Haven't seen all of these because I took a break for several years from American Idol. A lot of good picks! Agree with the Kelly Clarkson one. I'd put her in the top 3. Carrie Underwood's Alone was also fantastic. She nailed it.
I don't think Fantasia should've been number one. I wouldn't even put her in the top 10. Always found her overrated and a little screechy. I do think Clay Aiken's Unchained Melody is better than his version of Bridge Over Troubled Water, but I could be biased. I don't think anyone can match Art Garfunnkel's vocals in BOTW. It's one of my top 10 favorite songs. I also really liked Clay's version of Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me. He has a lovely voice. He should've won, not come in second!
I would also add Katherine McPhee's Over the Rainbow. I remember that performance being just gorgeous.

I would definitely have included David Cook's Billie Jean. He, Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert were probably my favorite contestants over the years. I would have ranked Clay's Solitaire over BOTW, though they were both great performances. And to this day, little makes me smile quite as much as his Build me up, Buttercup, though I suppose that is too light of a little confection for an epic performance list.
One other favorite from a contestant who left early was Bucky Covington's The Thunder Rolls. He may not have been one of the best singers on the show over the years, and he was never going to win, but there was something I really liked about his voice.

I don't think Fantasia was the best of the season, though I loved here arrangement for Summertime and arguably not the best of this list or any list where Melinda Doolittle is an honorable mention. I was even not going to split hairs between most successful winner for you pick of Kelly, though I think it's Carrie. When you put MindyDoo as honorable mention you voided this entire inventory.

OMG. literally when I first saw the top 10 one moment I thought of the Candice Glover Lovesong cover, from time to time I keep reminding this performance, is incredible. I've watched that season and when I saw that cover of Candice that traumatized my brain. It's been so many years and I keep reminding it every certain time and I keep singing her cover. She was so shocking with that performance

This was an iteresting compilation with some fantastic choices. Others could include Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Katharine McPhee, Imagine by David Archuleta, Band of Gold by Kimberly Locke, I Who Have Nothing by Jordin Sparks, and A House is Not a Home by Tamyra Gray

I'm not seeing it mentioned in the comments so I'm going to say it: Lee Dewyze's performance of 'Hallelujah' should have at least been an honorable mention. It's the only performance that I will randomly think about and rewatch.

Pia Toscano's I'll Stand by You would definitely be high on my list, and imagine by David Archuleta would make it as well, but I loved your list. Maybe my number one would be Hailey Reinhart's House of the Rising Sun.

I'm kinda dumbfounded how Fantasia is #1 on this list and Jordin Sparks isn't even on it, or Chris Daughtry for that matter. And Carrie Underwood and Clay Aiken so far down the list? Whose ranking these?

Bridge Over troubled water is only number 9! 9! That was a game-changing performance. I STILL remember it vividly 21 years later, and ive not seen it in full since. He was a phenomenal contestant

I remember hearing
Candice Glover singing Lovesong.
I was mesmerized by her.
It pissed me off when Nicki Minaj
ruined her performance
by yelling in her microphone.

I definitely agree with this list but Id almost flip it. But by a mile the best performances are Alone by Carrie, Bridge Over Troubled Water by Clay Aiken, and Summertime by Fantasia.

To Love Somebody, Solitaire, and This is the Night, Mack the Knife, and every other song he did on that show was perfection! Clay Aiken was and is still so amazing!

Melinda Doolitle was the greatest miscarriage of justice on this show. Even bigger than Clay Aiken or Adam Lambert. I gave up on this show after that travesty.

i think coming in second frees you up to pursue your career. First place you are more or less career wise in their control for i think its seven years.

Tremendously disappointed to not at least see an honorable mention for Katharine McPhee Somewhere Over The Rainbow -- A truly special AI moment.

All I know is that when Jennifer Hudson sang Circle of Life, I literally had chill bumps running all up and down my arms. It was fantastic.
