Javert is not an antihero. He is a man who sees the world as black and white, but cant see that he is the black. He takes bribes from people he knows are criminals and hounds a man that had served his entire 19 yr sentence now that didnt matter then but that was the point. Les Miserable is pointing out the flaws in society. When the truth is shown to Javert in a way that he cannot deny, he takes the cowards escape and kills himself. Showing that he is what he had always truly been a coward, and sheep that couldnt think for himself.

An honorable mention that you missed: Monty Navarro, despite being the protagonist of Gentleman's Guide, is wanted as a murderer and a fratricidal maniac. (I know none of the people he kills are his long lost siblings, but all of them are related to him in some way. And not just because they're all played by the same actor either) And yet, his asides/narration to the audience, comedic timing, and general lovable loser in a rags to riches tale endears him to the audience.

On Billy Flynn - You say twisting facts, I say suborning perjury!
On Erik (Phantom) - First, He had a mother who hated and ignored Him so He had to raise Himself. He had nobody teaching Him right from wrong. Second, He truly loved Christine, but was ill-equipped to deal with it. Third, He acted as He did from desperation to feel affection, something He never felt in all His years. And finally, she DID love Him, but Raoul was the safe choice.

reply

Hooray! Finally, my Phantom is getting the antihero recognition he deserves. I've always thought he wasn't a complete villain because of being an outcast and relentlessly tormented by the public. I understood why Christine left him as she didn't feel safe with his dangerous, nigh obsessive, affection, but I never could condone that she left someone in need of help and love to face the trials of the police alone.

Antiheroes aren't villains that are likeable to watch. They are protagonists that are hard to sympathize with and act heroically for the wrong reasons. AntiVILLAINS, which this list seems to truly focus on, are villains you sympathize with, who perform villainous deeds for the greater good, or the right reasons. Frank-n-Furter and Billy Flynn don't fit either antiheroes or antivillains. They're just fun to watch.

Hello.
Stop called Erik Phantom
Call him by his name.
Erik
ALSO
Christine does not love Raoul. She loves Erik.
Her love for Erik is not getting flashed around for everyone to see, but hidden in the fine details of the musical, such as the lyrics and her body language.
Christine proves that she loves Erik after she kissed him twice in The Final Lair.
Thank you
Have a nice evening

Point of fact, Rapunzel is the Baker's younger sister, not older. So when the baby was born I made my claim. And the Witch also states that she curses the family so that: Your family tree will always be a barren one. If Rapunzel was older and was taken when she was born, and the parents can't have any more kids, where'd the Baker come from unless he's older?

Hamilton! As for judas, no, any self proclaimed christian who tells you they hate judas isn't a true christian. I, for example feel bad for him. And no im not talking about religion because a relationship isn't a religion and if someone here doesn't want to start a debate on religion (I'm not wasting my time wanting to) well i didn't mention the musical so.

Carrie White from Carrie: The Musical. Thats a musical that gets overlooked a lot. Not only is she definitely an antihero, but its also one of the hardest female roles in musical theater. In fact, my local community theater has 2 Carries in their production because of the complexity of the role, and they never do anything like that.

Ummmm. the Leading Player is not a hero. At all. They're a manifestation of suicidal thoughts and depression. And, if we're using the Patina Miller version as an example, it's implied she's going to persuade a CHILD to commit suicide. How are the audience supposed to root for that?
reply

I was kind of expecting JD from Heathers: The Musical because he was wrong for killing the bullies of the school and framing it suicide but he did to help not only him but his girlfriend and believed the only place everyone could get along was heaven

I agree with the top 2, Javert and Sweeney Todd (to me) are interchangeable. Personally I would add Glinda too (from Wicked, she's the antihero in Wicked because she does some questionable things. Like unintentionally causing Nessa's death.
reply

I dont realllly consider the phantom an antihero, I consider him just a touch too much of a villain.
A sympathetic villain to be sure, but yknow, still a kidnapping extortionist murderer.

reply

Phantom shouldve been number 1 in my opinion then Javert then Sweeney Todd I think Amber from hairspray should be on there too and Harold hill should be more then a honorable mention

If you asked me, I could write a book about the first Broadway musical antihero. Oh and Evita doesnt count because only men can be antiheroes?
reply

Many of the Anti-heroes on your list here were featured as villains on or too 10 villains list which was supposed to exclude Anti-heroes.

So I've played three of the roles on this list, and another 5 are on my bucket list. maybe I need to look closer at my casting type. haha

I think Benny from Rent should'e at least gotten an honorable mention, not villain enough to make the list, but still an antihero.
reply

Rizzo from Grease. Her actions are done out of selfishness, until she is forced to confront the reality of what she has done.
reply

Now, Ive never seen Evita or heard a song from in ONCE. ..
But why is, of all people, Che Guevara, the antihero?

reply

Can I just say that Brandon Dixon had one of the greatest portrayals of Judas Iscariot ever? God he was so great!
