I was really pleasantly surprised by this movie, esp after the faceplant that was live-action Mulan. They did their research and had a ton of super legit details in there, totally unremarked, that totally didn't even need to be there but were because they were dedicated to really representing Chinese culture. Like that whole mooncake-making scene was so detailed it was practically a cookbook. And the glimpse of randos group-dancing on the street to exercise -- anyone who's been to China would recognize that phenomenon. And even little things like when Fei Fei finds Chang-E in the chamber of exquisite sadness, she's wearing all-white, which is the traditional mourning attire in China (not black. Or that midautumn feast table with the lazy susan! It's not even just the hairy crabs, but if you look at what's on the table, that is pretty much exactly what you might see at a big family feast. It was so detailed I even pinned Fei Fei as not just being Chinese but probably from the Jiangnan region, as the dishes on that table were classic Shanghai/Zhejiang cuisine.

I mean, cool, but are we gonna talk about how John Cho, Margaret Cho, Sandra Oh and Ken Jeong are Korean, NOT Chinese? I appreciate the representation, I really do, but when they treat us like we're all one thing ALL THE TIME, it sends a mixed message. They could have set the story in Korea, but NOOOoooooo. The director, co-director and writer are all White on top of that, which isn't a bad thing by itself, but it's another layer of insult to injury. Looks fun and the singing sound incredible.

I watched it when browsing Netflix because I thought the bunny in the promo looked very adorable and a lot like a rabbit I owned when I was a teen. It was a good movie, but once again it left me with the same burning question: Why are all children movies so tragic? Like I know children's movies can help children deal with issues, but why are themes like a dead parent more common then another child stealing your crayons? They're all bittersweet and downright depressing at times.

This movie was ok. It wasn't amazing and it wasn't bad. There were a lot of plot elements that didn't make sense and were not explained. The animation was good, and about what I would expect from a non-theatrical release movie. In short, it wasn't as immersive of a story as Moana, and it wasn't as gut-wrenchingly emotional as Coco, but it's good. Not good enough to watch more than once in my opinion.

i think the characters dont look like Chinese lmao. Feifei father looks soooo Korean. Fei fei and bro looks so tibetian. Chang Er kpop dance. Feifei mom spirit look a bit like Chinese/Pocahontas. Chang Er lover Chinese/korean. Chang Er western style Chang Er. The highlight is when Change Er finally meet lover that song 1/2 broken Chinese. I wanted to laugh. But i know they are trying.

I was watching the movie over a week ago. Over the Moon wasnt as predictable as I thought it would be. The animation is just on the same level of astonishment as Soul. Rocket to the Moon gave me a bit of How Far Ill Go vibes. And the story is just beautiful to match the visuals.

Even though it is a great animated film with musical elements, I would say that the Spanish academy award winning animated film Capture The Flag is the superior one (despite that one received rather mixed reviews like El Dorado)

Wheb I watched this movie, I loved it. But I cried my eyes out at the scene with Houyi not being able to stay with Chang'e. That scene alone reminded me of Lebanon in Supernatural after they learned that John couldn't stay.
reply

Oh God this movie made me cry 3 times! Even in the beginning of the movie it wasn't even 15 minutes in and the animation and music was just beautiful and moving also. THAT CHANG'E MUSIC PERFORMANCE WAS AMAZING!
reply

When we lost our love one's, we need to and we have to move on, don't change don't be sad but it's okay to cry' that's how I feel when my MOM died. Whenever I miss her I just look up to the moon.

I really recommended this movie! It has a good plot, memorable music, great animation and characters, and I loved the representation. The dedecation adds a while other layer of meaning too.
reply

I was disappointed in this film. I like the animation that Glen Keane offered and some of the Chinese cultures it has in it but it feels like another animated film in the past decade.
reply

I was so taken away by Ultra Luminary with Chang-ers extravagant introduction. And it really touches to my Chinese heritage and the traditional stories I listened to as a child.
reply

Lol I watched this and cried so much and my little cousin said WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK JAI! ITS NOT EVEN THAT SAD! And i said Well you havent lost a family member in your life yet!

I watched this on the weekend. It had me crying in the first few minutes.
Also, I thought the music sounded like it was made to be on stage. It's so good.

reply

I love over the moon because it was really good she found way to move on something she thought she could never but it made me cry so much.
reply

This beautifully made film with great music. Having Glen Kene, a Disney creator directing the film certainly explains its Disney feel.
reply

The movie is amazing. The music are catchy, the visuals are kind over the moon and the story is cute. We need more of this movies.

Do you know that China just launched its 5th luna mission named Chang' E (#5, and luna surface vehicles are called jade rabbit
reply

The movie itself is fantastic, as is the story, but the psychoanalytical nonsense is drivel. Let a movie be a movie.
reply

I absolutely loved Guinevere, so that alone is enough to watch this. Then add in Phillipa Soo, and it's even better.
reply

Girl knows how to build a rocket, but never thinks of was air to breath and that it was just a myth or doubted it
