1] I hate how so many people try to take away some of these heroines' agency. Belle CHOSE to take her father's place in the castle. She wasn't blackmailed, or otherwise forced into it by any of the other characters. It was HER idea, HER promise. He just held her to it. Granted, he didn't have to be such a jerk about it, but the principle still stands.
2] What Ariel and Cinderella have in common is that independence/freedom from a situation they hated was their shared initial goal, not finding romance. The difference between them is how they handled it. If it hadn't been for that proclamation, Cinderella seemed like she would've been content with only the memory of the ball, and she would've continued on with her life as an abused servant. With Ariel, however, once she laid eyes on Eric, he became the catalyst for all her future plans. He was an easy center-excuse for doing things she'd actually wanted to do for years beforehand.
3] The idea of Forewarned is forearmed that troubled Aurora, her parents, and the fairies in Sleeping Beauty pops up again in The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea. Ariel and Eric could've easily kept Melody out of the ocean, if they'd only told her why she was supposed to avoid it. Instead, their mutual attitude of, I don't need a reason to tell you to do or not do something. Don't question it. Just obey me gave her greater incentive to rebel. They practically threw her into Morgana's arms. (10/1/2022)

I swear, the nuances of Beauty and the Beast are always missed and oversimplified. First off, who had the idea of Belle staying in the castle? Go back and rewatch it, because it's not the Beast. He tries to establish rules, but Belle, fearing her father will die if he stays, exchanges herself for Maurice. Belle doesn't follow any of Beast's rules like when he demands her join him for dinner, she doesn't, when he says she has to stay forever, she does leave after he loses his temper on her in the west wing. She brings him back after he saves her because she's like he put himself in danger to save me, the decent thing to do would be to bring him back and make sure he's OK. The other thing is she calls him out on his crap, and HE changes for her and makes the effort to restore his own humanity. And when he says she can leave after the ballroom scene, SHE LEAVES. She only goes back because she endangered him to save Maurice from the insane asylum and to return Chip to Mrs. Potts.

I'd like to defend the Snow White movie. First of all, I believe the reason the dwarves were obeying Snow White was because she's a princess and you have to obey royalty. Furthermore, they have a crush on her. Also despite being adults, they act like children. Then again, it doesn't feel right that she's telling others what to do in their own house. Perhaps she was worried that they'd get her share of food dirty. Perhaps she was worried their bad habits would spread towards the public. Second, about the age gap, keep in mind that this story is set in a different time period. I will say though I read that she was 7 in the Grimms brothers story but Walt changed her age to 14. Third, the reason the kiss that Snow White got was a goodbye kiss. He doesn't love corpses. He loves Snow White and he wanted to give her a loving send-off and had no idea she'd come back to life. I feel like the general public in the modern age is overlooking that movie.

As for the others:
Nemo: I watched it as an adult. Moving on.
Lion King: Saw this when I was 12 and got the idea beyond the surface.
B&TB: Yeah Stockholm Syndrome blah blah blah. Also, she did took her fathers place.
Snow White: Yeah its problematic!
TLM: Ariel always wanted to check the world above her. Eric was the motivator to do it. Its also very similar to Nemo with an overprotective father vs. inquisitive child (especially if you watch the made for DVD origin story)
Peter Pan: Yeah Pans the villain all along. Thank goodness Wendy and her bros decided to go home and grow up.
SB: Already had a separate comment about it.
Cinderella: And sadly, at the time, marriage was the escape.
Pocahontas: The movie came out when I was 13 and I knew it wasnt a love story in real life.
Hunchback: This movie is not meant for younger kids. Period!

