Minecraft in Oculus Rift - Hands-On Gameplay
video description
What you want is a more realistic model, think: the ARMA alt button. by hitting the alt button in an ARMA game, you can maintain your movement, but turn your head, not your aim.
Games like ARMA and Star Citizen are already doing this for their VR systems, which I think is a fantastic move in the right direction.
You dont have to turn your whole body to look in a different direction in real life, why should it be any different in a video game. Why should we have to throw away our old control system just because VR is thrown into the mix?\r\n

I don't understand why they didn't leave the controls exactly as they are in the game normally, but decouple the camera from the cursor. So the right analogue stick controls aim, but the Oculus controls just the camera. That way the right analogue more or less acts as your hands, the left acts like your legs, and the Oculus just acts as your head or viewing angle. You don't turn with your head in real life, why make the game control that way? Especially when you are limited in your ability to turn your head.

-comfort mode- is sure to go down in history as a hilarious blooper of the early days of VR. Does ANYONE find those jarring snap-turns MORE comfortable than any kind of unrestricted turning?
Like the guy in the video says, it's those instant 0%-100% accelerations that contribute most of the problem for people susceptible to VR sickness, and if you ask me game developers are long overdue to eliminate that design feature anyways.

Devs need to think outside the box a little with traditional first person games. Rather than a straight port, give your avatar a chunky mech or a little jetpack even, anything that mitigates the disconnect between your character and what you're doing in the real world will greatly reduce the risk of nausea.
Bad experiences like this could really damage VR's chances of main stream success.

Wow my dreams of vr are smashed after seeing this, the first honest impression of a vr experience. It really is too good to be true, I knew technology just wasnt there yet like they said in the video. With PS vr coming out this year and it being inferior to oculus, this is going to be just another gimmick at this time, like kinect or eye toy. Maybe one day i suppose.

I wish the hosts could, like, stop saying -like- so much. It's, like, really annoying. Can't they, like, try to speak like actual, like, grown adults rather, than, like, teenagers? Has anyone tried to, like, count the number of -likes- in this, like, video? I bet it'd be, like, really high.

They need to slow the Steve down for crying out loud. That is like VR 101. Locomotion is one thing but humans running around at 15-20mph is trouble. Give him a nice slow walk speed. I get that getting places would be tougher but like in real life it doesn't feel as daunting when you're there.

Just like every new system, it starts off with problems. Eventually the problems get solved over time and the new solutions is what people are looking for. VR is a new product and ofc its going to have issues. You just have to let them be solved overtime as the product matures.

seems like it'd be pretty comfortable to play it in the couch mode for moving around, and then jump into the actual world when you want to admire a location or you have some standstill mining/building to do (assuming the couch-world transition doesn't feel jarring.

I have about 200 hours of Minecraft on the DK1. I guess it's not for everyone, which is a good thing, considering the type of people who like to complain and feel 'disappointed' without knowing a thing about VR or even tried it. Good, stay away.

Funny how the Minecraft (Minecrift) VR mod is done FAR better than the official VR. I stick to that if I want to play Minecraft in VR. AND I get Shader support, so it can look very pretty too: )

I really enjoy the Minecrift mod for Minecraft on the dk2, so I don't see how the official rift support would be a worse experience.

Great video considering the lack of mcelroy's. Would love to see more discussions on vr with these two in a similar format.

HTC Vive would definitely be the way to go. Being able to physically use your hands to place blocks would be amazing.

Playing Minecrift on my DK2 was always more tolerable when I was standing. Playing while sitting was a barf fest.

They took 10 minutes to complain about one part of the game. Something that can be fixed pretty easily.
