The 90s movie is nostalgic to me but the Netflix one is so well produced, true to the book, and it even adds a few things that make it so much better.
You see, the 90s movie was a comedy and the characters were turned American. I don't like that. I don't like how there were only two British characters in the 90s movie.
In the Netflix one, the other kids become good characters with names and personalities. It makes us connect with Miss Honey and get to know her more. And the I'm here song plus the event that happened just before it was so goddamn touching and relatable I just can't.
Y'know what I'll just make a list
90s:
It's a comedy, so it's hard to take it seriously.
The characters are American.
We barely know any other kids' name
Miss Honey is forced as a side character
Ms. Phelps is true to the book, but really, the musical made her so much better.
Ms. Phelps barely even cares about Matilda.
It unrealistically portrays the parents and watching TV.
Magnus is just a picture and all we know about him is that he was Miss Honey's dad and didn't have an amazing song.
Netflix:
The other kids become well known characters, even Eric. Eric was an unimportant character, but I ended up loving him.
The parents are realistically portrayed and their love for TV isn't expressed in a boomer way.
Miss Honey tells us so much more about herself than she did in the 90s.
Matilda and Ms. Phelps are actually good friends and she gets more screen time.
Matilda does what most readers do, which is make up their own stories.
Another Roald Dahl musical in Tim Burton style (idk if Tim Burton directed it or not)
Miss Trunchbull is so much more gross and scary than in the 90s.
Racial diversity.
Magnus is an actual character that we get to know and end up loving.
Con: Matilda doesn't look 6 1/2

whilst the new film gets a lot right there are some things where it fell short. The way miracle is choregraphed and sung in the stage show runs a direct parallel to the opening of the book, talking about how the narrator finds children revolting however in the film verstion this is changed to portray kids as being literal miracles, it doesn't leave the intended impact. songs in musicals like matilda are carefully crafted to work with the narrative and the characters. My other problem with it is how miss trunchbul is delt with at the end, it should have been the children running her out of the school, like in the original movie and the stage show, it would of had a much better pay off. I loved a lot of the other creative desicions they made like the location and the large ensemble dances just to mention a few.

The cast of the new adaptation are competing with the cast of the Devito movie? No. No, no, no, no. This film has been done a serious disservice by people insisting that 1) this is a remake (which it is not) and 2) people have to choose sides for some reason (which we do not.
The creatives behind the musical didnt even watch the Devito movie. The musical is based on the book, with some added story elements added by playwright Dennis Kelly, and of course songs by the inimitable Tim Minchin.
The two movies both have the same book as their original source material, both made pretty significant changes, and it is entirely possible to enjoy both of them. Honestly, everyone needs to stop with this either/or mentality. I promise Mara Wilson wont be sad if 90s kids enjoy the musical

I think with the musical version it really tapped into like the understanding of the child especially because in the 961 we only get a glimpse of like how it really is but in this musical version of the British version you get more of a feel of the background characters.
Especially because of the emotional feeling at the time and I think its really good how these kids got a coach I especially the character Matilda and his Honey
Because I felt like when I when I was watching her her character the person I was playing it she really tough into emotional of understanding words like to still figure out what you want in life and the struggles is

Danny DeVitos version is a cinematic classic and captured so much magic. It wasn't topped and im English so you would maybe presume im more inclined to be patriotic about my decision. Pam Ferris' Trunchbull is an iconic performance of a truly intimidating figure and captured the sinister presence perfectly. There are good things about the musical. In particular, Ms Honeys song which is truly heartbreaking. But the 90s movie will ultimately be the go to version in years to come. And rightly so.

Personally I really liked it, however I thought that Matilda and Ms Honey were portrayed as selfish and full of themselves which defeats the whole idea that Matilda is supposed to be very unaware of her intelligence and Ms honey is supposed to be more focused on Matilda and the other students than her own problems. So I didnt really like that cause I thought it made them kinda unlikeable. But I REALLY liked how they incorporated the songs into the movie and set the tone as sort of just, fun!

Love the new movie of the musical. Just wish they didnt take loud out of it. That was such a good song
Also we have to understand that the 2 Matilda movies arent related and you cant compare them. The first movie is based off the book. The musical movie that just came out is based off of the stage musical that is based off the book. And even then some parts have been taken out like the song loud that Mrs wormwood sings in the stage musical

I couldn't believe how amazing the Revolting Children number was at the end of the movie, the music was phenomenal, every single kid in that cast was bursting with energy, and especially for a cast of mostly children, the choreography was fantastically crisp and on point! I know of professional _adult_ performers that can't dance as well as that! Definitely going to be rewatching this movie!

it was freakin' great. but I coulda done without the fat suits. they continue to look unnanteral. both versions were amazing but the idea that Mr. Wormwood was escaping the mafia was way more scary than the feds. they are terrible people but even they don't deserve the fate the mafia would bring down.

As someone who watch the Danish version of the broadway musical 4 times back in february 2022 (one for each rotation of child actors, I absolutely loved the transition to film, and how they even dubbed the movie so I could hear all the same lovely songs in my own language once more.

The 1996 film will always be my favourite movie of all time but this movie was also amazing. I especially loved how Hortensia was such a badass; she reminded me of Rizzo in Grease. The fact that Isaac the newt was Lavender's pet was an adorable touch.

I'm glad people enjoyed this movie better than I did, but when i watched the movie, it felt way too over the top for me to get invested.
Then again, this is coming from somebody who actually likes the Food Fight Movie, so who am I to judge?

This is probably the best movie musical I have ever seen. I loved every aspect of it, and it will probably be one of the movies I watch a million times. Matilda is very wise and I think she is a great role model for people of all ages.

Might be recency bias, but I like this more than the 1996 film. I think bits and pieces of Dahl may have been lost in the translation to American. Both movies are great though, and I think the 96 Trunchbull was way scarier.

I just got done watching the movie. And I have to agree it is such a joyful delightfully dark tuneful and timely work. Its on par with the 1996 movie. As a Netflix movie, its a rebound from 13: the Musical

I think this is WAY better than the 1996 movie, which wasnt even set in England and changed major parts of the storyline. While not quite as good as the stage musical, I was happy with this adaptation.

Done right. unless you've seen the british stage play, the movie felt really odd after watching the stage play, like it has all the pieces but something's wrong and i just can't put my finger on it.

For those who have seen the different adaptations you need to view it as a fresh version. Although I do like the nods to other versions, like the ballroom dancing magazine on the Wormwood's end table.

OMG, this movie was absolutely AMAZING and is a must-watch. 5 out of 5 is too low to give this movie musical. All future Hollywood movie musicals must follow Roald Dahl's Matilda lead.

The exploitation of children in Hollywood is sick. They openly act like balenciaga was a huge deal then secretly support and push it through the media. The pedos are running everything.

The 2022 version of Roald Dahls Matilda: The Musical, RULES.
Hands-down, unequivocally.
I felt the 90s version of Miss Trunchbull was like a cartoon character in comparison.

In my eyes, nothing can hold up to the original Matilda, but this movie made me question it. The songs, dance and the talent these children have? Incredible. Truly remarkable.

This was absolutely awesome! It yanked me right in and didn't let go, still hasn't, probably never will. Miss Honey's song made me cry, and the finale song I was so happy.

I feel like this is referencing jukebox musicals. Cuz most musicals with original songs do help push the plot along or helps keep things from getting too serious.

Whilst I still prefer the 90s version, I cant deny that Matilda the Musical was very, very good. Kind of wish theyd have included Michael in the new version.

This is how you do a diverse movie with out it being woke or preachy performance and story telling comes first not the ethnicity of the cast! Loved it
