These movies definitely veered away from their source material! For this list, were looking at stories that changed drastically once Hollywood got a hold of them. And we must warn you: spoilers lay ahead! Weve included movies like Less Than Zero, Fever Pitch, Jurassic Park, The Shining and more!

MY SISTER'S KEEPER possibly did well to drop the BIG twist towards the end, which is probably best read in solitude than experienced with a cinema audience; THE PRESTIGE for getting everything wrong, likewise CONTACT; FORREST GUMP that would otherwise probably have been filmed too broadly; JAMICA INN; THE ENGLISH PATIENT for also going against WWII history; ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST - McMurphy on the page didn't have to be such a noisy rebel and wasn't a marauder; right about I, ROBOT but also BICENTENTIAL MAN; THE SEA BEAST silent version of Moby Dick

Ok, so they didnt really explain that in the book, Richard Hammond is a selfish, money loving ass and cares more about the park and the money he will make off it then his grandkids. The whole point of him getting eaten in the book was to have the creator killed by his creations. Theres a whole bunch of changes made in the movie and tbh, i think they both work as different interpretations of each other. The book is also more a cross between all three movies since a lot was taken from the book but put into all 3 movies.

Similarities been Percy Jackson book and movie:
- Character's names
- There's a Camp Half-Blood
- Meeting Medusa and going to the Lotus Hotel
- Percy's hair.
- Mr. Brunner
- The fury attack
- Getting Luke's help
- Going to save Sally from the Underworld
There are many differences but the one that's stands out the most is that they never attempt to look for The Lightning Bolt in the movie and Hades's Helm too. BTW, Hades isn't evil in the book.

Personally, I am in agreement with Stephen King on the failed movie adaptation of The Shining. In having seen the movie years ago, I first thought it was a masterpiece. But after learning about King's opinion in NOT admiring the Stanley Kubrick version, I realized that the movie was NOT the first by the failure of Hollywood filmmakers in NOT RESPECTING the original source material of various authors over the decades.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button should have been on here. The movie and F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story are only similar in the main character and the fact that he ages backwards. Everything else is completely different. However, this is the rare case where the movie is better.

Fun fact: Michael Crichton gave Steven Spielberg permission to adapt Jurassic Park into a movie, before he was even done writing the book. He also helped write the films screenplay. So while most authors are upset with Hollywoods takes on their stories, Crichton didnt seem to mind.

So were not even going to talk about Percy Jackson. See this is what makes me so angry. The movie was so different and so bad that the book series didn't get the publicity it so rightfully deserves and a result it's not important enough in pop culture to make this list.

Master and Commander: Far Side of the World.
I love both the movie and the book, but there are HUGE differences between the two. 1 quick example: in the book, Aubrey is fighting the U. S. Navy, not a French privateer.

After reading the Shining, I couldn't even finish the film. It was nothing like the novel and I hated it. I side with King, they ruined the story. I only hope they do a better job with the upcoming Dr Sleep film

what about Blood and Chocolate? that movie was very different from the book since the setting of where the story takes place, age of the characters, and so much more was changed including the ending.
reply

Im not going to lie, I have read The Hunger Games series, the movie (mostly) focus on the main summary of the book, it was good, however it wasnt the expectations I was hoping for.

The Shining as a book, had a profound effect on me. The movie was boring. I actually fell asleep at the theater. The documentary Room 237 was better than it's source material.

My sister's keeper was one of the most depressing movies iv ever seen in my life 50 shades of grey is nothing like the book nether is a movie called plush
reply

So many people including my dad hate the movie World War Z he loved the book and he was very annoyed when the movie was completely different from the book.
reply

Jurassic Park wasn't so much completely changed from its source material as it was pared down to make the book into a film-length story worthy of its premise
reply

Blade Runner and I Am Legend deserved at least an honorable mention. Those two are far far more different from their novels than My Sister's Keeper was.
reply

The giver, death note, Jurassic park, and Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children should have been on this list.
Well Jurassic Park was

reply

Marnie, The remake of The Haunting and The American version of Death Note should have been on this list, not to mention A Patch Of Blue.
reply

Ready Player One? I mean, given all the copyright issues and with the author co-writing the script, it was still vastly different!
reply

Guess Mary Poppins, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Wizard of Oz don't count do they?
reply

How can one have The Shining on this list and not Running Man which had the names and idea but a whole different story to it?
reply

Percy Jackson should be #1
Cast was good but didn't fit the characters AT ALL and they changed so many of the plots.

reply

I'm sure it's already been noted that Blade Runner & The Wizard Of Oz are like this also. Yes, indeedy.
reply

the first movies that come to mind are Eragon, Percy Jackson & Narnia's Chronicles: Prince Kaspian.
