Laika was not nearly as famous in the Soviet Union as other two dogs - Belka and Strelka. bc they actually survived and made it back home safe. So they becameFIRST living creatures who safely returned from space. Not only that, but they both lived long and happy lives. Strelka even had 6 healthy puppies only several months after she returned from space!

Balto also got the movie treatment - meaning they made an animated movie on his story. which is astoundingly incredibly underrated.
And even more astounding is that Hachiko isnt in the video; the story of that dog is breath-taking and heart-breaking, the fact he didnt even made into the honorable mentions is disgusting.

Well I'm glad you guys didn't completely ignore Keiko. As a 90s baby I basically grew up with Free Willy and Keiko is what made me fall in love with orcas. He was smart any had an adventure unlike any orca in the world. Even though he died, I am happy that he got to live the rest of his life as a free orca.

I was hoping for at least an honorable mention for contemporary animal celeb Fiona the Hippo.
Also, one of those photos of Punxsutawney Phil was actually Gen. Beauregard Lee, the Atlanta-area groundhog (seen exiting his white plantation-style house.

My heart cried for Laika. She was a stray dog. They took Laika just to help them for their experiments. Laika knew nothing about their experiments. She just wanted to be loved and cared. But they killed Laika in a cruel death.

I miss Koko SO much! But seriously Hachiko wasn't in this list or even Grumpy cat? I mean come Hachi waited for his owner every single day even after he died. I think that should have been #1.

I cant believe you didnt include either Lassie or Rin Tin Tin, who, in addition to being a real war hero, was the first animal movie star.
