The HIMYM-ending as it is, doesn't deserve that much critisicm as it gets.
Barney gets a perfect ending if you'll ask me. He isn't meant to be with one girl for the rest of his life. Have you seen his attention span when it comes to girls? Becoming a father really might be the only thing that gives him inner peace, because as we've seen troughout te show, he does everything he can for the ones he loves.
Ted ending up with Robin makes sense. He never truly let's go of Robin until Tracy comes in to his life. Tracy's death making that the feelings for her come back after six years is quite logical. Beautiful in a way when you relate it to Tracy's life after she lost Max. They both suffered a long time, unsure if they should let a new (or in Ted's case old) lover (back) into their lives.
Ted & Robin over Barney & Robin. Ofcourse. They liked each other from the beginning (ok, Ted loved her from the beginning, while the Barney/Robin-thing always was a bit more created to test the emotions of Ted. Especially Robin liking Barney (where there really were no signs for during the whole forth season, until she heard he liked her and didn't really know what to do) was kind of a made circumstance.
Tracy dying. Yeah, it's not something you like, but death is part of life and the show doesn't run away to deal with that in the climax. And in a way I kind of like that. And yeah, when you look at everything else, it kind of makes sense.
Maincritisism. The build-up of the ninth season. They could've made the final much more emotional if they played their cards better. If they showed more Tracy and Ted instead of the Slapmarra-episode (which is a total disgrace to the show and one of the best running gags, Bedtime Stories and some others.
PS. English is not my first language.

As someone who never watched Dawson's Creek, even I knew (based off fan outcry before the internet was big) that they made the right decision initially.
The Prison Break Alternate ending was technically how the original show ended.
LOST issues are always going to be based around how speculative people thought they were in how correct they wanted to be. No one will ever be pleased no matter how it ended because it would never have been what they assumed.
I like the idea of the Dexter Alternate ending.
I never understood why people disliked the Seinfeld ending as I disliked a good chunk of the series because everyone in the finale were correct in what they said about the main four. Guilty or not guilty they didn't learn anything.
Breaking Bad was perfect as is. They did the right thing.
HIMYM was a show where if you watch the first episode you might as well say you've seen the entire thing. There was a reason the fan outcry made creators put an alternate ending on the DVD's.

Ill say this about the HIMYM ending, I wasnt to mad at it. The real ending that is. I understand that everybody was so mad at it because of Ted going back to Robin and Barney not ending up with Robin and seeing him becoming a dad as a cop out, but IMO, it isnt to bad, and I REALLY stress that its my opinion. I always wanted Ted and Robin together and seeing Ted be so tortured by not being with Robin made me feel so great when they finally got together. And Barney becoming a dad was pretty awesome to me, I tried to see it as more than a cop out and as something new that Barney can care about instead of Robin. Never the less, the alternate ending is still better of course because everyone gets what they want/need, fans and characters alike

I honestly feel that Tracy dying was a necessary, sad, heartbreaking twist. However divorcing Robin and Barney was not necessary atall! We were told from the first episode that Ted and Robin were not going to end up together so an ending with Barney and Robin shouldnt have upset Robin x Ted and would please Swarkles fans. However instead, they created an ending that pleased Robin x Ted fans but pissed off Robin x Barney ones! It honestly made a lot of people upset that Swarkles broke up and not in the heartbreaking, bittersweet way that we were told about Tracy passing away. However the alternate ending would have worked best for himym 100%

If the alternate ending for HIMYM would have been the broadcasted ending. It would have been such a letdown for me.
There is nothing to it. There was no point in the first 3 seasons. No point in the story about Robin. No point in telling his children the story. Hell, there isn't even a point in the Robin/Barney relationship. It would have been a desaster. And you people would have liked it? Good lord. It is true after all: Just give the people a shallow feel-good ending and they will be happy. All just sheep. No sense for story and character. Thank god, you people aren't writers.
LOVE the original ending.

Am i the only one satisfied with the ending of HIMYM? like how it all tied up in the end. Because if the story is really about the mother then 1 season would have been enough to tell it but it took 9 years for ted to religiously justify his future decision to pursue his love for Robin six years after his wife died. He was hesitant because of all the things that happened in the past so he have to tell the story so the viewers will symphatize to why he had to ultimately make the final leap of trying once again with Robin. And that for me is a solid ending to a beautiful series.

Once again when the topic is series finales ever How I Met Your Mother is the worst. Carrie should have stayed single and there should have never been a movie. I will go so far as to say that the entire relationship was not in line with the message of the show that was about how a womans worth is measured by herself; Carrie defined her entire world around a man that mistreated her over and over again because she never stopped him. Carrie didnt stop there because she was complicit in his mistreatment of his wife and her so called soulmates encouraged her and Big.

Number 9 - no. No no no no no no. NO!
Did I mention no?
No one wanted Joey to end up with Dawson. They were toxic together. And Joey and Pacey were so unexpectedly popular, and great, that when the original creator came back onboard to write the series finale he said he had to respect where the characters had ended up, and the journey they had been on, and so he put Joey and Pacey together. Despite Dawson/Joey being his endgame from the start.
So a big fat no to all of that.

