I would honestly give On My Own and A Little Fall of Rain a tie because they're almost like companion songs. In the former, Eponine sings about imagining Marius walking with her in the rain. In the latter, she's finally with Marius in the rain, but in this context, it's the blood of her fatal wounds rather than literal precipitation. A Little Fall of Rain is also to the same tune as a song where Marius sent Eponine on an errand to find out about another girl (Cosette) for him, and this connection seems to suggest that as Eponine dies, it's like she's acknowledging that Marius loves another, even though she's pretending he's there for her. It's also a sad song because the lyrics are actually happy. Instead of lamenting her death, Eponine sings about her joy that Marius is with her, and she'll finally fall asleep with his arms around her; her death is the happiest moment of her life. Meanwhile, you can tell that Marius is starting to realize how much he tortured Eponine by using her as a messenger between Cosette and himself, and he feels guilty and wishes he could make it up to her somehow, but it's too late; all he can do is comfort Eponine as he dies. As for On My Own, it's to the tune of Fantine's death song. Fantine also died for someone she loved (but in this case, it was her child rather than a man, so the melody of On My Own indicates what will shortly happen to Eponine. There are also some songs where a character complains that another character doesn't love him/her, but by the end of the show, they're together. This is not one of them. Eponine's love is never reciprocated, so yes, she really is on her own, and she's going to stay that way. quite literally for the rest of her life.

Okay, I was hoping for two songs (Spoilers btw):
1: Stop the World from Come From Away - Diane and Nick meet when their plane strands in Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11. They share a moment at Dover Fault, but have a hard time confessing feelings for each other. Furthermore, they know their meeting cant last. They get together in the end, but its a bittersweet moment nonetheless.
2: Kindergarten Boyfriend from Heathers - Martha sings about how she had a relationship with a boy named Ram during kindergarten. However, he went with the social pyramid during high school, and dies at some point during the musical, making Marthas unrequited love impossible.
Edit: nvm, heathers apparently never made it to broadway

On my own is incredibly beautiful but the song that makes me weep every time is Lily's Eyes from The Secret Garden. What's more sad than a woman grieving over lost love? Two brothers grieving over the loss of one woman. One brother is still grief-stricken over the loss of his young wife while the other brother not only grieves her death but the fact that he longed for her but she could never be his. So many tear-jerker lines from that song but this breaks my heart: She has her eyes, She has my Lily's hazel eyes, Those eyes that loved my brother never me. Those eyes that never saw me, never knew I longed to hold her close to live at last in Lily's eyes.

My number one saddest love song from a broadway musical is Fly Fly Away from Catch Me If You Can.
Spoiler warning
Brenda (the character who sings Fly Fly Away) finds out Franks secret as he leaves from the window of Brendas room and her parents come in with three people and the three people ask her about where he went and someone comes in and tells them that someone saw frank leave from the back and they leave and she realizes that they could never be together.

YES! Why on Earth was POTO left out? When Erik sings Stranger than you Dreamt It telling Christine about the mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing. and the last of the Final Lair scene? OMG! This is what I'm reduced to. Hell, even Wishing You We're Somehow Here Again hearing Christine finally letting go of the grief of losing her father was enough to start my water works again too.

the manic energy of my sister! during helpless is so relatable.
Burn and it's Quiet Uptown and are tearjerkers and tragic songs, revenge and begging for forgiveness, but Satisfied? this is a song of letting go of a love before it can begin. what a gut punch.

Cant believe that If I Loved You from Carousel didnt make the list. The reprise at the end breaks me up every time I see it. Off to see an open air performance in Regents Park later this month. Praying for no rain. And yes, Ill be taking plenty of tissues.

Tears fell as I watched.
I was hoping you included Someone Like You rather than a passing feature.
Also, I was expecting Is it Okay I Call You Mine from Fame.
Still, I cherish and shared this video.

I've been chain watching all of the msmojo broadway lists. After the 3rd time it was number 1, I just always assume Les Miserables will be the number 1 no matter what the category is. I think it's been true about half the time.

She Was There from Scarlet Pimpernel should definitely be on the list or at least honorable mention, its a man being overjoyed that his love (who he thought had betrayed him) never changed at all.
reply

Donna Murphy singing Loving You shouldnt have been a Honorable Mention. Stephen Sondheims Passion (which I saw on Broadway ) blew me away! Donna Murphy is a very kind and modest Broadway superstar!
reply

Heart of Stone should be mentioned because its about a lady whos love is so strong that she stood by someone through all of his abuse and screaming, etc. also, Abby Mueller just sings it amazing

So frustrating to watch. Wish she had stopped talking so much and just let us hear at least part of the songs! Isn't that what it supposed to be about--not hearing her talk!
