Whether or not we agree with the reasons all these people gave for refusing these various awards, we should admire ALL of them, not only for the various causes they highlighted through their refusals, but also that they stuck to their guns, followed their consciences, and did what they thought was right, under very overwhelming circumstances, knowing full well that not everyone would agree with them. Kudos to everyone on this list! Not every artist wants awards, and everyone on this list has achieved so much, in spite of these awards.

declining an award out of protest is beyond pretentious. But declining an award because you believe someone else deserved it more is beyond humble. Dolly Parton said she didn't feel that she deserved to be honoured like that because she never dabbled in Rock music, cuz she's primarily known for her extensive country-music back catalogue. So the only reason she decided to accept the Hall of Fame honour is if she did a Rock album, which she is currently working on.

Don't know if this should count but how 'bout Ving Rhames at the 1998 Golden Glode Awards. He didn't exactly refuse the Award but he gave it to his mentor Jack Lemmon. (It was also one of Lemmon's last public appearences)

For me refusing means you will know you can get it but choose not to get it. Tom Cruise chose to get his awards first.
