Why organizing in games is so much more fun

What makes organizing such a chore in real life, but so much fun in video games? This is wild. What is the term organizing even mean here? What level of cleanliness determines organized and how is that decided? Surely that can be different between different people and this study quoted for 45 secs before disappearing off into pattern drawing land doesnt answer any of that. In fact, in the game design world, modeling the world is often looked down on as a technique because it doesnt matter if the game doesnt reflect real life (even if the games advertising is about realism. It matters if it feels good to play and that goal is most of the time tangential to how well you model the real world. This is obvious when you think about work games. Do these games model working in a corporate or boring workplace well? Id argue that just by being a game, it cant do that. Games abstract and if Death Stranding most likely putting a weight limit in because thats just what rpgs do creates game design issues not accurate world-referencing ones. I find it hard to imagine a meaningful correlation between those that do/dont organize in real life and the genre of games they play. Ill tell you, anecdotally for me, I have a hell of a lot more motivation traversing an entire world that I can rarely find for 10 hour cook shifts, but your brain barely knows the difference. The lights on your monitor flash in happy ways that please your brain but your body is still and your eyes transfixed in one spot for unnaturally long amounts of times. I have no more evidence than you do of my opinion however quoting science articles so lazily makes me think this whole video would be more honest if it just existed as it is. An opinion piece.\r\n

i somehow in neo scavenger always make room. yeah it might make clutter things up but it feels satisfying when i fit a shotgun inside my cart when it was already full. there is an auto sort system that i sometimes use to help me sort it.
imagen a full can of coffee powder emptied into a bottle to make room for small object that dont fit in a bottle and i place that coffee can into a backpack and do that some more times until i have the empty space i need

I have ADHD and when I worked at a grocery store deli, my favorite task was restocking the drink cooler. Something about lining things up and facing them and having things organized in my own little system just makes my brain so happy. I also used to work in a mail room and sorting mail does the same thing for me. But sorting my own stuff just makes me overwhelmed and I DON'T KNOW WHY.

How could you not include Terraria which has the biggest organizers across any other game. People(myself included) have made huge warehouses/builds dedicated to organizing all the stuff you can collect in this game. The organization part of Terraria makes all the games you picked look like well nothing. The only one that comes close is WOW.

i watched this video thinking 'lol i'm a disorganized mess but this won't motivate me to fix it-, then i got halfway through the video and decided to clear my email inbox so congrats for motivating me to clean something i guess

I would Love if my fridge acted like that kind of inventory system. I would put So many non food based items in there. Imagine freshly laundered and still warm clothes being selected from your refrigerator in the middle of winter!

So is polygon moving to a more serious stance? Because the last video I watched on polygon was rating walking simulator by how good the walking is, and this is way more serious and actually informative.

Okay, I love the fact that you guys put that little squiggle as -Libra- and -sailor-s knot-, because I put it down as -angel-hair pasta- so it it goes in the pasta subsection of my food category!

And Wilmot's Warehouse will be free on the EGS next week. I'll get it, but my time will be taken up by the fact that the day after, Horizon Zero Dawn comes to Steam. I've already preordered.

I hate organizing thing in real life I'm bad at it. But in video games I love it especially in minecraft when I realize I'm missing something I go into a frenzy of organization of EVERYTHING

I like text only inventories though. Not everything in every videogame has to be visual, even though it-s a visual medium.
But let-s agree to disagree on this. Also, nice video.

Actually she is organizing it the correct way, look where the handle of the bag is.
When you hold the bag in your hand by the handle the items are in correct orientation.

Virtual hording for me meant whenever I couldn't carry more ammo in an game like Half-Life I'd fire half what I was carrying and write down the quantity somewhere so I could save it.

I've spent 2 hours on Wilmot's Warehouse and I didn't even notice that much time passing. It's so satisfying reorganising the stuff and deciding on how to group new unlocks

I had gotten around to organizing my clothes in my drawer a few weeks ago and while I won't get into ALL the details finding pants or a shirt, or socks has gotten WAY easier now.

I think a change was made to wilmot's warehouse, because the pictures are way more abstract now. Too abstract maybe, because I just ended up doing color sorting.

when my girlfriend played RE4, every time she got a new weapon she handed the controller to me and let me reorganize the case. it soothed my ADHD Virgo mind SO MUCH

Jeez I thought I was doing good after cleaning out my room, now you're making me acknowledge the years of digital hoarding on my laptop and phone?

I love tetris and watching things neatly fall into place, but wilmot's warehouse looks like a tool that the devil would use to punish my adhd ass

The difficulty of deciding which gear to keep and which to dump in Destiny 2 is what I hate about managing my inventory when I play it

Dark Data, -looks at my 10+ year old downloads folder-
So what you're saying is my harddrive is the Dark Souls of data management?

The thing about video games is also that the items are meant to fit into the space. Nothing is gonna be just 5mm to large for the shelf.

slime rancher is a rly good example of a game that makes organisation fun, it kinda sucks it wasnt included. overall good vid tho

My favorite 3DS game is organizing all the apps on the system menu. Why do they make consoles that don-t let you do this?
reply

Alternatively, if you're one of my friends, you just dump everything in random chests and force me to organize it afterwards.
