This could be because I had to spend the early part of my childhood hanging round my grandparents and they use to record everything on VHS to watch later, but it is because of them I know who some of theses people wore before what they are known for now. Maggie Smith was well before she did Harry Potter or Downton Abby, as I remember watching films such as Murder By Death, Death on the Nile and Clash of the Titans.
Samuel L Jackson I remember form watching for a kids TV series called Ghostwriter, really early 90s
Patrick Stewart I know off Excalibur, Lady Jane and 1984 Dune, all before he did Star Trek Next Gen.

I foresaw Viola Davis on an episode of Law & Order Criminal Intent. She went toe-to-toe with Vincent D'Onofrio. I wish they would do something together again. She was the villain but I still loved her. I have been so happy about her success because from the first minute I saw her act I was blown away. A few months later I saw her in episode Without a Trace. My mother and I used to talk about her all the time. She can play the most lovable character and she can scare the living stuff out of you.

7: 26 I am surprised that The Color Purple wasnt mentioned, as he had a role in that movie as well, and its the first one I remember seeing him in.
9: 31 Waaaaaiiit a minute here youre talking about actors who weve never seen young, you show other actors roles when they were significantly younger, but you also exclude Excalibur from Patrick Stewarts mentions? He didnt play a minor role there, after all!

Id say most of these have been acting in plays and small budget movies since the crack of day, but got bigger roles in that are now extremely popular and part of pop culture.
Also, the fact that actors are rising to same earlier these days, with so manny teen and early twenties rising actors, so when her actors rise to the spotlight in their thirsties or fourties, it seems like theyre ancient

Wow! that sure made me feel old.
I know the young Ian McKellan from from Dick Cavett interviews, Maggie Smith from The Prime of Miss Jean Brody, Samuel L Jackson from Do the Right Thing, Morgan Freeman was 43 in Brubaker (go ahead, suggest that 43 is old, I dare ya.
Or maybe in getting old myself, everyone else seems young (and I am quickly catching up with all of your list)

I would have added John Hurt. I first noticed him as Caligula in I, Claudius, but most people remember him first as the unfortunate Kane in Alien. Both made when he was in his mid-thirties. Later on, he was best remembered as the wand maker Ollivander in the Harry Potter films and The War Doctor, for Doctor Who fans. What an amazing actor and, like Alan Rickman, so tragic he's gone.

The 1st thing I saw Maggie Smith in was probably Clash of the Titans, but it was probably 9-10 yrs after it'd been made since I was only 1 when it came out. She played the goddess Thetis. Fun Fact: IDK how many ppl are aware, but her son is Toby Stephens. I don't think he got his big break till late in life either, though he was 27 when he did Twelfth Night.

I saw McKellen in a Macbeth production in 1978, perhaps it was that one. It was the first time I had seen good actors in a stellar production. McKellen and Judy Dench literally took my breath away as sat dumbstruck and hyperventilating. No film performance can ever beat the raw energy the whole cast, but especially McKellen and Dench radiated in that play.

I'M SO OLD I saw them all young. Maggie Smith in Young Cassidy, '65 that tells it, The Prime of Miss Jean Brody '69, an English film that took America by storm! You knew when you saw her. Rickman killed me in Truly, Madly, Deeply, only 2 actors in it. Who the hell is THAT? Inspired performances, see them if you haven't, you won't be sorry.

Truth be told, I have seen Sir Ian McKellan young. He was playing the French enforcer Chauvlain in the 'The Scarlett Pimpernell. I've also Seen Maggie Smith young in Clash of the Titans (Quite a looker) Patrick Stewart in 'I Claudius' (Naturally curly hair) Samuel L. Jackson in 'Patriot Games' (LCDR Robby Jackson, Naval Aviator)

I'm 57 and I've seen a lot of these folks young. I remember being a child and loving Easy Reader (Morgan Freeman) on the Electric Company. Saw Dame Maggie in California Suite and Clash of the Titans, and being a PBS junkie my whole life, I've seen Sir Pat and Sir Ian in several Shakespeare productions.

Absolutely no one has ever seen any of these actor's young, according to you, so a over sweeping generalisation, because guess what, some of us have been around a fair time. 10 top actors you May not have seen young. not, you haven't.

SO DISAPPOINTED! Where are the clips of James Earl Jones; first film role as the bombardier in in 1964's Dr. Stange Love? He's so cute and looks even younger his 33 years.
And Patrick Stewart in 1984's Dune? What a ripoff.

reply

Wow, really focusing on the kids. My generation has seen all of these actors young and old. Maybe you need to reword your hooks/headlines? How about Your favorite older actors were superstars when they were young too?
reply

Too bad you didn't show pics of them when they caught the acting bug and got their first role as actors. To see them when young and starting out would have been nice. Thanks for the video.
reply

I remember Sir Patrick Stewart as the Pretorian Guard commander Sejanus in the 1970s miniseries I, Claudius. Outside of Derek Jabobi as Claudius, Stewart stood out in a relatively minor role.
reply

To narrate a movie about my life Morgan Freeman not the best choice, but Samuel L. Jackson because of the number of motherfcker that would be needed to describe people and events.
reply

I think you left out a lot of honorable mentions regarding early movies of some of the actors, you mentioned: ) Some of them actually were on the screen in their young age: )
reply

First movie I saw Patrick Stewart in was Excalibur. Also, Liam Neesom, Helen Miranda, and Nigel Terry. Stewart also played Gurney Hailick in the original Dune movie.
reply

never heard of Viola Davis. She's a just a ubiquitous character actress. Kind of like Hattie McDaniel or Butterfly McQueen. Black actresses who are always around.
reply

Maybe you didn't know j. k. Simmons but anybody who watched the law-and-order franchise knew him as a psychiatrist named Emil. He was absolutely wonderful.
reply

You could have shown James Earl Jones in Dr Strangelove (1964) and Samuel L Jackson in Coming To America (1988) as samples of earlier movie roles.
reply

I IDd McKellan by his marvelous EYES!
Dame Maggie is always unmistakableeyes, voice, movements. Patrick Stewart by his presence. And voice.

reply

Patrick Stuart first came to notice when he played the Roman General Sejanus in I, Claudius released in 1974. He had hair back then.
reply

Sir Patrick Stewart played Sejanus, head of the Praetorian Guard, in I, Claudius (1976. Morgan Freeman appeared in a major role in Glory (1987.

If I earn myself a medical degree to be a doctor, no matter what else I didnt like I would always renew that license something to be proud of
reply

I beg to differ, Mojo. Just because YOU have not seen these people young does not mean I or anyone else hasn't. Please don't speak for others.
reply

One of my earliest memories of James Earl Jones was in Claudine with Dianne Carol (before she was on Dynasty) and Lawrence Hilton Jacobs.
reply

Great choices. My pick is number one, Morgan Freeman. Just love this man! He is a superb actor. I look forward to many more performances.
reply

I've seen Maggie Smith in Murder By Death ever since I was a kid, (she's very young) but it took me years to realize it was her!
