Top 10 Unrealistic Expectations We Got from Teen Movies Most everyone I knew Im school had a significant other at some point. And many dated for years in high school and after, and got married to their high school sweethearts. There were also multiple over the top asking out on dates, or to dances at my school. My husbands first wife was also his high school sweetheart, she was 15 and he was 16 when they got together. He asked her to marry him when she graduated high school, by stopping the graduation when they called her name, going down to the football field, and getting on one knee, and got the band to play their favorite song. If thats not a romantic gesture I dont know what is lol. Kind of jelly she got such an epic proposal, considering mine was very lack luster. I feel like in high school kids tend to be over the top with their gestures and proclamations because of all those hormones and youre so naiive and immature. Pretty much all of my husbands friends too are married to their high school sweethearts\r\n

I'm European, I went to high school a long time ago. There were probably no more than 5 kids who owned a car in the entire school. 90% of the boys were still virgin at the age of 18, and probably half the girls too. Around 10% were smoking regularly. More girls than boys.
House parties were akward, with usually 5-6 boys showing up and one of their girlfriend. We didn't have any of those school sports teams. Probably nobody had a job during school months. Most guys had crushes in the school, but most of us just stared at the girls from a distance, we never talked to them. Also, girls in the school usually looked older and cared more about their apperiance.

Accurate for the most part for my experiences but I think a lot of this depends on the school or the area. My prom was extravagant af. Homework didnt really take up a lot of my time because we had free periods. Also almost everyone I knew was in a relationship and some of them got married.
As for the grand romantic gestures. i agree that most high school kids didnt do it randomly like in the movies but some of these Promposals are like over the top marriage proposals and Valentines Day was pretty over the top in my school. This is a pretty generalized list

The romanticization of stalkers is something I will never understand. In anime its Yandere fetish and even in movies its seen as cool. However it's anything but, it's a highly dangerous, serious matter with a very dangerous individual who may have severe mental issues.
You don't know what this person is thinking, what they are capable of and what they will do. It's an incredibly unhealthy obsession and situation. I'm lucky enough to have never been in that situation, but the thought of it happening scares the hell out of me

I had to throw mine in here, one that I see constantly, yet no one comments on- HUGE ROOMS. How in the hell do these supposedly normal, every day teens have houses the size of manors and rooms the size of the bottom level of MY HOUSE? They all have ridiculously HUGE EFFING ROOMS! Like, even the poor kids have way too much space for a huge bed, a bay window with a seat, and a vanity (Pretty in Pink. COME ON! 5 people all have a place to sit, room to spare. That is the silliest concept.

I can say that big romantic gestures it's most common in high school, they serenade their beloved in front of the school, they arrange for their whole group of friends to wear matching tshirts to ask a girl to be their girlfriends and they send huge bouquets of flowers and stuffed bears for a month anniversary, I work at a high school and it happens regularly, maybe it's something just here and it intensifies on Valentine's Day

Finally a MsMojo top which says true things. Due to watching such movies as a kid, I couldn't wait to become a teenager so I could live like that. But when I entered puberty, I realised how different teenage life (particularly in my country) actually is. For instance, even though I wasn't one of the cool guys, I could still be friends with such. If I had been in a teen movie, these guys would have bullied the crap out of me.

Another one I'd add is that, in movies, kids never seem to care about/enjoy going to class. I, on the other hand, loved the education side more than the social one. The other one is that teachers are almost always mean and lame in movies. Most of my teachers were caring, smart, talented, and instilled in me an enthusiasm for learning. I think it's unfair how they're portrayed when so many of them are wonderful!

One of the things that this video didnt mention that annoys me the crap out of me about high school movies is the incessant bullying. The way they portray it in movies is so unrealistic its obnoxious. Yes, bullying still happens, but it isnt anything like it is in the movies. My sister starts high school next year and she thinks shes going to be bullied like that when she goes because of what the movies show

kids r slaves. 17. 5 hours of homework. 40 hrs of school. 7 hours on the bus. plus 7 hrs of chores. that's well over 70 hours a week of free labor. then on their free time. they're not even allowed to do what they want. they still have to listen to their masters. some get jobs and don't know that they're legally not allowed to own anything. so their parents just take it

Um teens do dress nicely, I feel intimidated and my high school had some real parties, like once during my senior year a much of freshmen and Sophomore came to a sr/jr Halloween party and things got so out of hand that the school called the girl who was hosting the party family. Then again maybe thats just private school life.
reply

The biggest cliche for me is, that your schoolmates are actually the ones you spend free time with. I hade my school friends and i had my seperate friends for partying, hanging out and doing bad shi with. But then again. European high school system is very different from US' and we have many different high schools.
reply

Depends on how fast you finish your homework. School is easy if you pay enough attention.
Also I dont think that it makes it seem like everyone is dating. Just that the people we are in relationships are the only ones that matter unless they are specifically trying to make the main character out to be a loner.

reply

I agree the romance thing is pretty weird! Some of my friends did have serious relationships that lasted for years, but most of us didn't have those until we finished school. It's weird for every movie to be about a high school couple who are deeply in love and stay together for ages.
reply

Ive actually been starting to get the idea that television is more realistic than film especially when it comes to betraying marriage. For example, in a movie getting married is the happy ending, while in many sitcoms the main couple has to deal with putting up with eachothers faults.
reply

These movies LIED TO US i remember seeing a few high school movies and tv shows thinking it would actually be like that i feel like this movies are just false advertising because so many kids will actually think high school is like that these movies seriously need to stop
reply

Unrealistic expectations in movies are teenagers who look like adults and behave like adults, because, well, they are written and played by adults. No highschool kid looks like 28 year old with full make up on or six pack 30 year old man.
reply

my most unrealistic expectation is some movies have this amazing girl that doesn't wear a ton of makeup and is actually smart and doesn't wanna be like cardi b. those women don't exist, and it's putting an unrealistic expectation for me.
reply

You got me there. kinda nostalgic though about the past, about something that didn't happened
I don't know
Edit: it's true
Those movies are just the adult fantasizing about how their school's Life could be like

reply

The relationship thing can even make it harder to fit in when you don't have many friends and the movies and your older sibling insist something is seriously wrong with being single.
reply

I'm not sure if this is a reflection of dying education or not, but my school technically doesn't have homework. We have leftover work, whatever we didn't finish in class pretty much.
reply

The example you used for over the top school dances was from an example that was literally a TV set. You could've just used a clip from the Cinderella Story?
reply

This is why they are called tropes and stereotypes. And as for the song advertised it sounds like a song disqualified from The Lord Of The Rings soundtracks!
reply

I definitely got away with a ton of crazy stuff only teens in movies would get away with, but that's because I'm very sneaky and I knew my mom to a T lol
reply

Let's be real, if ALL movies were to depict life as it really is, we'd never watch movies. Cuz, what would be the point. Entertainment is escapism.
reply

God how I hated high school. I did not fit in anywhere. I had my small group of friends and that's it. But even then I was a little bit of an out cast.
reply

Literally never noticed how many musical numbers there were in these movies until you mentioned it. Now I see just how prevent they were lol.
reply

The clothes thing is so true. I went to a wealthy school and everyone wore jeans and t-shirts. The most expensive thing people wore were parkas.
reply

As a Finance manager at a high school you would be surprised how much fundraising goes on to have these very parties fro prom and winter formal.
