In retrospect, then men in Old Hollywood films were red flags. For this list, well be looking at the most problematic leading male characters from The Golden Age of Hollywood films. Our countdown includes Annie Get Your Gun, Gigi, Some Like It Hot, and more! Which of these classic love interests would set off YOUR warning bells?

STRONGLY disagree with #8. Rhett honest and forward about his intentions. He never belittled Scarlett, in fact, he knew her strength and admired her determination when everyone demeaned her for it. He was the one to call her out of her pretentious and toxicity. If he was ever bad news, he did everything to redeem himself, he fought for the south, gave to charities, won the graces of his neighbors, everything he could to establish a good reputation for their daughter, even if Scarlett didn't appreciate him.
If anyone should be on that list, it's ASHLEY. He comes off as a respected gentlemen but was never honest to Scarlett or Melanie and was emotionally unfaithful.
As for #6, Gaston was tired of snooty Parisian society and having to adjust to it, that's why he loved being with Gigi and her grandmother because he can be more himself. And he actually saw what Gigi was talking about when he wanted her to be his mistress, that's why he chose to marry her instead.

To say that Rhett Butler has red flags here. Is totally ignoring the huge, big as a barn, red banners that Scarlet flies. Rhett was only like this to Scarlet when she pushed him very very far. Every other woman he tried very well. Scarlet was a spoilt monster. She treated every black person horribly. Even though they did so much for her. even save her life. She was relieved, maybe glad when her first husband, Melanie's brother, was killed in battle. She did not mind that her 2nd husband was killed either. And most of all she was always after Melanie's husband, at times even openly after him. Most of the time while she was married too.

The Music Man is what got me into bands in schools, I definitely did not want to be like Professor Hill (Robert Preston, and later Matthew Broderick. As a traveling salesman/swindler, a few of his moves were questionable. Like the song MsMojo mentions, another one where Buddy Hacket's character gives him advice on how to woo her, Marion The Librarian where he chases her around the library. Or, the duet with Marion and her mother while their daughter Amaryllis (sp) plays the piano, and her mom is trying to convince her to give him a chance. In the end, he softens, she likes him, he gets his Boys Brass Band to lighten up the town, etc.

And the reason why we all love It's a wonderful life is that Jimmy Stewart is a kind and attentive husband, a caring father and a good citizen despite his depression. One of the best portrayal of a man in a marriage in old hollywood. Cary Grant is also lovely in Penny Serenade as a grief-stricken father. So these red flags you depict are not how men used to be, but portrayals of abusive cads. Sadly there are still many guys who reseemble those in modern life. Especially the one depicted by Brando.

Seems like most are missing the point of the movies back then. They were entertainment, not to be used as social rules of life. Do you think that characters like John Wick exist? That all the shooting going on can happen anywhere? Yet those movies are hugely popular. It's hard nowadays to see a really good movie meant strictly for entertainment because most are trying to push this or that social agenda. That's probably why most action movies make so much money. They are just for entertainment.

In high school we watched My Fair Lady and my Drama teacher and I had an argument because she said that my fair lady is regarded as the best love story of all time and after watching the movie I just couldn't see why. She claimed that it's not the whole relationship and that It's about the start of a relationship and I just saw him as a pig who treats women like crap and retreated a Liza like a lab rat. I still stand by that even to this day

As a women myself i didnt like how back then women had like no power or freedom to speak there minds, that why we have international womens day and women rights but i feel like that has gone in the other direction now, but yeah most of theses scenes were probably be red flags especially like the possessiveness and just the treating of women was horrible I know it was back then but still it was awful.

What about Horace Vandergelder from Hello Dolly? Hes only looking for a woman to basically be his maid. He sings a song about it It Takes A Woman.
Otherwise yes I agree with this list. This could be top 20 or volumes of them.
Its reverse culture shock. Instead of being shocked by something new and unfamiliar, were being shocked by what we have already done.

They forgot Carousel. when a hit is like a kiss, fantasizing domestic abuse is love. Can't watch it either for that reason. Or Holiday Inn. where both male leads manipulate the female lead to get what THEY want, not in her best interests. This made what should have been a fun Christmas watching a little deflated by the end of the movie for all watching it.

