Top 20 Greatest Heartbreak Ballads How can you overlook Michael Jacksons Shes Out of My Life? Quincy Jones said he had to leave Michaels cry/whimper/sob at the end because Michael just couldnt get through a single take without nearly breaking down. And, a bit of shame that you didnt highlight Bobby Womacks If You Think Youre Lonely Now and the Deeles Two Occasions, the two songs Mariah referenced in her We Belong Together--without those two songs (for which Mariah actually gave songwriting credits, her own song loses just a bit of its own heartbreak.
And ABBAs The Winner Takes It All should be on here as well. (And having Taylor Swift is a bit of a cheat since shes largely responsible for all of the heartbreaks she suffers)\r\n

End of the Road only number 12? You have got to be kidding! It's bar none the best heartbreak ballad ever written or performed. Some of the songs on this list, like Go Your Own Way, aren't even ballads. Some honorable mentions: Could've Been by Tiffany, Foolish Beat by Debbie Gibson, Every Rose Has Its Thorn by Poison, How Am I Supposed to Live Without You by Michael Bolton (also recorded by Laura Branigan, Look Away by Chicago, I'll Be Over You by Toto.

I'm sorry, but Driver's License makes me roll my eyes. It has great music, but the lyrics are about a 16-18 year old who is lamenting a first boyfriend, who apparently hung out with an older girl/woman, and seems to be older than the singer. And the singer implies that she will NEVER love anyone ever as well as she loves this one person.

Sometime Around Midnight by Airborne Toxic Event, I Don't Believe You (also Just Give Me a Reason) by Pink, Black by Pearl Jam, You Left it Up To Me by Indigo Girls, and You Don't Love Me Anymore by Weird Al (no, really) would all make great additions to this list. All the feels can be found in all these songs.

Let me just say as I'm watching this list and the numbers are getting closer to number one all I kept saying was Toni Braxton's Unbreak My Heart better being the top five and then I see Sinead O'Connor at number three and I'm like if this song is not at least number 2 I'm going to lose my s lmao thank you

OK, I agree with many songs here, but I feel like Back to Black by Amy Winehouse should have found it way there. I have never been in the situation described in the song, yet I can feel her pain ever so deeply as she conveys raw emotions with every single word.

I think Dolly's version of I Will Always Love You sounds more heartbreaking, honestly. I think, for me, the softer, quiet melancholy feels more heartbreaking. I love Whitney's version, as well though.
To add to this list: The Winner Takes it All by ABBA.

For me, it's Been A While by Staind, the Say Something cover by Pentatonix, and Something I Can Never Have by Nine Inch Nails.
As for the list, With or Without You, Someone You Loved and Dancing on My Own so good and easy go to songs.

Another good one is Backstreet Girl by The Rolling Stones. It's an amazingly beautiful song, but it's also very sad when you hear the lyrics. He's basically saying to his side piece that he only wants her to be around when he needs her.

I actually liked the slow version of Dancing on my own by Calum Scott. It always hits you hard.
Also, not sure if Jar of Hearts counts as a breakup song but for me its one of those songs that should be on the breakup playlist.

Tonight I Wanna Cry by Keith Urban should be on this list. The pain in his voice is so deep and moving
Michael Jackson couldn't finish She's Out of My Life without his voice cracking with emotion and should also be on the list

There are so many heartbreaking songs to choose from and many of my faves are already in the comments or video so I'll just add two more, both by Trisha Yearwood: I Would've Loved You Anyway and There Goes My Baby

Olivia Rodrigo's music kinda highlights some adolescent feelings, that you may not really empathize with if you missed out on them in your own life. I'm always like get over it when I hear those kinds of songs.

Thy will is about Hillary Scott from Lady Antebellums grandmother dying. My cousin played it at my Uncles funeral and it broke my heart. Im not one to shed a tear, even at a funeral, but this one took me out.

And where is ABBA's The Winner Takes It All? Often touted as the greatest breakup song of all time. Certainly should have been at least top 3. Better then almost every entry on this list.
reply

Calum Scotts and George Michaels versions of Robyns(dancing in my own, and Bonnie Raitts(I cant make you love me) were just as emotional as the original versions, but neither got a mention
reply

I'm kinda surprised My Heart Will Go On and I'll Never Love Again weren't on here. I guess maybe because those two go a step or two beyond just heartbreak into straight up grief.
reply

I really enjoyed how the narrator explained the meaning of these songs. So often I enjoy a tune but don't really understand the lyrics. This video really added to those songs.
reply

I will always love you was not written about a break-up. Dolly Parton wrote it for her business partner and mentor Porter Wagoner. They were never in an intimate relationship.
reply

Gordon Lightfoot's If You Could Read My Mind and Linda Ronstadt's Long, Long Time absolutely have to be on this list. Unbelievable that they weren't even considered!
reply

Good Thing Gone by Elle King is, to me, far and away the most underrated sad breakup song. And how could they forget Already Gone by Kelly Clarkson?
reply

I didn't expect them to be included but my go to heartbreak songs are One Last Cry by Brian McKnight and He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones.
reply

I missed Hurt by Christina Aguilera. Such a powerful vocal performance, one of the best of Christina, and with such a painfull message.
reply

Thanks for explaining Torn to me, because I always hated it thinking it was about a woman who had been assaulted and left for dead. 4: 50
reply

Tried to watch it, but the discrepancy between the volume of the songs and the narrators voice its beyond annoying
reply

Even though I love these songs Fools Gold by One Direction is amazing. I think I will always love you is better.
reply

Crying - Roy Orbison, Pictures of You - The Cure, Never Tear Us Apart - INXS, The Scientist - Coldplay
reply

It's All Coming Back To Me by Celine Dion is a good one. & Carrie Underwood's Cry Pretty is a heavy hitter
reply

Stop include Taylor Swift in each and every of your music tops! Unless you get paid for this of course; )
