We cant imagine what life would be like today if it werent for these women who made world-changing discoveries. Were looking at women who were instrumental in breaking ground, either by discovery or invention, in the fields of medicine, technology, mathematics, physics, and more. Were only ranking women from the 19th century however; classical female scientists will have to wait for another day. MsMojo ranks the most influential women who made world-changing discoveries. Are there any game-changing women we missed?

Another one that should be an honorable mention: Cecelia Payne, the first to identify that stars, including the sun, were powered by nuclear fusion of hydrogen. It had been suspected previously that stars might be fueled by nuclear reactions of some sort, but no one understood how it was possible because everybody thought they were primarily made of iron and other heavy metals, just like planetary bodies. Payne was the first to realize that the sun's spectral lines had been misread; she was ridiculed at the time for postulating that stars were mostly hydrogen (which unlike iron can power nuclear fusion, but she was ultimately proven right. Not sure if she ever got proper credit for her discovery.

My aunt was recruited for the Dayton Project, part of the Manhattan project. With just a master's in Math from Miami University she help isolate Polonium for the Atomic bomb used at the end of wwII. When she met the Physics Professor from MU of Ohio he said I remember you how did you learn so much, she said she had an excellent library at work. Retired from Monsanto in 76 listed Who's Who in america that year as a Nuclear Physicist. She as a true woman of Science

While I agree this list was a long time coming, lists like this infuriate me - not because of their content, but because of further proof of the patriarchy and the misogyny inherent in the STEM disciplines. And when women do pop their heads above the rest, theyre smacked down because of whats not between their legs. Are we making progress? Yes, but not fast enough, IMO. No matter how long and hard we fight, we are still at the mercy of old white guys. Ugh.

I was surprised that Temple Grandin wasn't on the list. Her observations and researched on cattle dramatically changed the way livestock is treating, and then her sharing of her personal experiences with autism changed that arena.

those men taking credit for rosalind franklins discovery and hard work is so upsetting and unfair. and the fact that they were awarded for it after she had passed on is even more upsetting.

One of my favorite females in science is Sue Hendrickson, the paleontologist who discovered the best preserved T-Rex skeleton. I got to visit Sue the T-Rex back in April.