This really ticks me off. Why can't people realize that these were stories of different times? And the original versions of these stories were 100 times darker? Like in the original tale of Sleeping Beauty. Aurora was raped by her own father while she was asleep and had a child. Cinderellas sisters cut of their own toes to get the glass slipper to fit. Ariel killed herself in her original story. People need to realize the REAL stories behind these movies. If you want to scar kids with these tales, read the the original ones. These versions give kids joy and entertainment. I work at a day care for little kids and we watch these all the time. I want them so see the Disney magic I grew up with and that stories do have happy endings

Again msmojo you appear to have forgotten something very important these fairy tales were written in a period when it was normal for 16 year old to get married or needed to get married because life expenses in those days were short so it was important to marry young & have kids & hopefully earn a place in high society. This is the point on Ariel as many fans on here have pointed out ariel wanted to go on land before she met the prince she just fell for him when she saw him. She is like most young woman of that time if they saw a handsome man they did fall in love very quickly, look up history years ago people got married without every meeting one another or had just met once through a gathering or arranged by family members

It's such a pity. I always liked the Pocahontas-movie because of its music, art, romance and message about peace and overcoming prejudices. But really, the creators shouldn't have used the names Pocahontas, John Smith, Powhatan, Kokoum and Ratcliffe. Maybe not even the names Jameston and Virginia. They should have used a complete fictional setting and claiming that the story of Pocahontas was, of course, their source of inspiration, but that the movie wasn't really about her. Then it would have been a lot more acceptable. This movie has almost nothing in common with Pocahontas' tragic and cruel lifestory. The thought that she would possibly hate this movie when she had known about it, saddens me.

Defending Sleeping Beauty for a moment. Yes, Phillip and Aurora were arranged to wed as children, but would find each other again when they were older (even though Aurora was brought up as Briar Rose. Neither was aware at first that they were one and the same until the fairies told Phillip while he was locked up. So by the time he got to kiss her, he is more that aware who she is (Briar is his intended bride Aurora) and that Aurora/Briar already liked the stranger who happens to be her intended groom (Phillip. So it may come across as non consensual, Phillip and the fairies knows that kissing Aurora will revive her.
Plus, Phillip just slayed a dragon-form Maleficent moments before. Lol

i love how people keep completely missing the point of Beauty and the Beast. Two people that society rejected for different reasons find solice in each other. this was at the height of the aids epidemic and was an alogory for gay men being literally ostricized from society as unclean. To say nothing of the reagan administration literally LAUGHING at the crisis and police continuing to either ignore or engage in the violent hate endured by the LGBT community. This was about happy endings for those that society deems as unworthy.

For a start msmojo snow-white cooks, cleans in all the snow white stories apart from dreamworks Shrek, in the period white was written that is what girls were taught to do & if you remember at the beginning of story she became a cleaner (a maid for a more kinder way to put it) by the queen so she got use too being one. Also I think you should read ALL the original snow white version stories, it was Disney's idea on kissing her not in the books, trust me when I say 'I'm pleased to have the prince kiss her awake. '

I don't care what anyone says, I'll always love Beauty and the Beast. Also, Belle chooses to come back twice and it's clear she could have easily escaped at any time, but stayed because she saw the Beast changing (he became a man on the inside before becoming one on the outside. I also still love Pocahontas; it probably should have been a completely fictional story with fictional characters because the real story is way too dark for kids, but it has great themes and is a beautiful story in its own right.

With Finding Nemo, even as a kid I always saw things from both Nemo AND Marlins prospects. I related to Nemo cuz as a kid I loved to swim and explore. But at the same time I couldnt blame Marlin for how he acted because my parents had similar fears for me when I was younger. And the fact that this is one of those movies that only improves with age in every way shape and form(minus maybe its animation as Im sure itll look ugly in say 50 years by their standards)only makes me love this movie even more.

Culture nowadays is tooo sensitive to and offended by everything. its so sad.
Watching these movies didnt hurt us millenials for Instance. so maybe. we could all just see them for what they are. FAIRY TALES(for the most part. in the disney way anyway. At least for childhood, bc they really DONT SEE what US GROWN UPS SEE. One can still dive into the depth of things when they are older.
Life is too tough sometimes as it is. We shouldn't take the fun out of those childhood classics too much idk

As an adult, I realize Snow White didn't do much in the film regarding bravery or heroism. The dwarves offered her protection from the Queen in exchange for house work. Snow White having to look after the cottage while the dwarves go out and do the BIG work in the mines matches the female inferiority sadly common for the time the film was released in. Plus, one prince kiss later and all's well. This negatively implies that women can't function without men. The movie taught nothing beneficial.

