These hit songs would've sounded much different if other artists hadn't rejected them. For this list, well be looking at the most popular songs you might be surprised to learn were offered to other singers before being sung by the ones we associate them with today. Our countdown includes Telephone, Let's Get Loud, SOS, and more! Do YOU know any songs rejected by other artists?

Okay, So I was watching this from my smart TV but had to log on my mac just to comment on how surprised I was that #1 was NOT Baby One More Time by Britney Spears originally written for and offered to the legendary and iconic group TLC, You can hear how it was meant for them - the way Britneys voice starts sultry and deep (T-Boz) until she switches into a more higher pitched bridge (Chilli. The song is perfect for Britney Spears, but my god I am just imagining how Left Eye would have killed it with a rap on that song, had TLC said yes. 'Rainy Dayz' by Mary J. Blige and 702's 'Where My Girls At? were also wrote for TLC but rejected.
Also as to your comment at the end on how it's hard to imagine Janet Jackson performing with a python on stage. . Britney Spears might have performed with a python in 2001 - but back in 1989, the queen diva icon legend Janet Jackson performed live on stage with a live panther for 'Black Cat'. Sooooo. Panther > Python (Love Britney though! One of my faves, but let's remember who was one of her biggest inspirations - an icon, a legend, the moment: Janet Damita Jo Jackson!

Just image if these songs were actually giving to the artist and they actually agreed to the songs no passing it on the songs to someone else. There would be different sounds to the songs. As long as they are happy and having fun with the songs they are singing. Someone else has a voice and someone person has a different style of singing that would better match the song. I don't know if the song would do well if the artist agreed to sing the song and didn't pass on the song to another artist. I still think it would be very cool to hear the different versions of the song. This video isn't talking about favorite hits of rap so I was gonna say something about that. But I can't. I love singing but I wouldn't sing as a job. I don't like to be around too much people and I wouldn't like the spotlight on me. But that's one of my dreams to be a singer.

I can't picture I'm a slave 4 U being sung by other artists. If it gave to another artist there will be no VMA 2001 with python. The most legendary performance of VMA ever! And besides, no one could pull up Britney's slave choreography. I've seen the choreographer doing dance moves and I can say Britney was way better and more fluid. Britney was just on another level of performing. So thank you Janet for rejecting the song.

I wish Sugababes had recorded Don't Cha. Would have really fit their aesthetic at the time.
So glad Kylie Minogue got to record Spinning Around despite being touted as a comeback single for Paula Abdul.
Can't picture Stevie Nicks singing Call Me. Stevie did reject These Dreams which became massive for Heart in the 1980s.

Michael Jackson's 1st Solo hit Ben was written for Donny Osmond. Donny was busy touring with brothers so the song was offered to Michael.
One Bad Apple by The Osmond's was written for the Jackson 5. They turned it down to do ABC and One Bad Apple became The Osmond's first number 1 hit.

Janet Jackson wouldn't have danced with a python around her neck? Are you kidding? Did you forget who you were talking about? She's a Jackson. Michael had two identical albino pythons. One was Muscles, the other Madonna. Janet was no stranger to a reptile.

I wasn't ever a fan of the snake dance. Using animals as prop was not OK. Especially with all the music and spinning and stuff? What for? I guess the only consolation is that Britney lip syncs so at least there wasn't that going on too.

Every time I watch a video that references Telephone being offered to Brittany, I always wonder if the conservatorship had anything to do with it. not emotionally connected to the song does nothing to change my theory

This are more massive that some on the list:
Baby One More Time (Rejected by TLC, Backstreet Boys and 5ive)
Umbrella (Rejected by Britney)
Since U Been Gone (rejectedby P! nk and Hilary Duff)

If Britney thinks that Slave 4 You is more suited for Janet, then why not have them collab together? From the way I look at it, no matter the owner of this song, they can both run the money of the song.

Dont cha performed by Paris Hilton would have been terrible. The only reason that song is not totally garbage is because the singing talent of the pussycat dolls. Talent that Paris does not have.
reply

All I can say about these people passing up the songs all of them saying it fine regardless who did it but the first one I'm glad the pussycat Dolls sang and not Paris Hilton
reply

Paris in a million years couldnt pull it off Dont cha ever. Clearly shows how talented artist can actually work on a song and make it better. Not to mention Paris cant sing.

Kylie Minoge would of killed Toxic. I think she would of done the same kind of justice. Kylie was big at the time also. Prolly would of done bigger numbers across the pond
reply

I think most of those would have been done very well by the ones they were first offered to. Just thank God Paris Hilton didnt get a chance to ruin that first song.

Actually, Christina co-wrote Miss independent but she feels it doesnt fit in her stripped album so she offered it to another artist and landed on Kelly.
reply

I'm actually pretty surprised #1 wasn't Chandelier. It was originally offered to Rihanna and IIRC, when Rihanna heard it after was mad she didn't take it.
reply

Stienberg and Kelly offered True Colors to Ann Murray, who passed on it. Cyndi Lauper took it (and substantially rearranged it, and the rest is history.
reply

In my mind, I can hear Christina singing miss independent even though Kelly was the one who recorded it. I love both ladies, they have incredible voices!
reply

You forgot to include the biggest hit ever (and miss by the other artist) when TLC said no to Baby one more time and then given to Britney Spears

reply

LOL at Paris. It was probably a slower version. I heard her sing, she couldn't come close to what the Pussycat dolls did.
reply

I cant believe you missed Dont You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds, originally and eventually recorded by Billy Idol.
reply

Telephone & Toxic could have never turned out better - especially not without these two videos in tow. Absolutely iconic!
reply

No mention for Bad Girls? I remember that was offered to a different singer, forgot the name but Donna Summer sang it
reply

Umbrella, and Havana both rejected by Britney Spears! Bleeding Love given away to Leona Lewis by Jesse McCartney!
reply

I dont think Paris Hilton would have made don't cha sound so hot but I would have heard Paris Hilton version
reply

Toxic wouldve been a hit no matter who recorded it! And now I need a Kylie and Britney collab on the song!
reply

Diamonds by Rhianna should be number #1. It was originally intended for Beyonce. Tisk Tisk MsMojo. LOL
reply

Beyonce scooped Rihanna for pretty hurts. Sia said she threw an obscene amount of money at her for it.
