They nailed the period feel but screwed up some of the chess. The grandmaster she beats in the final in Cincinnatti walks into a mate in two. Her game with Townes makes no sense. She plays a ridiculous opening that no-one plays, then they switch to a middle-game that couldn't possibly have come from the opening, then to a set-piece position that looks an awful lot like a puzzle. In her first game against Benny, she plays a really dumb move because she wanted to win - and played a losing move. The puzzle she solves in Benny's basement could be solved in seconds by any competent club player: the black king is restricted, a knight waiting to get into the game, so the white king steps aside to make room. for it, easy. The gender roles of the time? She is a perfect liberated 60s woman, contrasted with her trapped mothers from the 1950s.

This game and this movie is a staple of life itself- you need to know how to play chess- and once you do the movie becomes 10x better seeing the moves how they are played out. 1000s of year old game that unmasterable- only have grandmasters that can see 10 moves ahead, and even they still get beat from something off the wall they never thought of. Art of War is the most basic reading starting off learning chess and then build off matches played from the past as well as playing AI on PC games. im on lvl 20 out of 50 right now after about a week, but i played this my entire life my dad taught me that had been in few tourneys, and I am gettgin wiped by lvl 20 AI here now. I love it

I haven't watched this show yet, I'm a little scared to because I'm absolutely in love with Thomas Brodie Sangster and I'm scared to see him in something that's a little more grown up than what I'm used to. However I have seen the scene where Benny and Beth are in the car together and they're sort of playing chess by calling out letters and numbers and it's absolutely amazing, so I might give it a try just for that. I will say though I've read what it's about and I wish Netflix produced more tv shows like this that are more intellectual than just drama drama drama

I absolutely loved The Queen's Gambit! It's by far the best thing I've seen in years! It grips you so emotionally and takes you on a fun ride of highs and lows. Yet there was no one that made reference too or remembered the 9 year old Orphan Beth Harmon going to Duncan High School and beating 12 high school chest club members. I was waiting for someone in the next 6 episodes to remember that 9 year old prodigy's first chest match! You would think in that chest world someone would definitely remember that. But otherwise a 12 out 10 for an off the charts movie experience!

most people here in the comments are saying its good as it is it doesnt need a second season. Well i would like a season two because what happened after she defeats borgov. i think thats his name at least i havnt seen it in a month but does she get with the guy she had a crush on or does she get with benny or does she do neither. it left me with a few questions but then again even with shows that have a better end i still have question but i would like some answers

This may very well be the best limited series ever. If this had been released as a nearly 7 hour feature film then it would virtually sweep the Oscars -- Best Picture, Direction, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Score, Cinematography, Costume, Production Design, etc. Anya Taylor-Joy's performance is one of the best acting performances I've ever seen.

Benny's character was inspired by Donald Byrne. It's Beth's character that was inspired by Bobby Fischer. The whole story is one of a genre known as an 'alternative history', such as the Axis winning WW II or the Confederacy winning the Civil War, except in this case it's if-Bobby Fischer-was-a-girl as the premise.

I've watched thousands of movies and TV shows over the past 60 years or so. But there have only been two I truly came to love. Casablanca was the first, and now I have The Queen's gambit. Absolutely stunning. Anya isn't any Bogart, but WW2 in africa wasn't a chess match, either.

What a good year for chess, Hikaru Nakamura signs for TSM (first chess GM to sign to an esports team, also GM hikaru focusing on streaming and reaching the masses, top twitch streamers playing chess, and top it all is Beth Harmon.

I really hope they don't make a second season. The series is perfect as-is. It doesn't need anything else.
(Also, I'm not sure what Hogwarts house Anya Taylor-Joy would be in, but Beth is 110% a Slytherin)

Fun fact: Bruce Pandolfini is also the former coach to Josh Waitskin, a chess prodigy and the main character in the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer, and Fabiano Caruana; currently top two in the world.

While I don't think that a 2nd season would work in this series, it could have been about Beth Harmon playing against AI. It's basically two masterminds playing. I would definitely check that season out.

It was very well done. It made more people take a interest in chess. Hopefully, it will make more young people start to play it. looks as if it's made chess more popular. Lets hope it lasts.

ME: buhh always predictable a person clinging to success step by step u realte to them and blahh! inner me every time beth is on the chessboard: plz god help her make her win: D

honestly, im glad that elliot didnt play beth. hes an amazing actor, dont get me wrong, but i think anya is the perfect beth, and i just cant imagine it being anyone else.

Fortunately, I watched this whole series before I read it was fiction. I loved it! I think I have seen it more than 10 times since and it still delights.

Saw a video recently that said all addition was caused by a conflict between attachment and authenticity -- seems to apply to the Queen's Gambit as well.

Harmon was told not to receive anything from Borgov, yet she got the piece from his hand at the end of the final. An opening to a spy theme sequel?
reply

Too bad it's not a movie. As a chess enthusiast this show interests me, but unfortunately I don't have time to commit to a full blown TV series.
reply

Honestly, it's a missed opportunity to make The Queen's Gambit as a movie, Anya could've get her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress

Beth is so feminine and beautiful! I LOVE how the costume designers made her look younger and more feminine and mature over the years!
reply

Ok. would anyone like a tv series about bennys life? I would love that and maybe we could see more of Benny and beths time in New York

reply

Loved it, some chess mistakes that only a chess player would notice but it was the best thing I've watched on Netflix.

Actually the actors had hand doubles to do the moves like Grandmaster Filiz Osmanodja who made the moves by Beth Harmon.

Thomas Brodie Sangster brought a lot of light to an already amazing show! Loved him being apart of this series
