There was another kind of blacklisting that you didn't really mention - and the most prominent name involved with this blacklist was William Haines. Haines was one of the most popular stars between 1925 and 1934. But word spread around Hollywood that he was gay. After that, he could not get an acting job, not even in supporting roles. However, he was also considered the foremost interior decorator in Hollywood, and was able to make a very good living designing homes for actors and actresses and, eventually designed sets for dozens of movies. Personally, I think that the old trope about gay men being great interior decorators came from how good he was. But after 1934, he was never in another movie, despite the fact that he lived until 1973.

A particular federal agency that investigates is mentioned several times here. This particular agency has also gone after political figures, like John F. Kennedy (and we all know how that ended. Since this agency is once again as out of control as it was during the reign of J. Edgar Hoover, it is time to say goodbye to this agency and farm out it's duties to other agencies.

These famous all had their careers ruined by paranoid right wingers pushing their lies on the country. I rather be blacklisted than ever associate with fascism and right wing bigotry that was well known during that time.

It's amazing how many names on this list were blacklisted due to the mid 20th century equivalent of the witch hunts. With Charlie Chaplin however, there were definitely other, more serious reasons to choose from.

We need another committee to investigate Un-American activities and George Soros should be the first person questioned. I think Soros should have his citizenship removed and he should be thrown out of the United States!

Good list, but it's so sad that artists are targeted like this. Even with today's abhorrence with celebrities who lean left or hint at leaning left, targeting artists is just U. S. censorship at its worst.

Because of being involved with the Red Scare, John Garfield died really young at the age of 39 which is so sad, he could have done so many more films if he hadn't been blacklisted

Orson Welles called out Elia Kazan for being a traitor during McCarthyism, and there were those who didnt give a standing ovation to Kazan when he won his honorary Oscar

The actress who played Snow White was definitely blacklisted. She wasn't allowed to be in any film's, because Walt Disney didn't want her voice to be in anything.

Maybe this would be considered more modern Hollywood, but Eartha Kitt was blacklisted for speaking up about the Vietnam War at a luncheon with Lady Bird Johnson.

Rebecca, you forgot to mention that Burl Ives was already an Oscar Winner for The Big Country before he was involved with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Poor Tippi Hedren, it must have caused her great trauma to be repeatedly attacked by mechanical birds, all for the sake of a shot.

It was not a fear of communism, considering its intrusion in present day America. It was recognition of the danger it presented.

Sad that many actors were blacklisted because of the Cold War and McCarthyism.
Even today actors are still being blacklisted.

This is difficulty that modern actors wouldn't see. Honestly though, I don't see modern Hollywood standing for this. I hope.

Lee Grant, acadamy award winner for best supporting actress for Shampoo 1975, was also blacklisted between 1952 till 1963.

Now the people who protested the blacklisting are blacklisting conservative Christians in their hypocrisy

As much as I love movies, and that is a lot some of dark stories of Hollywood and blacklisting just sad to hear

Proof that cancel culture is nothing new, rotten conservatives were already doing it for decades before SJWs.