Well, lets just remember that ALL these fairy tales are derived from much more extreme darkness, like the step sisters in Cinderella actually cutting of their toes for a better chance of fitting into the glass slippers. Keeping that in mind, these movies stick to a brighter, and simple moral lesson. Even Elsa was going to actually be the villain of the movie. If you look into any of these movies original Grimms fairy tales, they take a much more adult mind to get through.

Can we talk about the little mermaid 2 yet? Or is it to soon?
Perfectly represents why they decided to make arial of African American descent for the little mermaid in the upcoming film. In the sequel as she warns her daughter not to return to the streets that her mother grew up on. She warned her daughter about how dangerous it is and how she need not know life of that nature. Ariel was from the streets yall

And I think you have far too shallow take on all the fairy tails. That is all that is, tails for kids. mermaid, dwarf, beast and other things don't exist. Also THIS is the narratives that make kids so extra sensitive now. They are not even supposed to look for things you are listening here. If you have issues or traumas yourself, as an adult with all those points on your list-seek therapy. Don't project them on children please

True Ariel was reckless to make her decision about Eric so hastily, but Triton's reaction was unjust. Rather then furiously bar her from the idea cold turkey, Triton should've sat down with his daughter and calmly explain the logistics. Then let her make her own choice with the addition of her Dad's insight. When you push someone, they naturally push back. Triton's OWN recklessness made him learn that the hard way.

Me and my friendgroup watched beauty and the beast a week ago and our main take was how childish the beast is. We grew up not liking his character because that was trendy when we were young (the buzzfeed articles etc) but now that we are grown-ups we just saw him as a depressed guy with anger issues and toxic behaviur. Ended up rooting for him to become a better person

The message I got from The Little Mermaid as an adult is you can make a deal with the Devil and thats ok because youll get what you want in the end. I saw the message of The Lion King as an adult is in order to get what you want, somebody else has to pay. What I got out of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame as an adult is nice guys finish last. I could go on.

I love everything about these movies! My daughter and son, now 32 and 30, watched these every day. I'm 59 and I just watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame the other night as I was baking! Every now and then I need to hear the music which is brilliant. Going to watch Brave, next. Then Frozen! BTW all this BS about non-consensual kisses is just, IMO BS.

Does ANYONE - child or adult - not get how Pleasure Island is a hellish place meant to lure kids in with the promise of being able to do whatever they want and then change them into donkeys and sell them? Seriously, I was like seven or eight when I first saw the movie and I got how Pleasure Island is NOT a happy carefree place.

Ariel doesn't even know what a fork is! Yeah, that's because she lives in a culture where forks don't exist, not because she's immature. That's why she's so fascinated with human culture - they make so much interesting stuff that she doesn't know anything about. Did you actually watch the movie?

The Beast didn't imprison Belle. He imprisoned her father for trespassing. She offered (under her own free will) to take his place. She doesn't ask anything else first, just jumps directly to I'll be your prisoner then he realizes all the awful things he's done and works to make himself better

I found Ariel signing the contract at Ursula's Lair as a conceptual way to deal with being in the clutches of a bad stranger who's a vicious criminal when you're not comfortable signing a legal document in his/her presence. NOBODY does this to my favorite character.

There were adults when all these films came out originally. So how is that now we are adults does it make it a racist movie. Its the fact the era of participation trophies are now adults that some much has now become racial or socially inappropriate.

Aurora didnt asked to be cursed, and she was saved by someone she knew. Its not like she was kissed by someone she didnt know. The Once Upon a dream sequence saved her life. If she had not met Phillip in that way, she wouldnt have waken up.
