So you guys HAD to leave out Treasure Planet once again, didn't you? Do you not consider it to be a huge UPGRADE to Treasure Island? Especially considering the fact that Disney had already adapted the book twice before with the live-action one in 1950 and the Muppet musical version in 1996? Unlike the majority of the Treasure Island adaptations, TP put more focus on the father and son-like relationship between Jim Hawkins and John Silver, making it the heart and soul of the story. Jim was made older and much more likable, sympathetic, relatable, and developed. And instead of killing Jim's dad off, Jim's dad in TP just abandoned his family and never came back ever since, which helped strengthen the bond between Jim and Silver even more. Not to mention that it's a sci-fi re-imagining of the book, which gave it a perfect opportunity to have it's own cool worldbuilding and lore, which is pretty similar to Star Wars, when you think about it. Speaking of which, one of the critics from Time Magazine called it Treasure Island meets Star Wars, which that quote was used in the movie's advertising leading up to it's release. Therefore, TP was a to both Treasure Island and it's author, Robert Louis Stevenson. But no. You just HAD to include dumb overrated Frozen instead just so you could pander and conform to popular opinion as usual. That further proves you guys really don't about Treasure Planet as much as you claim you do. It's like you constantly pretend that you genuinely care about the film. I'm sick of TP's excessive exclusion from lists like this. I really am.

Thank you for this list! This list reminded me of just what Disney can do when they are on their game, so to speak, and just why 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Frozen' are two of the greatest movies of all time! 'Frozen' in particular was made to heal the modern world!
Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' is also much more what the modern world needs to heal than the original source material- to teach us to not be afraid of what is different but instead to love it, and to teach us that happy endings do indeed exist- Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' heals and inspires the modern world as well!
While 'Frozen' shows us just what true love is, and that boy-girl romance is not the only kind of true love, that what I share with my Mom is true love as well, just like Anna and Elsa's love as sisters. to teach us to 'Let it go', let go of our fears and begin to heal with Elsa, to teach us to pull together and support each other, and that we can count on each other more than we think, just Like Elsa did not know how far her sister would go to save her and just how Anna understood what she was going through. a movie to heal the wounds of the modern world!
Two movies that improved upon very good, classic source material, just like Steven Spielberg's original Jurassic Park, only these were more obviously movies to heal the modern world!
(Jurassic Park could heal the modern world too, but only if we let ourselves get carried away with its joy in spite of the danger)

Seeing Hercules, Notre Dame and Little Mermaid in the list: Then people call ME crazy when I say at least the Pinocchio remake DOES make him a brave, honest and unselfish boy and it's closer to the book's message than in the original movie.
Now, they're not BAD versions, but you mean to tell me you prefer the Little Mermaid that [QUOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER] has a Die Hard climax to the one were she tests her faith, her love and decides to put the love and life of the love of his life over hers? Or that you prefer Hercules being a guillable Superman fighting the God of the Underworld that, of course he's the bad guy: he rules Hell like Satan. That must mean he's evil like him! and not the QUINTESSENTIAL HERO FIGURE his myth created? Or. nah, ok, Notre Dame had ok changes for an adaptation aimed for a younger audience, but would you choose this has always been evil Frollo acting like a fake-father to Quasimodo to the Frollo-Quasimodo relationship the book gives us, quoting Quasimodo loved and trusted Frollo so much that if he'd ever asked him to jump off the tallest peak of Notre Dame, he would have done it IMMEDIATELY that slowly gets ruined by a woman they both have feelings for? YOU CALL THOSE IMPROVEMENTS FROM THE SOURCE MATERIAL?

