Three strongly underrated Christmas specials are The Town That Santa Forgot (1993, narrated by the melodious vocals of Bert himself, Dick Van Dyke, about a selfish child who writes such a long Christmas list to Santa that Santa mistakes it for a list from children of an entire town. Poetic rhyming-based hilarity ensues.
Buster & Chauncey's Silent Night (1998, an animated historical fiction adaptation of the story of how the classic German Christmas hymn Silent Night was composed, starring the voice talents of Jim Cummings as Buster and Phil Hartman (in one of his last three film roles, the other two being Small Soldiers and the voice of Jiji in the Disney Dub of Kiki's Delivery Service) as Chauncey, two mice who inspire Joseph Mohr in the writing of the hymn.
And a special one to me, The Twelve Days of Christmas (1993. That Christmas special is notable not only for having Phil Hartman in another major role (as the sheepishly geeky squire Hollyberry, but for being the last TV/movie/Christmas Special to have been written by Romeo Muller before his death. Romeo is notable for being the king of classic holiday-special writers. He wrote the scripts to many classic Rankin and Bass stop-motion and animated TV specials and movies, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph's Shiny New Year, Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Return to Oz (1964, J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (1977, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (1980, the three Puff the Magic Dragon TV films, and The Flight of the Dragons (1982.

The most underrated Christmas special has to be The Year Without a Santa Claus. It's been relegated to Freeform these days, but it used to be shown with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus Is Going To Town. It's a classic just for the Miser Brothers alone. Plus someone else mentioned Emmett Otter's Jug Band Christmas. On the other hand, I love Charlie Brown, but It's Christmas Time Again was sort of lame. While its based on the classic comic strips, they're more a disjointed connection of skits then one cohesive whole. At least I Want a Dog For Christmas, Charlie Brown was a more cohesive themed episode, even it focused more on the secondary character Rerun.

The Garfield Christmas special is A Must for me every single year. I grew up with the Garfield cartoons and comics, and I bought the DVD of all three holiday specials just for the Christmas one.
Arnold's Christmas is a masterpiece. Arnold's selfless determination shines all throughout, but it's Helga's act of sacrifice for his sake that gets me every. Single. Time.

OK, I'm confused. I'm very sure this video is called Top 10 UNDERRATED Christmas Specials. So how is Arnold's Christmas, which so many people regard as one of the best Christmas specials in animation, on this list? On top of the far lesser known Christmas specials on this list?

Imagine. Youre a kid. Youre watching the Garfield Christmas special. Then that scene. That damn scene where the grandma is rocking in the rocking chair, looking out the window, talking about how she misses her dead husband.
Then you cry. And you change as a person.

I still need to see The Christmas Toy. I used to like The Secret Life of Toys which was a follow on series featuring similar puppets like Rugby and the mouse toy but didn't know about The Christmas Toy until much later. We had The Muppet Family Christmas on VHS, though.

How the hell is Arnold's Christmas underrated! Literally EVERYONE knows about that special and gives it the acclaim it receives. Seriously, can someone please give these folks a dictionary to understand what underrated means?
reply

Clearly, I've aged out of the market. Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol was my best pick, as it was the first animated special, which I saw on it's first showing. The song, The Lord's Bright Blessing, will break your heart.
reply

Dude! I love Olive the other reindeer! Also let's not forget the true hero of Arnold's Christmas, Helga. She gave up her boots that she's always wanted and she gave them up to help Arnold.
