A comedic show is a horribly poor setting for dealing with serious topics. Sure, Boy Meets World managed to pull it off perfectly practically each and every time. But they dealt with realistic topics that effected the majority of the population, instead of those meant to pander to the extreme politically correct crowd. Having a famous Hollywood actress who was clearly born female playing the part of Chandler's trans-gender father was incredibly insensitive and downright insulting.
Also, you guys missed the heart-breaking moment when Emily kicked Ross to the curb. over the phone. Even though as he said, he's willing to cut people out of his life whom he's known for many years.
And, how about an Honorable Mention for Janice. Although usually played as a horribly annoying joke character, why does Chandler get a pass for the terrible way he treated her over the course of the show? Janice truly loved him, she was loyal towards him, treated him very well. Chandler sure as heck didn't treat her well at all. Okay, she had a really annoying laugh. Other than that, she was a good woman. Chandler always thought he was too good for her. In reality, the opposite was true.

I just started rewatching the series 2 weeks ago. Currently on Season 2 Ep 6 The One With The Baby On The Bus
5: 45 I definitely can agree with how the handled body issues & fat shaming Monica.
6: 52 Really loved how there was a focus on the unconventional family. Phoebes speech to Ross & Susan about how Ben is being raised by 3 parents was very poignant. It nearly made me cry.
10: 07 The Gender Stereotype issue with Ross was super annoying. I just watched the episode where Ross would not let Ben play with the Barbie and wanted to reach through the TV & punch him in the face.
11: 14 I cried when I first saw this episode.

Monica and Chandler are among my favorite TV couples. They act like real couples actually would (minus a little bit of Chandlers weirdness) My favorite scene between them is when Monica gets pissed that Chandler doesn't want to spend his entire life savings on the wedding and he puts his foot down. He does in the end capitulate but when he outlines his dream for the future Monica realizes that they have the entire life together and their wedding is just a party. It outlines that, while important to a person's life, a wedding is just a party and your family is what you should facilitate the growth of. They balance each other well

Yeah gay marriage I think for the most part people feel it's controversial and honestly there are a lot of good reasons as to why it should be controversial
Redesigning the nuclear family pretty much destroy society
There's opportunities to have a civil union which is pretty much the same as marriage for the most part.
I think it's an insult to marriage. I'm not politically correct and I'm not inclusive I don't mind people living their lives how they want but forcing society to accept it and to put it up on a pedestal is kind of ridiculous.

No hate but I feel like some of these issues were handled terribly by the show imo. Like transgender rights: chandler uses the wrong pronouns and never fully accepts his father as trans. The body issues with Monica was also handled horribly because she's always made fun of for being formally fat. For the alcoholism: Monica literally starts to over drinking to try and handle dry Bobby which is a horrible thing to do. When someone is quitting drinking they need support not someone who is doing the exact same thing.

One that sticks out to me is how much Chandler and Monica's house hunting affected Joey. Everyone had things going on in their lives propelling them and Joey felt he was being left behind and even afraid he would be forgotten. but then Monica and Chandler surprise him by making sure he had his own room in their new house. reassuring him that no matter what, he is loved, and that no matter what, Joey is important to them and he will always be a part of their lives.

The social the nuclear family should be the norm. Without normalcy you have no society.
I'm not saying you can't have a grandma and a grandfather raising kids.
There are many types of families but my point is if you remove the nuclear family there's nothing left of society
I can say this because my major was actually cultural anthropology along with diplomacy.
Societies have to keep going the way biologically they were meant to be.

I just love Friends in any way. The series are so. Alive. They are funny and eye-watering at the same time. I love that any kind of humour and any kind of issues are there and the variety of characters and loved and disliked, they're not perfect at all.
Now there are many more tolerant series, made on a highest level, but they don't stay in your heart for such a long time.
IMHO

We often hear this quote says A girl may not be the queen to her husband but is definitely a princess to her parents.
But this quote just got opposite in the show chandler treated her like queen and her parents never treated her with the same love and affection as they did to ross but after her marriage with chandler she totally got that love, affection and care that she deserved.

I think that despite the portrait of the Trans father of chandler did not agen the best, it was so heart warming that chandler invited his father to the wedding accepting and forgiving him instead of just denying him and just make the character a source of jokes and punch lines, the real message with the reaction of the actress was Amazing
In my humble opinion

friends honestly teaches you a lot (thats why its one of my favorite shows) but it most taught me that life can be very unpredictable. you may never know what you gonna get! there are a lot of plot twist that may happen, and its about how fun & memorable you'd experience throught out your journey! like look at the character development!

Although Friends did tackle serious issues, they didn't have main POC or LGBT+ characters throughout the show. Other than Carol & Susan, or Chandlers parents. Just six white best friends living in New York. Times have changed since the late 90's, and change is good. Friends was and still is, a great nostalgic show nonetheless.

The problem with Chandler's dad (and why Chandler ignored him) was why this happened. If Chandler ignored him because he was hurt by the divorce, and he broke his image of a perfect family, that would be more ok. But Chandler implied many times that it was because his father was in a drag show.

Love maybe love but what Carol and Susan did to Ross is unacceptable!
They pretty much ruined his life, they could've been more nice to him. especially Susan who refers to him as a sperm guy!
When I first saw that as a child, it made me hate gay people!

I always thought Helena Handbasket was a drag persona. In the last few years, people have said Charles Bing was actually transgender, which is great if true, but I guess the show set him up to be a drag performer instead. I guess Im confused on that one

They WERE On a break. Was it kinda sleazy for Ross to immediately go for a rebound-bang the same night, sure. But, technically, it was not cheating. Rachel herself even used the term breakup the next morning with Monica. I will die on this hill, lol!

The fertility issue always touched me. Now, years later, my husband and I are struggling with fertility issues. It means all the more seeing our struggle portrayed like it is in friends. It let's people have a glimpse of what we are going through.

Suicide, statutory rape, stalking, mental health issues, molestation, cheating/adultery, money, homelessness, crime, assault and death. These are fairly serious topics the show dealt with. But yeah, dudes expressing emotion. So serious.

the big one I always think of is monica's relationship with her parents(especially her mother. I think that she was emotionally abused by her mom her whole life, always treated as if she wasn't enough or was a bad daughter/sister

Surprised that Ross' mental breakdown isn't on the list.
It's played for laughs of course, but he's a very successful man, and he takes a large amount of time off to address his mental health.

What kills me is that they never tackled racism in the show and I'm not necessarily surprised due to the fact that the creator stole the concept of Friends from a black show called Living Single

I feel like Phoebes childhood deserves a solid mention. Her mothers suicide, her father leaving, homelessness, dishonesty, so on and so forth. Not even to mention her history with Ursula!

Obese Monica and Chandlers dad plotlines did NOT age well at all. I know its a sitcom but it really bothers me, that tired old joke, the fat character is always eating something.

Guys hugging is not a serious issue. Most guys don't have a big problem hugging other guys who are their best friend, at least not guys I know.