I know a lot of people don't like the HIMYM ending, but I actually kinda like it. Yes, I love Robin and Barney together, yes I'm still sad Tracey died and yes, Robin and Ted ending up together was unexpected, BUT that's life. Sometimes you spend a lot of time on something that doesn't work out, sometimes people you love die and a lot of times things happen unexpected. The show always portrayed life in a real way and I think it's great that they didn't change that.

The alternate ending for HIMYM is nothing but a joke and a cop-out from a storytelling perspective, especially since it goes against the premise of Tracy being dead for six years when the story started while doing NOTHING to provide closure. It's DISGRACEFUL that it's occupying the top spot here. I'm delighted that Bays and Thomas stuck to their guns, told their story their way, and ended the series the RIGHT way, namely with Ted and Robin together. :)

Himym the additional ending works out better. the only way that the ending they had in mind would have worked would to be to put less on the wedding and spend half the season talking about the other developments or to give the other things a season of their own to unfold. Otherwise it's just too choppy and confusing with the rest of the show. and a heart jerker to see robin and barney not work out after all of that.

I loved the HIMYM series finale. They subtly hinted at throughout the course of the series that Tracy had died. Barney and Robin divorcing made alot of sense in the fact that Barney was unwilling to change enough for Robin to follow her dreams. Ted and Robin were always going to end up together in the end. They both went and did what they wanted. Robin had the career she wanted while Ted got his family.
reply

I actually like how HIMYM ended but I think they should have made it clear much earlier that Robin and Barney would break up and that Tracey would die ( it wa hinted by all the drawings Robin has with Ted's kids but not enough) this was particularly silly given how much foreshadowing the show did. Sienfield I suppose an acquittal would not have provided a conclusion

Minor point, but I just wish the narrator had said the battle between Jack and the Man in Black rather than between Jack and Locke for the Lost part - I always hate when the memory of Locke is tarnished by the MiB's actions. Even Jack would agree, as in the same episode he told him: You dishonor his memory by wearing his face, but you're nothing like him. FWIW.

I have always loved SATC, but the ending was just a punch in the face and guts. Seriously, after all that drama, she didnt learn at all. Imho, he never loved her and she was always addicted to him being unavailable. It was just bad. Her staying single would have been an awesome ending - such a pity they chose the cheesy Hollywood one: /

You are all wrong! The HIMYM finale wasn't perfect but ot was really good I didn't think it was so good at the beginning but now, after I've seen some videos explaining why it's OK for the mother to die and why its ok for ted to be with robin! I still don't really think ted and robin work that well but who knows! Maube in a couple of years!

If How I Met Your Mother had ended with the alternate ending it would have been a great ending. It is my favorite show but the ending sucked and the ending was memorable for all the wrong reasons.
The ending of Two And A Half Men was the worse ending ever no matter what but after Charlie Sheen left the show it sucked really bad.

HIMYM had a GREAT! ending. anyone paying attention from episode 1 saw it coming. I mean, really, a story supposedly about the mom and the first thing is how ted met and fell in love with Robin. It was there from the start. No matter how many times Ted fell in love, it was always about Robin. The official ending was perfect.
reply

Basically, the Dawson's Creek ending dodges the mistake that HIMYM makes: the show had evolved. In the former case, the writers allowed that the story might not end where they thought it would. In the latter, the writers were so stuck on an ending that they wrenched the plot back at virtually the last minute to suit it.

Dexter should have ended with Dexter sacrificing himself to save Harrison and Deb's lives. It would have been the ultimate way of showing his character's growth from psychopath that has no human emotions at all into a real human being that actually loves something and someone more important than himself.
reply

1-top 1 ending is not alternate but its what really happened, you cant tell me otherwise, Ted and Tracy belong to each other
2-Tracy is not perfect, shes wonderful but not perfect, nobody is, the problem is that her screen time was too short that we didnt even get to know one habit she has

When I watch the finale of HIMYM, I immediately switch to the alternate ending for the ending. It's way better than having the mother die at the end and Ted and Robin to get back together when I personally didn't care if they got back together or not. It's not like they were Ross and Rachel.
reply

the Dexter alternate ending would have been chiched and awful the ending we got was perfect. and the volcano ending for lost would've fallen flat. the finale of BB we got was so bad unlike the rest of the show surely they could've come up with something better
reply

HIMYM is a cautionary tale of why you don't write the ending of your show when you first start your show. True, you should have an ending in mind, but you also gotta be flexible. Alternate ending comes in and we're like Helloooooooo, Flexible!

Why dont you leave timestamps on these videos. I always have to click off so I dont get spoiled. But whats even worse is that in the discretion you say watch out for spoilers and then state a spoiler in it? What type of logic?

I think that the ending to 'Seinfeld' was fine - I mean it was only a year and we all know that they won't change after that year. Besides we know that after a few months Kramer will be running the prison.
reply

The bad thing about the final season of HIMYM, was that they make us love tracy, she was so cute, nice and beautiful that was obvious we gonna get mad and angry when she died. And ted back whit robin: /

I hate How I Met Your Mother ending because it's not Bob Saget at the end even those been his voice for years and the fact that he ends up with Robin the mother might as well been Robin right

I know everyone forgets about 3rd Rock From the Sun but holy moly if you're a fan and haven't seen the alternative ending do yourself a favor and look for it!
