Doug never wouldve left Carol the way he did. His character deserves so much better the storyline afterwards was annoying and took way too long.
That being said, the storyline of Dorothy took too long. Her marriage happened in episode 25 after a season not mentioning Blanches brother or uncle at all. And then they get hitched in one day? Thats so unlike Dorothy who always seemed kinda proud to be independent

Cory, Topanga, Shawn & Eric saying goodbye to Mr Feeney in Boy Meets World's series finale
the rest of Coulson's team saying farewell to the disavowed Hunter & Bobbi in Agents of SHIELD
literally every major character's goodbyes on NCIS
Wes & Jen having to say goodbye as she returns to the future in the Power Rangers Time Force finale
Ally & Larry's final goodbye in Ally McBeal

that's not sad
transformers aligned continuity series endings
my little pony friendship is magic franchise
sonic x ending
the owl house (will they live will they all get married who knows) and
DuckTales 2017
miraculous ladybug (will Adrien and Marinette be happy at last? Who knows)
these are much sadder

You seem to have forgotten the final episode of the 1985-1989 detective series Moonlighting titled Lunar Eclipse when Maddie and David tell each other goodbye at the end of the show, but the action leading up to the end of the series it has gone totally meta. I loved that show and the final episode.

Sean's final appearance in Degrassi: The Next Generation when he's about to ship out for his military duty is played down so much next to the often dramatic flare of the rest of the show, it shakes you. This is especially true when you have been in this situation with a loved one that serves/d.

The Tenth Doctor on Doctor Who, made me cry like a baby when he was telling Rose goodbye and when he left for good and said I don't want to go! Oh boy, was sooo sad! I was crying again. Even though I learned to love the next Doctor. David will always be my Doctor. I love him still and miss him.

I loved when Fran, Max, and their family leave for California in the final episode of The Nanny. She has to say goodbye to her mom but also the house in general where they found a happy future after so much sadness! That last shot of her makeup sales case from the pilot episode? I loved it!

For me, any goodbye scene from Supernatural could easily be an honorable mention on this list since that show has so many sad goodbyes, like Sam having to say goodbye to Dean when he dies in the final episode of the show. That one always still gets me every time I watch that episode.

Saddest TV goodbye list that doesn't include Buffy and Angel from Angel, Season 1 episode 8 I Will Remember You is simply incomplete. That and the goodbye between Queer As Folk's Brian Kinney and Justin Taylor, Season 5 episode 13 We Will Survive is just crushing.

MY FAVORITES:
Kendall Knight & Jo Taylor (Big Time Rush)
Homer & Mona Simpson (The Simpsons)
Rachel Green & The Friends (Friends)
Devon Carter & Raven Baxter (That's So Raven)
Carly Shay & Her Loved Ones (iCarly)

When the Dr and Rose have their moment i cried soooooo hard. Thinking, foolishly I know, that would be it and then his final goodbye. Yeah, started to dislike certain friends who continue to get me into shows where I bawl.

Wynonna and her posse burying the ashes of Marshal Xavier Dolls on Wynonna Earp. Doubly emotional because he literally sacrificed himself to save them (but you won't see WE on any Mojo/Ms Mojo lists because. well, you just won't )

The series finale of Dinosaurs as we know all the characters are doomed to a slow demise. In words of the show's news anchor: In the long-term forecast: snow, darkness, extreme cold. This is Howard Handupme. Goodnight. Goodbye
reply

The most heartbreaking recent goodbye scene has to be Alexis and Ted from Schitt's Creek. As far as I am concerned, Alexis became the most layered character on the show after that scene.
Which is saying a lot.

An even more tear-jerking goodbye on Scrubs was when Laverne Roberts went into a coma and died. Everyone taking turns to say their private goodbyes to her, but ESPECIALLY Carla's devastating goodbye speech.

Thank you! No qualms about your number one as I was hoping it would show up. I saw the original broadcast in the TV room at college and have never been able to rewatch it. #MASH #GoodLuckAndGodBless
reply

Honorable mention: Michelle Tanner and Uncle Jesse - Full House. Season 4, Episode 20. Fuller House.
Michelle crying while watching Uncle Jesse leave the house and he was crying as well.

MASH definitely deserves its number 1 on this list. I cried SO much during that last episode. I saw it when it first aired and it hurt in ways I didnt even know a tv show could at the time.

The goodbye to Butterfree hit me pretty deep when I first saw it.
Pokemon also had some other sad goodbyes. Goodra, Togetic (evolved Togepi, Chimeco, even Arbok and Weezing.

reply

Mickey and Ians goodbye at the Mexican border or Ian saying goodbye to his family (especially Lip) before he goes to prison were way more sadder than Fionas one for Shameless
reply

How is Hook and Emma's goodbye in the Underworld on Once Upon a Time not on this list! Also the Byers and Eleven leaving Hawkins. Both those scenes had me bawling

I can think of at least two sad goodbyes:
1. Mike And Gloria saying Goodbye to Archie and Edith
2. Rose, Blanche and Sophia saying goodbye to Dorothy
