the book he was in a wizards duel with Malfoy and Malfoy was preparing to use an unforgivable curse. He did EXACTLY what a wizard/witch should do in that situation. He threw out his hand and shouted the first offensive spell that came into his brain. That was a spell he was curious about for a while so that as the first one he came up with. Just because it had bad consequences doesnt necessarily mean it was a bad decision. Besides as long as Voldemort continued too live he was a massive threat. Wormtails death wouldnt have prevented the second war, it wouldve possibly delayed the inevitable.
reply

All of these mistakes are the reason Harry Potter is so famous and successful and if half of these mistakes didnt happen Harry Potter wouldnt be fun and exciting.
For example if Harry did let lupin and Sirius kill peter, the goblet of fire wouldnt have happened and vodermort wouldnt have regained his full body
The mistakes that Harry made and things he did were the reason Harry Potter is my favorite book
I am not insulting this video but I am just stating that these werent mistakes, they made the Harry Potter franchise amazing, mysterious, fun, exciting and basically the best franchise ever!

6. Lying to Griphook [DH2]
5. Sectumsempra [HBP]
4. Saying 'Voldemort' even though knowing about the taboo [DH 1]

2. Not letting Sirius and Lupin kill Pettigrew [PoA]
1. Going to the Ministry of Magic [OotP]
Wait. none of these have happened in the first book i. e. PS or SS

Harry sparing Wormtail's wasn't really the cause of the Second War. Voldemort would have risen one way or another whether with Wormtail or not. After all he was not really dead there was the Horcuxses and the prophecy it would have just been delayed. If Harry didn't spare his life someone else would have entered the cell in the Malfoy Manor some one else would have the much more strong hand and would have resulted in his death if Wormtail wasn't in Harry's dept.
reply

You didn't mention Harry's worst decision, he shouldn't have asked to be put in Gryffendor rather then Slytherin. Imagine how well Harry could have worked w/ & learned from Snape if he'd been put in Snape's house. Perhaps Harry could have actually become friends w/ Draco & helped him go a different way w/ his life.
This is the great hidden tragic meaning of the Harry Potter books.

reply

To all those telling Dumbledore is guilty see, Dumbledore knew harry would break up from inside that harry is a hocrux, and would kill himself immediately, so he let harry destroy all hocruxes except nagini,
Then enable his self sacrifice instead of killing himself immediately without proper way
VOLDEMORT MUST KILL THE BOY, THAT IS ESSENTIAL. - Dumbledore

Harry is a very good character but tends to inference in things that don't concern him. biggest decision he did was almost attacking malfoy with that dangerous spell. Harry really let me down here, otherwise he's an amazing character. But He can be quite rude and breaking rules and also very judgemental about Snape whom Dumbledore trusts.
reply

Actually - it was a good decision to borrow mr. Weasley's car.
It saved the lives of Harry and Ron on 2 occations: first when the now wild car saved them from Aragog's offspring in the forbidden forest. Secondly when Gilderoy Lockhart seized Ron's broken wand to cast the obliviation curse - which rebounded on himself.

reply

In Harrys defense I had forgotten about Ginnys possession until she mentioned it as well but back, but to turn it back against him for me it had been significantly loner after the long gaps waiting for the fourth and fifth books to come out and Harry had a far deeper and more personal investment in both events.
reply

Every person makes mistakes and Harry Potter is not an execption. Besides. if he wouldn't made those mistakes, the out come would it be different. Everyone was sad when Dobie died, but if the trio wouldn't been at Malfoy's place. Harry wouldn't had Malfoy's wand that contained the power of the elder wand.
reply

Harry said Dead the truth dies with him alive youre free if peter was killed they wont be able to prove peter was guilty if it was a dead body they can assume they just found the rest if the cirpse if alive when exposed they can force him to rat form to provepeter faked his death and is the real traitor
reply

The three worst decisions ever made by Dumbledore were probably:
1. Letting dementors on the school grounds.
2. Letting a retired Death-Eater work as a professor. (We still love Snape)
3. Ignoring Harry in his fifth year thinking Voldemort was inside him.

reply

All of these can not be counted as worst decisions as he hoped the other alternative would serve better. Anyways none is GOD but it's what make you better or worse as a person what you learn from your mistakes. That's what made him hero and true empath.

I love Harry Potter- the books, movies, and the actors. They are all so talented. I just wish I could have the same untarnished, innocent kind of love for the franchise as I once did. Its so hard because of what JKR did Having a fallen idol is really sad

To be honest, if i recall correctly the reason for why Ron and Harry didn't just wait a couple of minutes at the station was because they deduced that if they couldn't get through then by extension his parents couldn't get through either. So ye

If Peter Pettigrew had been killed in PoA

This is wat I don't get:
Harry uses 'Sectusempra' as a spell in the Chamber Of Secrets
Yet in The Half Blood Prince he has no idea what it is because Snape made it up.
Can somebody plz explain that

In #2 if Harry had let them kill Peter then where would there be evidence that Padfoot was innocent? If anyone is at fault is Lupin for not taking the potion that Snape made for him to control his werewolf.
reply

i dont think harry was being insensitive about Cedric, i just think it was a difficult topic for him to discuss with her. it's not easy to talk about it when you see someone die right in front of you.
reply

Peter was fine left alive. but why on earth didn't they put a body bind curse on him or stun him, and move him magically, instead of using shackles when they knew he could turn into a rat.