Every one of these guys bugged me, and I never could understand why they were held up so highly. Not sure which is worse, the Varjak line I recall (People DO belong to other people) or the Higgins closing in My Fair Lady (Eliza, where the devil are my slippers. It's as if Hollywood was teaching entire generations of young men how to be terrible partners.

Oh the irony of you complaining about a man pretending to be something he isn't (especially when he's pretending to be a woman, yet this is exactly what trans identifying men do all the time, and many don't tell those who they date what they are, but you have no problem with that. Why does the word hypocrites spring to mind?

i was sooooooo disappointed with how Philadelphia story ended! But for US of those times it was the only logical conclusion - the happy ending for reunited married couple. God forbid a married woman in a movie would understand what a prick her husband is! it would make too many women in real life rethink their marriage lol

Now, let's consider Kiss Me Kate in the context of its source material, Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Petrucchio doesn't treat Katherine the way he does for his own amusement, he's trying to teach her that she doesn't get to demand everything her way just because she thinks she deserves it.

In the 1941 The Wolfman, London Chaney Jr. 's character, Larry Talbot, is a literal peeping Tom who stalks and coerces Gwen to the point where she finally relents and agrees to go on a date with him. I had never seen the entire movie until last year on the big screen. His character is just awful.

This is so much like my family now when we watch movies together! We acknowledge each others no fly zone. Mom does not like Clint Eastwood, I don't care for Walter Brennan or Jimmy Stewart and Sis will not watch Mel Gibson. Thank goodness we all agree on Denzel and John Wick

Love your vids, kid, you do a great job. Rhett Butler was wrong to get drunk and force himself on Scarlettjust as she was wrong to marry him for his money, then constantly wave her desire for Ashley under his nose. He should have left her before it got to that point.

I think your choice of Oklahoma is silly. The truly problematic man is the guy who she goes to the dance with who tries to rpe her and later kill her and Curly. Two better choices on here would be The Quiet Man and Carousel which both glorify violence toward women.
reply

Thank you so much for this video because it Has to be a reminder to people why the womens movement became a thing so many men are thinking that it just came out of nowhere for no reason theres a reason why feminism became a thing
Dont ever forget

This is all just nonsense, this is why we have babies masquerading as men with no backbone and also this is why men are transitioning into women, I agree with some of the list though, but I rather them than the weak pussies called men today
reply

Most of the men in these movies have character arcs. They grow and improve. Rhett is one of the exceptions. But you're judging them by only the beginning of the movie. People change, so character arcs are them changing. Getting better.

Adam Pontipee actually changes by the end of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers when he realises how wrong he was especially when he finds out he is a father. He eventually apologies to Millie. so he did have some redeeming qualities.

I've lost track of all the slasher movies I've seen, but even i couldn't get through a James Bond movie. Sure Jason will kill you, but at least he wouldn't verbally degrade you and act like he's in the right the whole time
reply

You missed all of the John Wayne romances, where he treated women terribly, and spanked them for misbehaving. Movies like The Quiet Man and Donavans Reef. Im sure there were more, but I managed to block them out.
reply

Thank you for this! Excellent examples! One I would have added - or could be the seed for a new list, since this isn't complete, as noted in other comments, would be abusive boyfriend/husband Billy Bigelow from Carousel!

I think we can blame George Bernard Shaw for Henry Higgins. I've seen Leslie Howard's performance in Pygmalion and it is the same character with less singing. Makes me curious about GBS's relationships with women.
reply

jerks unforgivable no I wouldn't dare to date at all girls have the right to date anyone but these jerks Neanderthals egotistical bad boys just mean cold hearted wrong no woman deserves to be treated like that
reply

Society, politics, religion, literature, radio, movies, television etc have been programming us throughout history (particularly women.
With the upper hand, as per usual, going to men (the patriarchy.

I am afraid that man are seriously confused with a modern-day with women stepping out from a shadow. That solves many problems but creat a new ones. I am content with this change in women's position.
reply

Rhett Butler rapes Scarlett. Say it. He does in the book and he does in the movie. And she enjoys it. And the book was written by a woman. I am a woman, too. It didnt hit me until I grew up.
reply

At the end of the day has anyone looked on line lately or had a look at the papers or watched any music videos whats changed only difference now the woman are wearing less clothes
