I saw that Prince performance when it aired and to this day its my favorite live performance of Purple Rain. Not only would you have to see it all to truly appreciate how incredible it was, but you have to realize that before the Purple Rain album and movie, Prince had 5 albums that had hits solely on the R&B charts and two mildly successful hits from the 1999 album. He didn't make many TV appearances and had a cult following. So for so many millions of people, Prince came out of nowhere. They thought the movie Prince was more of a studio act than anything else. They included his peers who were seated in that audience that night, with Lionel Richie as the host. And they all sat in awe of his performance and gave him a standing ovation. When he kicked the mic over during the guitar solo, you can see Cindy Lauper go crazy!

Before clicking on the video i was hoping Prince would be number 1, i've never really considered myself a fan of his, just liked some of his songs, but even i can admit that his performance was without a doubt the greatest of all time. Michael Jackson should have been on the list too though.

I taped that 1985 awards show. Prince, Tina, Sheila E. , Pointed Sisters, etc. It was the best ever AMA show, EVER!
Who knows where that tape is now.
