Is it just us, or is it getting hot in here? From year to year, decade to decade and century to century - were looking at romantic films that take place in a historical setting that make our hearts race! As such, we don't just mean films set in the Romantic era. These films can be dramas, tragedies and comedies; however, well be excluding mini series like 2004s North and South. Join MsMojo as we countdown our picks for the Top 10 Romantic Period Films

Someone should make a real good movie about Anne of Green Gables. Maybe the first 3 books combined in one movie and it should end with the Wedding Scene from the 5th book ( but the rest was too boring for a movie, even parts from the 2 nd book are too boring, but they can shorten unimportant stuff and side storries. I like the actors and sceenery from the 80's tv films, but they included some stuff that was not in the books and the latest Film where they are older was totaly made up and in a wrong time. And the other Versions were not so good.

Well, hands down, it is Pride and Prejudice indeed that tops the list, maybe we could add Ben Hur, Cleopatra, Ten Commandments, Elizabeth and more recent one Enola Holmes to the list too. oh actually, there are so many, I never get tired of watching period movies, just love getting temporarily transported to the exotic era!
reply

Love Kiera Knightley as always, but I wish you could've at least mentioned the name of Darcy's actor rather then just referring him to as Darcy. He's Matthew Macfadyen for those who don't know. Did an amazing job in Pride and Prejudice and is a the sole reason why I still swoon over Darcy.
reply

Shame you didn't include miniseries. The 2006 Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens is the best of all the Jane Eyre films. Also, no Wuthering Heights with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes? At least you got Pride and Prejudice as #1 with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.
reply

No. That Pride and Prejudice is a travesty to the book. I call it Pride and Prejudice At a Gallop. I agree with other comments, the actors are fine but Keira's other period films are better
You missed Room With A View, Helen Bonham Carter version

Pride and prejudice is a masterpiece that literally made me love literature and adopt it as my future career! Watched it quite more than 45 times and still get goosebumps when I see the entry of our super good looking Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy!
reply

Lists are always difficult but you've named films, including honorable mentions, I've seen & admire very much. I glimpsed Young Victoria at the beginning. I'd add it to the list. Emily Blunt & Rupert Friend are great as Victoria & Albert.
reply

Well, I would have put Titanic in the Top spot it is The romantic movie!
But I love Pride and Prejudice with my whole heart, it is my favorite novel and the adaptation is STUNNING so I totally agree with this list

reply

I will never get over the fact that Shakespeare in love won over Saving Private Ryan and Life is beautiful. What a shame.
(I love every movie on this list but SIL, just didn't click with me at all)

The main charakters from Gone with the wind are awful dislikable. We had to read Effie Briest in school. It reminds me on Gone with the wind. Both female Charakters are just annoying.
reply

Cannot believe the black and white version of Wuthering Heights with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon was snubbed. Most people's perceptions of the novel is from that movie.
reply

Howards End deserved the top 10. Gone with the wind is by far the best of them all, even better than the English patient or Dangerous liaisons. Titanic is very much overrated.
reply

I just watched Pride and prejudice for the first time a month ago and I am so obsessed! It's just perfect. The writing, cinematography, and the actors. It's such a masterpiece
reply

I cannot believe Far From the Maddening crowd made the list. It was a wonderful adaptation. The scenery was stunning too as a Hardy adaptation should be.

So many to choose from. but do you agree with our list of the Top 10 Greatest Romantic Period Films! Which are your favorites? Comment below to let us know!

what i hate about msmojo is that they put spoils in the video, i mean. can u let us amazed in the moment of the movie and not ur trailers >.
reply

I LOVE PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, the book and the movie, absolutly beautiful story. And Jane Eyre, I love the movie, and I need to read the book.
reply

No a terrible list but the best pride and prejudice was the one with Colin Firth. Also Painted Veil should have been on this list.
reply

It's not just Keira Nightley in P&P! You should have mentioned and Matthew Macfadyen who played exquisitely well opposite her as Mr Darcy!
reply

After watching Pride and Prejudice, you dont really care about others, as long as you have seen the masterpiece, others are dull.
reply

The Age of Innocence is highly recommended. So is Wuthering Heights (the PBS mini series with Tom Hardy.
Both hard to beat.

reply

How is Jane Eyre 2011 not in the top 10, I adore that film, I've watched it so many times I can quote nearly all the lines.
reply

LOL I really did chuckle at the disclaimer about excluding North and South. You must be familiar with Armitage fans. :D
reply

I love romance in historical era because its about the ranks of nobility.
I love historical manhwas >-

reply
