Dorm room movie posters + games: a match made in hell

Some films have just the right combination of crime, drama, and perceived gravitas. They crystallize into a form of concentrated catnip for the adolescent brain. We honor them by making them a permanent part of our lives, by buying the posters, and sometimes, playing the terrible, terrible games. Also, we know that The Sopranos isn't a movie. Gimme a break

Fun fact(s): the iconic opening scene (in the Godfather) in which Marlon Brandeau monologues for like 5 minutes while petting a cat was partially unintentional. The story goes that Marlon showed up on the day of shooting with a random stray cat he found, and he asked if he could do the scene while petting the cat. Coppola was like -sure, - not realizing that the image of a big scary tough guy mob boss sitting back in a cushy chair petting a cat while partially obscured in shadow would become one of the most iconic villain cliches out there. It was mainly known for being copied by a James Bond movie, but I can keep this relevant to video games because the whole -villain with a cat- thing heavily played into the design for Giovanni, the Big Bad of Team Rocket in Pokemon! Though Giovanni has been redesigned several times, his appearance is heavily based on the character of Vito Corleone, hence Giovanni's signature Persian that he always has with him for whatever reason. Personally, I speculate that the name Giovanni was chosen for the English version of the game primarily because it was Italian, and they wanted to embody the -tough guy mob boss vito corleone- vibe.
I could literally go on about this for hours but yeah -tl; dr: The Godfather was more important to Pokemon than its own video game adaptation. -

Thanks, Pat, I finally understand why these types of antihero-stories don't work as intended. Like, I'm not the target audience of sad, lonely men, so I just accepted that I'll never get it. But now I think it's primarily about agency. Be it heroes or antiheroes or villain-protagonists, all the way from the Joker to Batman, what they all have in common is agency. They affect the world around them. And for poor, disenfranchised, working class folks, who toil away their time, energy and health, the idea of having agency is mesmerizing. Being a bad guy and dying a horrible death is not a bad thing, because we already sold our soul to capitalism anyway and the future doesn't exist anymore. Might as well have some fun.

My favorite part of your character -Forrest Gumping- his way through the Godfather game was when Michael gets hasseled by the police officer the first time. Not content to simply have the same officer harass both Michael and your PC, they have a second, new police officer added to the scene who focuses on your character exclusively while the movie-original one harasses Michael.
It reminded me of those, like, old disney cartoons starring dogs. and how if the human faced a bully, that bully would have a big dog that would bully the dog at the same time. I'm. I'm not expressing myself well, here. but it was weirdly adorable to me.

I like this video's main observation. Probably the most successful -awful guy brought low by toxic masculinity- story I've seen is Rusty Venture in the Venture Bros, Because absolutely nobody can mistake him for an aspirational figure, but since he's the protagonist we can see the SUCCESSFUL toxic men for the terrible people they are.

Damn, thanks for that jab at the lead Garfield mug. I have two of them in my cabinet that I got from my Grandma. Used to dip oreos in them as a kid. Haven't used them in ages, but they're definitely going on a display shelf somewhere now instead of my kitchen cabinet.

Not only did Pat effortlessly anticipate the -he's literally me- meme 2 years earlier, he also managed to explain its appeal in a nuanced and non-condescending way while still pointing out the ridiculousness of the whole genre of misunderstood sad bad man movies

-The game lets you wear cool hats-- that's all I needed to hear bucko, i would join a satanic cult if they gave me a cool hat. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I would join any satanic cult under most circumstances. Still, a cool hat would be a major plus.

I only found out from this video that the Garfield mugs I've been drinking milk out of for years had lead paint. Paused the video and looked it up then called to ask my parents and turned out we did in fact have 2 of the recalled mugs. Thanks Pat

Headcanon: In Scarface: The World is Yours, Tony's still dead and the entire game is a delusion caused by his life flashing before his eyes as his consciousness goes to sleep for the last time, as per the Squall is Dead hypothesis.

probably the most incredible thing about the sopranos video game is that your ghost dad was KILLED BY TONY and at the end when they initiate you or whatever, THE DAD IS THERE! AND HE APPROVES OF YOU JOINING HIS MURDERER! WHAT!

wow i wish i had a job that payed tens of thousands of dollars per year for me to make a highly conceptual, theory based essay that leans heavily on the thesis into a digestible 10+ minute video on a like monthly basis

i like how even though this is a joke video, it still carries a relevant message: people unfortunately idolize shitty horrible reprobable characters. i think this is one of those toxic masculinity things.

I've never seen any of these films (which is why I only just watched this video) but I'm now realizing that I did think all the different plot points came from one movie. possibly two

Truffaut was right. Just as it's impossible to make an anti-war war film, it's impossible to make an anti-hero cautionary tale actually caution people away from doing the Dumb Thing.

---- -You-re helping! ---- As a 90-s baby who had to sit through EVERY boyfriend I had -show- me -Scarface-, The -Godfather- trilogy and -Resevoir Dogs- I thoroughly enjoyed this video.

Fun fact the fight club game has an anti piracy method where you do no damage and die in one hit, and every time you die it gives you an insult
Please dont ask why I pirated the game

It took my until the last 5 seconds of the video to realise that behind Pat is a mirror and not an ironic painting of the banjo and guitar in the same positions they happen to be in

OMG that Garfield cup has lead in it! My family has been drinking out of those cups for a long time. Like a really long time. Maybe this is why I have ADD and dyslexia.

This disconnect between what was intended and what many seem to take away is how I feel about Wolf of Wall Street.
That would prabs be a pretty shite game though.

It definitely reflects the themes from the movies. The ugly side that's not shown in the movie, the gritty gore that the main cast is too good for.
reply

Pat how do you make me watch a thirteen-minute video on films I do not want to watch and video games I do not want to play and make me enjoy it?

1: 05 This video may have saved my life, I own that mug and didn't know it had been recalled, luckily I've only ever used it a couple of times

I'm sorry this is great and all but isn't this just an excuse for a gaming journalist to talk about film instead of something gaming related?

I had no idea there was an actual Scarface video game because I always thought that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was the Scarface video game

Godfather fan fiction is such a funny prospect
