Christian and Dani in Midsommar. Thats how most bad relationships ACTUALLY go. Its rarely overt cheating or screaming or shouting. Or them obviously screaming YOU CANT SEE YOUR FRIENDS! But the toxicity is in the little things. In them intellectualizing your every emotion and making you feel shame for being human. In the doing really good things for someone in a less powerful/privileged position so that whenever you complain about the little things that are actually the big things- everyone around you judges you as selfish and ungrateful because hes such a good guy who goes above and beyond. In the gaslighting and feeling like your relationship issues are constantly treated with an air of impersonality which people often mistake for maturity.

Yeah. well. Sometimes things don't work out. But sometimes they do. I think you said realistic but really you meant tragic, but very well acted also very dramatic. Real is also being married for 27 years to someone you love now more than the day you met him. Like me. No big drama. Just best friends going through life together, learning from each other, accepting the differences, finding satisfaction in the similarities, helping each other through hard times, being the best part of each other's day. The flowers my husband sent me on our last anniversary had a card that said, You. You are my best days. I feel the same way about him. But I guess that wouldn't make a very exciting movie. But it's realistic.

I know that real life is real life but is there any realistic movie out there with an actual happy ending despite the hardships?
I get that there are some out there on this list that are happy endings but a lot of these films are heartbreaking or break up films and I dont like it.
I believe in love but it can make people not want to believe in love if you know what I mean. Lol

I know its not a movie, but Mira(Jessica Chastain) & Jonathan(Oscar Isaac) from Scenes from a Marriage(HBO) were the most realistic couple I have seen on screen. The tension, drama, the acting, the dynamic and chemistry between them was just incredible.

Good list, but as much as I love the Before trilogy, I think I'd give Blue Valentine the # 1 spot. The couple's relationship was so real, it was gut-wrenching to watch as it unraveled. The story stayed with me long after the end credits rolled.

NONE of these are realistic. None of them have the guy watching football in one room, while the gal watches Netflix/Hallmark films in the other, periodically shouting out What did you say! across the house.

I'm not a dumb romantic person
But if your main conclusion seems to be that realistic couples are the ones who break up in the end, your understanding of a relationship is probably lacking.

I believe in love and fantasy as much as I believe in fate, bc without love there is no fate and without fate there is nothing but heartbreak or sadness or fear of being alone forever

My diagnosis of Seb and Mia
Seb tends to take his problems out on other people and gets sulky and rude when things don't go his way.
Mia expects too much from people.

While watching Marriage Story, I kept feeling as though I was intruding on a couples' private, most intimate moments. This is a testament to how realistic it is!

Peter and Vandy I think is like Blue Valentine. Makes me feel less alone in reality as we've all had relationships and seen how they start and end.

I used to dislike this genre. But somehow it became my comfort genre throughout the pandemic. Now I'm a sort of expert. Seen 9 out of 10 on the list

this as a weird list. All the films were so recent and then you throw in The Way We Were'. I think there's decades of movies overlooked.

La la land is sooo shallow! Not at all an example of a real couple, maybe of two narcissists, but not a couple who love each other.

Like Crazy destroyed me. My first love and I were long distance in the 2nd year of our relationship before finally breaking up.

Sometime when you are on set, things can get so real that you probably think you are in a relationship in real life!
