You could argue that Off The Wall was a big comeback for Michael Jackson. People often forget that in the several years leading up to this album, he and his brothers music was not selling nearly as much as it was in the early 70s. Thank God for 1978s Destiny album he did with his brothers that became their first album to nearly crack the Top 10 and the single Shake Your Body actually did reach the Top 10. If not for that album and the hit single, they were getting ready to be canned by CBS Records until Michael was able to convince the president of the label to let them write and produce all the songs. Then 9 months later Off The Wall came out and redefined Michaels solo career; especially when his last solo album with Motown, 1975s Forever, Michael, only peaked at #101 on Billboards Top 200. Great list but still.

I'm sorry but this list is not complete without Believe from Cher. One of the greatest comebacks of all time. Believe is more deserving than Madonna's Ray of Light. Ray of Light is indeed a great album, but it was not a true revival for Madonna since she had just won the Golden Globe the year before and received great acclaim for the Evita soundtrack that even took an Oscar for You must love me, so Madonna was still relevant when Ray of light was released. On the other hand, it had been almost a decade since Cher's last hit album, and she was all but forgotten when Believe was released. Please make this right MsMojo.

I think that Madonna's biggest comeback is her album 'Confessions on a Dance Floor. Her career was in a huge decline after she released her 2003 album American Life.
Confessions on a Dance Floor was a MASSIVE commersial success, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 4 million copies worldwide, and it also went on becoming one of the best selling albums by women in history. Also her Confessions Tour was the highest grossing tour of all time, before it was surpassed by her next tour, the sticky & sweet tour (2009.

Even though Liz Phairs self-titled album was slated by critics like Pitchfork which gave it a 0 rating, it revived her career and gave her her biggest hit to date, Why Cant I. She was deemed a sell-out for riding the pop/rock wave fronted by teen stars like Avril, but years later the critics like Pitchfork admitted that they had been too harsh on the album since it was a huge shift from her earlier acclaimed indie albums.

Now hear me out, cuz I take issue with Ray of Light's inclusion. Madonna just had a multiplatinum album (Bedtime Stories, a multiplatinum compilation album (Something to Remember, the longest #1 of her career (Take a Bow, won a Golden Globe for a top grossing musical with multiplatinum soundtrack. stop me when I get to the time where her career needed to be revived.

Madonna once again set a trend and put EDM on mainstream radio. Ray of Light should have won album of the year, but was given to Lauryn Hill (I bet no one can name 3 songs or more on that album. After Ray of Light you heard EDM and dance music by DJs on American radio. Madonna was always making trends and opening the doors for other artists.

Emancipation of Mimi put mariah on fixated state in the music industry. It was fresh, it's like she's gone into another debut. Here she gave it all, all her voice can produce, regardless if she strains she does it all at the top of her lungs. She embraces her imperfections and she just enjoys the whole saga.

I would like to think that if this has been an expanded list, Donna Summers 1988 Another Place and Time would be recognized as her great dance comeback after the turbulent years she endured at Geffen Records with less successful efforts post the disco era.

I would definitely add Miley Cyrus - Plastic Hearts as an honorable mention. Mileys albums were flopping, and her EP She is Coming flopped so hard, she had to scrap her Idea for a bangerz revival. But Plastic Hearts revived her career.

I don't agree with the Kylie one. Before Fever there was Light Years and it was a hit back then. Went #1 in Australia and #2 in UK, and 4x platinum. Of course Fever had a bigger sales and impact but her carrer was back on track already

Being honest, I think American Idiot should be number 2. After Time of Your Life the band didn't have any big hit in the middle. And we are talking about 7 years difference here. Mariah Carey was not flopping for sooo long.

Theres no question that The Emancipation of Mimi and Ray of Light were two of the most critical albums in the careers of Mariah and Madonna. Otherwise they would have been possibly faded a long long time ago.

I think, as far as image is concerned, Madonna becoming a mother and reinventing herself as maternal (intentional or not) and spiritual was redemption. Being earthy and new age was trendy in the mid late eighties.

The Emancipation of Mimi is such a phenomenal album. The songs are too popular and too hot to handle - We Belong Together was hailed as song of the decade. A legendary comeback for the Songbird Supreme.

Mariah with Emancipation of Mimi really cemented her career in 2000s, and up until now her music is still timeless. My personal favorite from that album is Fly like a bird and Circles.

Fever, Ray Of Light and The Emancipation Of Mimi are some of my all-time favourite CDs. I'm glad they were featured here and were such crucial points for their artists' careers.

I cry to this day that I was given Tina's Private Dancer album by my favorite aunt and it was stolen when we moved! I remember vividly putting that vinyl on the turntable!

As much recognition that The Emancipation of Mimi gets, its not enough. There SO many perfect and well crafted songs on that album like Circles and Fly Like a Bird

I agree with most of them, but really #1 should be The Woman in Me, by Shania Twain, after the failure of her debut album, The Woman in Me brought Shania to fame.

I would say Cher's Believe album really put her back in the top echelon of pop stars after about a decade of middle of the road albums/singles.

Madonna could be on the list two times for Ray Of Light and Confessions On A Dancefloor. Kylie's Tension is a good example too: D

The irony of the aforementioned Ray of Light not having a US #1 hit unlike its predecessor Bedtime Stories.
