These moments needed a triple threat performer. For this list, well be looking at the most jaw-dropping times when we realized performers could sing, act, and dance. Our countdown includes Hairspray, Dreamgirls, Chicago, and more! Which celeb do YOU think is a triple threat?

Problem here is, you never can be sure WHEN an actor on screen is actually doing the singing, and when on the off-chance the actor's voice is REALLY on the soundtrack, these days vocals can be so manipulated and fixed in post production so as to be barely recognized from the original performance.
As for Mr. Gosling, while he was able learn a few dance steps and was able to look fairly comfortable in the dance sequences (that he admitted in more than one interview) that he practiced for months to be able to perform those fairly simply dance moves. Fred Astarie he aint. He also bragged about learning to play the piano for those scenes. Look carefully at the night club sequences IN LA LA LAND and you see quite a bit of camera trickery going on, artfully making sure his hands playing the keys linger only for brief moments and then cut ways. And so yes, he may be playing the piano keys, but are they actually the RIGHT keys or his he just mining it? If you can't to see how convincing miming piano playing can be, check out Tyrone Power looking like an Arthur Rubenstein in THE EDDY DUCHIN STORY

I have a comment and a reply elsewhere on this page, and this repeats much of the reply, but I wanted to put this in as it's own comment. There are many comments on this page that seem to miss the meaning of triple threat. It does not mean Gave a good performance in a musical. It means a person shows Great talent as a singer AND a dancer AND an actor. It has to be _all three_.
I agree, for example, that John C. Reilly's performance in Chicago was memorable: he captured the character very well (so check next to actor) and sang the character song Mr. Cellophane effectively (so check next to singer. He has also sung very well in other films (see Walk Hard, especially, but he barely danced a step in the movie (more like planned movement, and I've never seen him dance at all in any other movie -- so he cannot be called a Triple Threat. Nor can many others left off this list -- or even some (see my other comment) who ARE on this list. Let's be sure we give the label to people who are authentically talented in all three areas.

Objection to Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. That dance number was mediocre at best. I like Emma's vocals better than Ryan's. Amy Adams absolutely should've been on the list, since she's not only a great actress, she has a beautiful, trained singing voice and has trained in ballet. Zendaya's moves didn't surprise me since the first time she came to my notice was on Dancing with the Stars. She didn't win the season - she was runner-up - but she was incredibly impressive in all the styles of dance she had to learn for the show.

Goslingsinging? Seriously he is miserably flat even when assisted digitally, has very poor intonation and interval relationship (he is constantly out of tune he cant sustain pitch or hit/attack notes correctly as he makes transitions between them key abilities for any singer, has a tone quality that mimics a deflated balloon, and barely projects. Come on mojo you can do better than this!

Always remember that Catherine Zeta-Jones, a fellow Welshman, was pregnant for much of the filming of Chicago She is amazingI will always remember her tango with Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zoroastrian. Our youngest always forced her dad to tango with her when we watched the movie. She was about 3 yo, so had to stand on the bed for her papacito to lift her and tango.

Many mentioned in the video, and many mentioned in the comments section are not true triple threats. One has to EXCEL at all three to be considering one. One can't just be excellent in two, and okay in one, etc. Very, very few TRUE triple threats, in my opinion. Old Hollywood truly was the Golden Era in that respect, but there still are a handful around.
reply

I think my favorite fact about Catherine Zeta-Jones was when filming Chicago, the directors wanted her hair long. Catherine insisted on the bob because if it was long, then viewers would question if she was actually dancing.
Triple threats that come to mind also would be Kevin Richardson from Backstreet Boys and Antonio Banderas

Some are even more than triple threats. The likes of Ryan Gosling, Hugh Lorie and Others you can add musician(some many instruments as well, add director and producer as well. Which makes some like Bradly Cooper, Streisand, almost all of the original Brat pack. Jerry Lewis, Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and others sixth threats.

Andrew Garfield definitely deserved the top spot on the list. His performance in Tick Tick Boom absolutely blew me away. I can not get over how much raw emotion he put into those songs for what I'm pretty sure was his first singing role. I'd recommend it to everyone.

It shouldn't be a surprise, almost ever actor got started when they were young. My daughter's elementary school was focused on the performing arts, so my girl was singing, dancing, and acting at age 5. Musicals are the only plays little kids do.
reply

For everyone saying Hugh Jackman this and that, it was not a surprise. Yes hes amazing we love our X-Man triple threat. It was not a surprise. He started out in musical theater where you kinda need to act, sing, and dance.
reply

What about Daniel Radcliff? Everyone has known he can act since he started playing Harry Potter as a child, but he's become a chameleon since then, proving he can do absolutely anything, including singing and dancing.
reply

When I was a kid, I had a friend who was a triple threat. He could simultaneously produced sounds from three major orifices.
Why a threat though? Because at any moment he was capable of emptying an entire room.

reply

Rick Morannis? Kevin Kline? John C. Rylee? Meryl Streep? Goldie Hawn? Dan Ackroid? Colin Firth? Amy Adams? Maggie Smith? Robert Downey Jr? Charles Groden?
All older stars had to be triple threats or no movie.

NPH is talented, but I didn't think he'd need to be on this list even as an honorable mention. I thought everyone already knew he could act, dance, and sing. I mean, just watch the opening song of the 2013 Tonys.
reply

Jamie Foxx released his own album in 1994. Fifth one was in 2015. He was singing way before Golddigger came out. Hugh Jackman was a stage performer well before X-Men and The Greatest Showman.
reply

Wow. What a strange compilation of artists.
The multitalented and charismatic Hugh Jackman is just in Honorable Mentions section? What about Hugh Laurie? Nicole Kidman? Will Smith? Channing Tatum?

reply

Darren Criss needs more attention. He dances, sings, acts, writes and composes his own music, plays multiple instruments and can speak several languages. Idk why he's not bigger than he is.
reply

Was just reading an article where Anthony Rapp (Rent OBC) praising Andrew Garfield's performance. Always good when someone who knew the person you're playing thinks you've nailed it
reply

The thumbnail of Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago told me I would more than likely agree with you. I love her work in that movie! Sadly, I disagreed with half your other picks.
reply

Sorry, but Hugh Jackman was in the movie version of Les Miserables - if you didn't know he could sing by then, I'm not sure.
Also, we need a part 2, 3, 4. etcetera.

reply

this isn't the best video that I've seen. You missed a lot of legendary performers that put your list to shame. should have done more research. Judy Garland being one.
reply

Im a triple threat but never have even been given the opportunity to become a professional performer in my country due to discrimination as I am Neurodiverse
reply

Well with Christopher walken I guess I already knew that he could sing dance and act with an old movie he did called puss in boots its an oldie but a goodie
reply

I thought Johnny Depp was very good in Sweeny Todd, and so was Helena Bonham Carter. At the very least, they should have been in your Honourable Mentions.
reply

Can't argue with the #1. I remember Andrew in an interview claiming he wasn't really a singer, but Tik Tik Boom movie proved him wrong. Love the movie!
reply

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is also a producer (not a big one) and has some other titles under his belt as well. Quite talented and well established.
reply

A lot of time was spend on Dreamgirls, with zero mention of Jennifer Hudson, who -- ahem -- won an Oscar for her performance in that fine film.
reply

Ariana DeBose is the defintion of a triple threat. Both from her Broadway carrer and her Oscar winnning performance in West side Story
reply

Seriously Hugh Jackman honorable mention. He should be higher even top 5 in front Beyonce sorry beehive. EVEN FURTHER BACK BABBS