Glad someone appreciates Sleeping Beauty but I wish they had improved on it a bit more and created their own story a bit more.
Also Disney was adapting from Perrault's Sleeping Beauty (and perhaps a little bit from Grimm, NOT from Sun, Moon and Talia directly. (That being the original original source material referred to in this video. The one that Disney probably did not even know about. I did know because one of my childhood fairy tale books mentioned that story and that it was where Sleeping Beauty came from, but obviously not everyone knows)
Perrault already made the tale much nicer/gentler/etc. before Disney came along. In the end of Perrault's version, there are children but they were conceived after the wedding. The evil woman is also the prince's mother instead of his (first) wife.
Disney's primary sources were the ballet (and especially quite a lot of the ballet music, the Perrault tale without the Perrault ending, and possibly also the Grimm tale (which is almost the exact same story as the Perrault tale without the Perrault ending.
I'm not sure if Ms. Mojo is saying here that she thinks that the movie was so good or that the original tale was so bad, or both, but either way I only partially agree.

Cinderella's slippers were not made of glass in Charles Perrault story. They were made of squirrel fur. But the name of this squirrel fur has the same pronunciation as glass in french: glass is verre and this fur is vair. So it seems it was lost in translation.
Improvements is a point of view. I think it is more adaptations of the source materials to please the USA public and bring more profit. The issue is that in our time children watch USA adaptations of stories from their own countries/cultures before, if ever, reading the source materials. By the time I watched Disney movies made from European tales and legends, I have already read the source materials several times. So I know the difference between the source materials and the adaptations. Most children don't anymore. They only know the USA adapted versions of our European tales, legends and myths and believe them to be the source materials. I am not knowledgeable enough about other cultures around the world but it would surprise me if the same thing didn't happen.

0: 30 Your Question: Would rather see Disney adapt more previously existing stories into film or write original ones? Let us know in the comments below.
My Answer: Swan Lake, if Disney adapted this story in the same style as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, & The Princess and the Frog it could be the greatest adaptation they ever made. Often it is the prince who is transformed by a curse (or both in Princess and the Frog) so it would be an interesting role reversal from the princess's perspective to be the one who must find a way to get the prince to love her as a swan and brake the spell. So far there has already been one theatrical animated film adaptation (The Swan Princess) of the story, but with the storytelling and grand scale that Disney has to offer it has the potential of becoming a masterpiece.
P. S. It would also be interesting to see how (similar to Sleeping Beauty 1959) they adapt the original Tchaikovsky music into a modern soundtrack.

i'd be down with seeing original films mixed in with fairy tales/tales from across the world(preferably in 2d as i really miss it for their theatrical films.
love a lot like hercules(especially love the muses & would love to see more of them. :3, princess and the frog, hunchback, aladdin and especially tangled with how they keep the impact the story had while changing enough to work a better ending for some(i like the stories but for some they did go over the top dark at points that a change makes sense.
do like the originals stories even if they're different and for some think the originals are better like frozen(like elsa and anna being sisters but wished it had been elsa as the antagonist as i think a misunderstanding causing elsa to become a villain with anna journeying to convince her frozen heart would've been better than a twist villain) and animated 101 dalmations.

While I'm not the biggest fan of Sleeping Beauty and haven't seen Cruella, those are interesting points, and I absolutely agree on the one for Sleeping Beauty. The rest, I certainly agree on, ranging from Frozen, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, The Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood, Cinderella, The Princess and the Frog, and The Little Mermaid. Well, that's a load, but I certainly agree on Frozen, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Little Mermaid, complete with Sleeping Beauty.
Edit: Also, what comes with Disney's version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the potential for Esmeralda to be a role model.
Edit 2: I love Disney doing a mix of adaptations and original stories.

For me it's going to be Aladdin with Robin Williams' Genie. Nothing can top that in my opinion. It's the shear talent and level of craziness he brings to that character is just unprecedented in my opinion. I always feel Robin Williams as an element because of the incredible talent he had for just bring laughter and joy which is very rare. I always felt he was the modern day Bob Hope. Not part of the source material but still Aladdin is one of those rare jems. Tony Jay who voiced Frollo just pretty much a douchebag lol. The way he made the character hateable is just amazing in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Why does everyone keep saying Little Mermaid dissolves into sea foam She turns into an air sprite (Sylph) the name Ariel litterally means Air Spirit.
The Snow Queen is never stated as a villain. When Kay is stung in the heart and eye, he doesn't want to be with humans. The Snow queen gives him a safe home until he can unlock the magic to let him go home and be happy (love)
Also Sleeping beauty is BASED ON Solei Lunae etc Talia but they are not the actual same story. Disney's SB is closest to the Brothers Grimm, which combines it with Little Briar Rose

