Honestly I think this list is about 50-50. Sometimes, the show is very much making fun of the thing or the context that is unforgivable. Sometimes not. So for instance, yes, Joey gets dumber over time and the laughs are at his expense. Same is true of Monica's weight. Both have aged poorly or were questionable even at the time. But the one with Ross's cousin is pretty much the opposite - the joke IS that it's inappropriate. Honestly I think most gay people would say the same about #1 (My Dad is gay, and came out later in life. Rather than being something that aged badly, I'm mostly on the side of the show in the way it engages with the topic. I think most of us understand this: the scene in Vegas with Chandler's Dad isn't haha, Trans People, Gross.
It bothers me that this list alternates back and forth, and can't tell the difference. I think what this list is saying is that these moments would be considered off limits or taboo today - but that's not the point, right? The point is whether or not these plotlines are mean-spirited. When Ross wants to take the Barbie away, guess what? It is Ross and his insecurity that are being roasted.

One of the main (and MANY ) things that always made me not like Ross but especially RossxRachel was how much he looks down on her job, field, and the passion she has for fashion. As someone who already gets that not everyone is going to be stoked about how you choose to make a living, even if you're passionate about it, he should know firsthand how important it is to support someone and how hard it can be to make that dream a reality and for it to be accepted by others. But instead, he keeps acting like what she's doing is only a temporary thing that she'll grow out of, like a child or something just because it's not something he's into. He was always so dismissive with her about that and it really bugged me. He gets annoyed when people poke fun at him about his love for dinosaurs but clearly doesn't see how it is on the other foot when he turns around and does the same thing to others.

Ross was so toxic in season 4. He shouldve just accepted he made a mistake and gotten back together with Rachel which is what he wanted. But he thought, Hey what would make my life more fun? How about making my best friend and
ex-girlfriends life 100x harder!
Also, he shouldve just gotten the divorce to Rachel. Even though the annulment/courtroom scene was hilarious.
But the part from Phoebe about how you can have whatever you want on your gravestone, top notch!
And Ross making a list about who to date! Massive red flags

For #7, I can sort of see Ross' point of view. Carol's betrayal with Susan and the subsequent end to his marriage really did a number on his self-confidence (whether he's conscious of it or not. Once bitten, twice shy. I can see how he would be afraid to lose Rachel to anyone. (I'm not excusing his behavior, but I can relate to how he would feel with his increased sense of insecurity)
I believe the trauma from his marriage to Carol causing him to be insecure is brought up in a later episode.

In a lot of ways, if the main parts of the show were in today, it would mocked for being woke queer parents, difficult pasts, surrogacy, adoption, single parenthood, infertility, personal growth, etc. Im as woke as they come (which is actually just code for; decent human behaviour) and while I do cringe every now and then, it is not at all cancel worthy.
Which is exactly why its still popular in 2023.

Because of all this political correctness that is present today and because you can't make fun about anything anymore, I watch Friends even after 20 years and I I don't watch a single modern series that doesn't have a grain of humor in it. That's why Friends is the best series of all time, and that's why I'll be watching it for a long time. Today there are no good comedy series anymore.

I disagree with the fat shaming one, as someone who is fat trying to lose weight (3 stone lost in the last 6 months) it feels good to lose weight, hearing people say it's fine to be fat disgusts me, it's not healthy, it really is better to be getting thinner, sometimes people do need a kick up the backside to start losing weight. And I laughed and still laugh at the fat jokes.

On Ross' jealousy: at the risk to be the devil's advocate (and while not approving of overbearing jealousy, Ross was clearly traumatised by Carol's cheating on him, and that's mentioned in the show. Also, it was justified, as Mark WAS very much interested in Rachel and rushed to ask her out the moment Ross was out of the picture.

I don't think on Chandler reaction to his dad is necessarily Transphobia or homophobia. Is just that the events that took place lead to all his childhood trauma. From witnessing his dad with the pool boy to them divorcing during thanksgiving. If you noticed he kept the same energy with both his parents not just dad but also mom.

Are we forgetting Ross saying another woman's name AT THE ALTER OF HIS WEDDING!
To be fair, just about everything Ross does is disgusting.
Also, justice for Chandler with his father. That's not always an easy thing to deal with and the way everything happened caused so much childhood trauma for him. That's unfair.

I dont think you can compare humor from the 90s and early 2000s to current standards. These bits were hilarious at the time and soooo many shows back then made them. Its like comparing laws from 1815 to laws now. Things have changed so much over time so comparing or using current standards to judge them doesnt make sense

Honestly though Denise Richards is one of the most beautiful women alive so I can't really blame everyone for falling for her.
Side note I hate how Ross went from somewhat sympathetic at the start being vulnerable from having been cheated on but as the show went on they just turned him into a crazy guy.

I don't agree with 2. Monica WAS really fat earlier, like many of people. And yes, part of those people decides to loose weight becauce they want to be treat better, and YES, usually they ARE treat better ones thay look better. It's how its is. We, people, prefer people who looks good and self-cared

If everything would have been perfect then how it could be relatable with what we saw in our lives. It would have just been boring and lecture type if the characters doesn't have any flaw. In the end everyone realised thier mistakes and also suffered for what they did in a funny way.

Joey's dumbness is funny at parts and he can be smart when he wanta to be, and offer amazing advice. Makes him the best friend on the show.
But the French thing is something I can never really enjoy. No one is so dumb that they can't even repeat what the other person is saying

I'm not exactly thin and I don't find Monica's weight changes to be an issue. I don't like the Chandler line addressing fat sister but other than that, Monica always made the best. She was close with one of the most popular girls in high school, she went to parties, she went to prom.

Im transgender, and I dont believe there was any outright transphobia and its widely expected. I am grateful that its been acknowledged they misgendered her, but otherwise, I think its important to acknowledge when history didnt quite get things right. Thats how we learn.

As horrible as Ross's jealously of Mark was, he wasn't completely out of line. Mark did, after all, admit to having a crush on Rachel and that being his main motivation for giving Rachel the job. That in and of itself could be problematic on Mark's part.
