Another honorable mention: Audrey Hepburn. After Wait Until Dark in 1967, she later returned to the screen in 1976 in Robin And Marian alongside Sean Connery after taking time off to raise her two sons. Audrey would later make Bloodline in 1979 and They All Laughed in 1981 but her last movie was Always in 1989 after being convinced by Steven Spielberg to be in the movie which Audrey gladly accepted since she wanted to work with him. After that movie and until her death in 1993, she would be and ambassador with UNICEF.

Marlon Brando, Joe Pesci, James Stewart, and Daniel Day-Lewis are all absolute legends, and seeing how impressive they were after years of being out of the spotlight just proves it. Pesci especially showed just how versatile he could be, playing such a cool and collected character after being the poster child for hot tempered gangsters, yet he can still be just as intimidating.

Sean Astin said he took some time off from acting after Rudy to go to college and Lord of the Rings was his comeback role.
Mayim Bialik had some major time off from acting after Blossom to go to college to become neurologist and get married and have kids. Big Bang Theory was here first role back in the acting world.

Nice review watchmojo. But just wish you were more comprehensive and didn't sugarcoat the real reason ke huy stopped acting. He's talked about it at length. Hollywood in the 80s 90s and early 2000s was blatantly limiting and discriminatory towards asian and asian american actors. Only recently has this changed.

One entry I think you forgot. Piper Laurie as the religious zealot mother of horror prom queen Carrie. Piper had retired for 20+ years when DePalma called her. She got an Oscar nod as did Carrie, but horror did not win awards. She took up where she left off with many other roles.

I'm so delighted for Ke Huy Quan that he's found success again following years of being unable to find work. He's come a long way since his days as Data or Short Round, and hopefully he'll win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work as Waymond!

How is RDJ or John Travolta not on this list? Everyone knows Iron Mam saved RDJs career. And Travolta finally got his shit back after nearly 20 years of comeback attempts to star in one of the greatest films of all time.

3 years for Jennifer Lawrence hardly counts as an extended hiatus. She might've taken a break from acting, but she still was active enough to keep herself relevant in the industry. 5 yrs is more like an extended hiatus.
reply

I agree with all, but I think you shouldve given at least an honorable mention categoryJohn Travolta with Pulp Fiction, Michael J Fox with The Frighteners, and Ke Huys fellow Goonie Sean Astin with Fellowship of the Ring

I'm lucky enough to have traveled with Indy, never said die as a Goonie kid, and now I'm a part of the multiverse as an adult.
Ke Huy Quan is incredible and I've loved every moment of his journey in film.

David Carradine in Kill Bill. He worked a lot before that movie, but since the 90s most of his films were straight-to-video action flicks. Everybody said that Kill Bill resurrected his career.

When Jared Leto did Dallas Buyers Club and won the Oscar for it, that was his first film appearance after a six year hiatus because he was touring with his brothers band 30 Seconds To Mars.

Ke Huy Quan.
Brandon Frazier.
Joe Pesci.
Eddie Murphy.
Jennifer Lawrence.
Marlon Brando (may he rest in peace.
They all did an amazing job on their own performances.

I love James Stewart. He wasnt just a leading man In Hollywood. He was an American hero. There arent too many people who hold both distinctions nowadays.
reply

They forgot to mention Chris Tucker as Howard White in the movie AIR (2023.
It was his first movie in 7 years. Which is a long time if you ask me.

I haven't cared for the Oscars in a few years but this year I couldn't be indifferent to Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan. I'm really happy for them.
reply

While The Whale was an alright film, Brendan Fraser's performance really elevated it, and he poured his heart and soul into the project.
reply

I see Ke Huy Quan, I clicked. When I watched Everything Everywhere All At Once, I didnt recognize him. Im happy for him winning an award
reply

Hiatus paves the way for improvement as they all say. Actors all need breaks so that they can perform to the best of their ability.
reply

Im surprised Gloria Swanson was not in the list, the parallels with her character in Sunset Boulevard made it even more iconic
