Honestly, I'm a huge fan of Supergiant games and I think a lot of what's fantastic about Hades has been true of many of their other games (art, characters, story, music, gameplay, world design, narration (their Bafta couldn't be more deserved. I'm also a huge fan of roguelikes because I've always been more interested in learning about games than finishing them and I love the meta-progression. Roguelikes are amazing games for picking up just for a bit at short notice. They're designed around high quality gameplay and world-building and experience really matters. They aren't usually really about the story. Dead Cells for instance gives you bits of information like Bloodborne, but it's much more about the atmosphere and huge variety of areas you come across, all with their own styles and challenges.
But I found Hades kind of disappointing because while you get tidbits when you die, you don't actually progress the main story unless you beat Hades. I tried for tens of hours to beat Hades enough times, but eventually I got bored of fighting all the way through only to die - again. In other Supergiant games, you progressed in the main story whether or not you won the encounter. Also, I didn't find the balance of relaxed Vs intense to be as good as their other games. I talked to everyone, sure, but that just bides time being trapped in the doldrums while you buy decorative accessories rather than build up long-term meta progression as you would normally in a roguelike. Hades is the only rogue like I've played where building skill doesn't really matter that much - it's just how long you can hold out against the onslaught. Hades plays like a better version of the room battles in Bastion which were my least favourite part of that game. I've put the game aside for now, because I don't want it to be the only Supergiant game I didn't finish, but right now - that's what it is.

on the topic of all the gods in this game being hot, i am actually kinda disappointed that hephaestus doesn't show up in this game, and for some reason apollo doesn't either. but hephaestus bothers me a bit more bc the point of these gods is that they're all super attractive and yet they left out the only disabled god (and apollo for some reason. while the diversity in this game is great, i do wish that they'd extended this to disabled and fat people. also, it would've been pretty interesting to see hephaestus since he's working in tartarus and has a bad relationship with zeus, just like hades.

Wrong. I hate roguelikes and still don't find Hades any good or interesting. It suffers from the same problem all roguelikes have: Repetitiveness and difficulty.
Yes i have tried it came to the last area then quit because it became way to hard. Hades is also the most grindy roguelike i have ever played. Getting upgrades takes way to long. Like doing 2-5 runs just to get one upgrade. Then replaying it again on even more difficult levels to get more. No thank you. Hades it not for a roguelike hater like me.

This game is great, but I kinda wish they had Apollo, the God of the sun & brother to Artemis, the Goddess of the hunt (& the moon. It's just kinda weird to me that you would leave him out, but the other Gods like Hera I kinda understand, & I can't really ask for a whole extra God's worth of content in an already massive game. Anyway, I knew I would love this game so much that I couldn't help myself & I bought the physical copy of Hades along with a book of all characters & a code for the soundtrack.

honestly, i hate roguelites but. i really like Hades for all the reasons you listed. i don't exactly look forward to dying but i'm happy knowing i can improve, hear more story, and keep trying. the character dynamics in the great hall is still bustling and interactive with new dialogue.
this game is game of the year for me, simply because it changed my outlook on rogue-likes. everything seems perfectly executed for what it is. i can't help but like it

not really, its very rogue-lite, to the core, to say its for roguelike haters is really missing it. its more of a good for people who dont play rogue lites.
i liked the game, but got bored after a few hades kill. that's because, the game doesnt offer enough for me to make it something i wanna keep playing.
that's not to say i dislike the game, just that, at the end of the day, its -rogueliteness- are still the main gameplay aspect.

can we go over the fact that the Greek letters included for the aesthetic in Simone and Brian's names mean that they would be pronounced -Sphmthps- and -Brphdp, - respectively. like, y'all could have just spelled their names phonetically with the Greek alphabet, but instead, y'all replaced all vowels and a few consonants with aesthetic-look letters that don't resemble the sounds in some papyrus font version of l33t-speak

Title is false. I hate rogueli(k/t)es and i dont like Hades at all. Wasted potential, as it could be awesome arpg. Combat is fun, characters are cool ang graphics are super nice. Its just these terrible roguelike mechanics i hate, like grind, rng and dying over and over and losing almost everything. I just cant force myself to play or like it.

Don't you still lose all of your weapons or other gear in addition to main progress when you die? That's what I can't stand about rougelikes. I hear -rougelike- and skip to the next game on whatever store I'm on. I see no point in making progress and getting cool stuff when I know I'll inevitably lose it all. Major deal killer.

I bought Hades as a Christmas present for myself and then my laptop promptly decided to never work again. It was almost a decade old, so I can't complain. But I just got a new one and I'm ready to no-life the hell out of this game! Was excited to watch this while steam installs my small library of games.

Hades is good but it is not even close to my favorite roguelike, the combat doesn-t have as much depth when you consider that most of the common boons are just slightly delayed damage, or chained damage, which means the Daedalus hammer is the only boon that fundamentally changes the play style

I get that this is sort of a smaller problem since the game is a roguelike, but I really think that showing the final boss fight ruins an otherwise great review. Letting the players experience the game for themselves is just as important as telling them why the game is good or bad.

Super Giant's art style is so unique and beautiful. It's hard to believe Bastion came out 11 years ago! And it's still one of the best looking indie games of all time because of that art style and it's gorgeous fluid and characterful animation. Not to mention the voice acting.

Could y'all put a spoiler warning on this? I haven't gotten past the Hydra and have been playing pretty much spoiler-free, and so watching this was how I found out the final boss: / I know it's been out for a while but it still would have been nice to know in advance.

You know, everyone talks about how hot everyone is in Hades, but I have unconventional taste and I don't actually find very many of them attractive. I wish that there was more diversity in body types, too. Not only for that reason, obviously.

Hades is definitely -not- -the roguelike for roguelike-haters-.
I thought the game was great, until I realized that when you (easily) die you must start basically the game over.
I havent played it since

Does anyone else find the character art kind of offputting? I've always associated that style where everyone's glistening and sneering for some reason with creepy tumblr/twitter fanartists.

Best rogue like I played was mystery dungeon DX and I still didn't like it, I doubt I would have fun with hades considering it just has less content than that for the same price.

The fact they're using both Greek and Latin characters in the little names is a little horrifying, for instance, they spelt Patrick RLtrphck, and I can't quite get over that

not at all, i really enjoy rogue likes but i'm still baffled by why people hyped up hades so much. It's a fairly standard game, nothing special, 2D on top of that.

Sorry to nag you about this, but if you're gonna make a video about a greek game, the least you could do is look up how to pronounce the names of the gods

How similar is the combat to Bastion? I thought Bastion was okay but it didn't pull me in - wondering if Hades plays more or less the same.

BTW you have to beat this game 10 times in order to unlock the 'true' ending and actually finish it. Have fun with that nonsense

I liked the inclusion of a non binary character with chaos. Seeing someone else with the same pronouns as myself was refreshing
