Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Two voices are better than one in these cases! For this list, well be looking at the most captivating songs from the musicals that were written for two characters to perform together. Some of these duets are crucial to the plot though, so beware of spoilers! Our countdown includes duets from Hamilton, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story and more! Which musical theater duo has the best musical chemistry?

I appreciate the almost impossible task of making such a list, but cheesy pop-song duets can hardly out-rank the classics. Here are just a few from the Sondheim canon alone:
There's Always a Woman from Anyone Can Whistle
Barcelona from Company
Too Many Mornings from Follies
It Would Have Been Wonderful from A Little Night Music
Poems from Pacific Overtures
A Little Priest from Sweeney Todd
Unworthy of Your Love from Assassins

I'm sorry but whoever makes the musical theatre lists is so biased towards certain shows and certain styles. The fact that Lily's Eyes from Secret Garden doesnt have its own spot. it is probably the greatest male/male duet in musical theatre. ever, followed by Youre Nothing Without Me from City of Angels. Both are show stoppers in their respective shows, they both are HUGE plot moments, and written better than most.

Way to start the list with a massive insult. Move On should be way higher on this list.
No no. I've now made it to number 16 and I'm already so annoyed with you. Duets number 20 and 16 should be in the top five and Bonnie and Clyde shouldn't be anywhere on this list.
Yep. this list would be better of it was backwards. And the omission of A Little Priest from Sweeney Todd is egregious.

So many of these musical duets are the greatest. I can think of a few others:
. Waltz for Eva and Che- Evita
. Therapy- Tick Tick Boom
. Alone in the Universe- Seussical the Musical
. Something to Believe In- Newsies the Musical
. Not My Father's Son- Kinky Boots
. The Phantom of the Opera- The Phantom of the Opera
. Written In the Stars- Aida the Musical

Okay, Im just gonna say it. Im not a fan of Hugh Jackmans voice. His pitch is off, his tone is pinched and thin in his high register. Hes a good actor but his singing is really really overrated. And casting Russel Crowe as Javier in the movie version was a musical DISASTER! You really do have to be able to sing to do Les miserables.

After listening to the album for the Broadway version of Bridges of Madison County, I was shocked to see just how short-lived it was; it was only on Broadway for only 4 months! It's mind-blowing to me that such a good show was cut so short. But hey, it won a Tony Award. I have one question, HOW HAS KELLI O'HARA NOT WON A TONY YET!

Lily's eyes! That song is breath taking. Do you love me never fails to make me cry. Such a great song. Everything from Cinderella is enchanting! The Confrontation is so powerful! For Good is the best friend song for the ages. Anything Sutton Foster does is fabulous! Thanks for the wonderful time!

You missed a wonderful duet, Bess, You is my Woman Now from Porgy and Bess. Might even beat the Carousel Bench Scene. And a quibble: Ten Minutes Ago from Cinderella: the show was written for television, not the stage. It was only years later that it was translated and expanded for Broadway.

Im a little upset that all the wasted time is 18 that song is a musical masterpiece that brings tears to my eyes its a stunningly beautiful piece and I know people wont Liek this but its worthy of the top 5 belive it has a place and its definitely better the anything goes

I know it's subjective. BUT COME ON! Bonnie and Clyde gets a top 20 whilst Lilys Eyes or any other ballad from the Secret Garden doesn't? But the biggest shocker here. NOTHING FOR SIDE SHOW? WHO WILL LOVE ME AS I AM, I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU? SHAME ON YOU, MS MOJO! ;)

We couldn't forget the original 1957 Cinderella (the only LIVE version of the three TV versions of the musical Cinderella.
Julie Andrews' singing, dancing, expressing, and the ability of balancing them in the live performance, are divine.

Lots of questionable choices here. Lily's Eyes from Secret Garden is mentioned, but not recognized as one of the best. Also you completely ignored Wheels of a Dream from Ragtime which is AMAZING, and Still from Titanic.

This was a hoot - so many I didnt know! - but my favorite duet is, I Remember It Well from Gigi. Its so poignant. I thought youd mention it for sure as a follow up to Fiddlers Do You Love Me? Thanks for a terrific video.

Muny in St Louis checklist for this summer: Rent, West Side Story, little shop of horrors, and Chess. and throw in the two shows i've seen (thus far) on tour this year: Les Miserables and Wicked. I approve: )
reply

Oh my gosh! The Confrontation from Les Miserables is so good. Its such an interesting song because you get to hear the different sides of the two men blended together and put into passionate declarations

About suddenly seymour, You did not indicate that Ellen greene, who originated the role of Audry in 1982, reprise her role in the film and again -at 64 years old - did a magnificent reprise in 2015.

I love For Good in Wicked. I dont know how many times Ive said Wicked is my favorite musical but I love it so much. I just love how Stephen Sondheim did it. This duet touches my heart all the time

Sue Me, from Guys and Dolls. Twin Soliloquies, from South Pacific. He and She, from Boys from Syracuse. The Rain in Spain, from My Fair Lady. Make Believe, from Show Boat. I date myself.

Tonight is my favorite song in _West Side Story. _ it's very sweet and beautiful when you hear it the first time, and oh so tragic yet still beautiful every time after that.
reply

How could you omit, What You Mean to Me from Finding Neverland? Such a glorious, stirring and sensual duet with impeccable harmonies, mostly sung by the female soprano part.
reply

Written in the Stars from Aida the Musical is one of my favs
Also not just the duets but the general vocal blending in Hadestown and also Shrek the Musicsl deserve a mention

reply

I'm disappointed to not see anything from City of Angels. The Tennis Song is a great flirtatious song, and What You Don't Know About Women is a great comeuppance song.
reply

Reading through all the comments sure reinforces the old adage,
Opinions are like assholes: Everybody has one, and everybody thinks that everybody else's stinks.

reply

I would have enjoyed it if you'd played the whole song by the best duo. Just getting several options and never hearing the whole thing is annoying and frustrating.
reply

I Know Him So Well is the most famous song from Chess?
Um. gestures at One Night in Bangkok and the 15 nations where it hit the top 10 on the pop charts

reply

Will Somebody Other Than The People Who Made The Film Out Of The Play Cats Or The Play Phantom Of The Opera Make A Movie Or Television Series based on Chess?
reply

From West Side Story- While Tonight is wonderful as is I Have a Love, I think Somewhere and One Hand One Heart are just as worthy, if not better.
reply

In His Eyes from Jekyll and Hyde the musical should be on this list! That musical does not get the respect or appreciation it deserves, in my opinion!
reply

I have to say for Cinderella I would have picked Impossible. It is just so much fun, and the reprise of it later in the musical is well done also.
