Cultural differences on subjects like puberty and growing up shouldn't be taboo or made extremely uncomfortable, but this is the result of generational trauma and religious beliefs thats forced on to kids, to hide away from these things and to make them feel bad about these changes and ignoring their feelings, conditioning people to behave in a certain way around it, instead of being up front about it. It's only awkward if you make it awkward to talk about these subjects that are important to a child's upbringing, their development into adulthood that will inevitably happen, and _waiting around for the signs to happen_ before it happens just isn't possible, everyone's development changes start at different times than others, and when you should bring it up before they discover these changes and it'll ease their process into these changes, which you really should discuss with your children, and then they'll be more easily able to come to you with questions when it does happen. Children look to their parents for safety, comfort and for their guidance, because thats who they look up to and are dependant on for survival, if you can't provide those things then you really shouldn't be a parent.
These so-called critics of Turning Red just don't know how it feels for children to grow up with these feelings and natural changes, because they either shut them out of their life and pretend it never happened, and/or block out that part out of their memory for when they were kids growing up. It's hugely the fault of religious beliefs for making people think and behave this way. I'm glad Turning Red showed these topics, it's healthy understanding for growing up, it's not something you should hide away, and pretend it's not happening, because by not engaging in these topics your kids will develop high levels of anxiety and depression as they get older going through these changes.

I have an older cousin of mine that was born in 1993 and when I saw her on the middle of 2000s like the year of 2006, she usually reads stories about vampires in her collective pocketbooks. She is also addicted to boybands, and she always tells me about her childhood and teenage crushes. One time when I discovered her photo album, her high school life with her friends were memorable. They never left each other behind. She alongside my mom told my older sister who went puberty when she was 11 years old on how to deal with this situation by being more careful by herself. I say that this movie really refreshes me back to the 2000s, where all of my childhood were spent (I'm born in 2002) since I remembered one time my family used to play with VCDs and play some hit songs on the radio or in the MP3.

I just felt connected to mei in general. It's not that my life is like her's in some sort of way, it's just I feel and understand the character and I love the movie for that.
P. s. can we just say that when mei's dad is cooking and we see his face it's like anime with the glowing glasses, but then it turns realistic and it's actually just steam and not anything else.

This movie reminds me so much of myself at age thirteen and also of myself now as an adult and my best friend, especially since were really close and are looking forward to going to a concert together and even though Im grown up, I even have to deal with my parents anxiety too.

One of the funniest UNRELATABLE moments for me is the dodgeball scene. My thought the first time I saw that scene was Okay; TWO of you are more athletic than I ever was but NO ONE I knew could have had a conversation that in-depth while playing dodgeball. How the heck!

This is why Turning Red puts Cuties to shame. It was the debut-movie success story for its writer/director that earned the audience Cuties could never have, because Turning Red knew how to relate to a middle-school audience without being too inappropriate for them to watch.

When this first came out, my friend texted me and said, I regret to inform you that we are in Turning Red. She is absolutely right. I was in 10th grade during 2002 but this was such a snapshot of my middle and high school years, ESPECIALLY the anime sketchbooks.

That comment to people who were upset by the depiction of periods we hate to break it to you but that's what being a teenager is like was brilliant. Very well done, WatchMojo!

I'll point out one thing. Mei's relationship with her Mom is 100% similar to my relationship with my mother. Everything they show in the movie is similar to my situation

It is surprising to see a movie where a character gets a superpower and doesnt hide it AND everyone just accepts it. No secret identity nonsense except for the parents