Better? Or different? To me it's mostly just flanderized. Some of it is a lot better, definitely not all. And did you not know that Hans Christian Anderson himself rewrote the ending of The Little Mermaid? Look up the Daughters of Air. And I think Disney made Sleeping Beauty much much worse, I don't see how more child friendly equals better. Hell, the disney movie only gives the main character 17 minutes. Not trying to fight with anyone, I just get annoyed when reminded of all this. Stories like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty were not written for children.

Improved is a strong word. That would imply that the source material was originally bad, which they weren't. In reality, Disney simplified fairytales and made them more kid friendly, which was indeed the best route to take.
Personally, I prefer the Snow Queen way more than Frozen; a young girl going on a journey lasting many years in order to find her best friend, that to me is way more interesting and engaging. Or maybe I'm just biased because I'm Danish and grew up with the original - we even had to do a school play about it in 1st grade.

As far as One Hundred and One Dalmatians, the original book was absolutely the best quality. (Read it. It's good)
In the later movies they made of 101 Dalmatians, in my opinion Disney did possibly somewhat improve upon Disney. They did not (for the most part) exactly improve upon the original book, because they hardly could have, because it's just that good.
Just saying.
The One Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith.
It's very well worth reading. ___

The Fox And The Hound has inspired me to write my own Titanic Story I am writing about these two ten year old cousins who sailed on the Titanic and Survived the nightmare of the shipwreck with their own courage and witts and their broken friendship but with great cost obviously meaning their families from their parents and older siblings did not survive and the sinking of the Titanic brings the two cousins relationship more closer.

The princess and the frog changed way too much from its source material. Making it more modern and giving it black leads was fine, but having it just be a completely different premise kinda bothered me.
I also like to make the argument of Beauty and the Beast, since I found the additional supporting characters and exclusion of the whole marry me part of the romance made it much easier for me to follow

I'm a little surprised Beauty and the Beast isn't here. But as for The Little Mermaid, the story I've heard is that, at the film's European premiere in Copenhagen, Michael Eisner apologized to the Queen of Denmark for changing the ending. The Queen said something along the lines of that it was perfectly all right, as Andersen never knew how to end a story anyway!

The only ones I disagree with are The Hunchback of Notre Dame because the 1939 film is the best screen adaptation, Robin Hood because the best screen adaptations are the 1938 and 1991 films and the TV shows The Adventures of Robin Hood and Robin of Sherwood and Hercules and Tarzan because they're both better in live-action than animation.

I still wish Gigantic wasnt cancelled. I think that would have been a big stand out, along with Inma the young 60 foot tall girl(no pun intended. I heard that was gonna be considered the definitive version of Jack and the Beanstalk. And the same people who worked on Tangled(one of my favorite Disney movies) were gonna work on Gigantic.

Frozen did not even remotely improve upon the Snow Queen. The Snow Queen is about a brave and determined young girl who travels across Scandinavia in search of her friend and redeems the Snow Queen in the process. Frozen's whole resolution is based on a cop out and has a lame plot twist villain.

What about Beauty and the Beast?
With a sympathetic prince with a strong arc, a smart and independent female lead, a genuine love story, and a legendary soundtrack by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. It wasn't nominated for Best Picture for nothing.

Sorry EB Bakers books are definitely better than the movie. To be fair the only thing they have in common is her turning into a frog. You cant really say the movie was based on the books since the stories are completely different.

I wish Disney would go back to adapting classic stories. There's so many great tales they still haven't animated. Also, I miss the OLD Disney formula with its romantic couples, clear villains, and lack of irony/meta humor.

I don't feel like humanizing a woman who wanted to skin puppies alive was a good idea. however, i do like how they expanded on the mermaid feeling like an outsider in her own home and finding a place where she belongs
