Hm. as a part-time contrarian, I'd argue that neverending rains in cyberpunk genre started to go out of style as far as in 1995 (Mamoru Oshii did like water, but not _just_ in its precipitation form - though it can be explained by the fact that he took notes from Tarkovsky, with -Solaris- and -Stalker- by the latter as prime examples of filmed water, and since then became a tired cliche - it was too easy to make a thing look cyberpunkish by slapping rain onto it that many didn't bother make their things _feel_ cyberpunkish. Hence, I'd argue that it was a deliberate design choice by the artists behind the game: faze out a stale pure style and replace with their own flavour of it, where environment under the sunlight looks as dystopian as under the rain at night.
That being said, rain effects definitely need an improvement, totally agree on that.

Honestly I am in love with these post-mortems on the separation between the game and the source material. The clear show of consideration people like Mike Pondsmith and the artists on the game took to the style, aesthetic and meaning of the story, and the way that the restrictions and triple-a shine let those concepts down. The world, characers, and concepts that went into this game are a blast--and making the divide between the studio and the artists clear hopefully can convince people to give the support to who they feel deserve it, rather than writing the whole thing off, baby and bathwater.

This video was made for a target audience of me! I love rain generally but also specifically in videogames and I'm so disappointed by the rain of so many games. Like it almost never feels like satisfyingly juicy wetness. Or if it does the rain only happens once every 50 hours. I would pay for a video about games with the best rain effects and I unironically would buy those game just to stand in the rain and enjoy it!
Edit: please do recommend games with awesome rain where I can just stand around enjoying the rain if you know any

Fun fact: if you find the Blade Runner easter egg atop the Advocet Hotel, it will immediately start the most devastating greenish-tinted rain I have experienced in-game. And it does not stop. Sleeping doesn't stop it. Saving and reloading doesn't stop it. The only thing that stops it for me, so far, are scripted game moments where it needs to be sunny - like your date with Judy. I will continue to experiment. This small find has made the game feel 100 times more cyberpunk for me.

I think cyberpunk did something cool in that the world is not always in peak drama mode. Movies only get you for two hours and so you don-t really have to come to terms with what the characters might be like when they are bored or need to eat and sleep. Cyberpunk you are in it for a looooong time, so trying to maintain that kind of visual drama constantly would start to feel out of place. A lot of world building is making it feel like mundane actions also fit in

Seeing the bright sun in those gameplay footages feels so wrong. It really, really doesn't fit the atmosphere. Man, I didn't realize how dependent on style the Cyberpunk genre is until this vid. Cyberpunk without the darkness and the rain is just society as it is today. I demand my mood lighting, cybernetics and narrative weather because what's the point of living in a late capitalist hellhole without them

I don't know if I'm being too noob, but what is the reason for consumables in the game if there is no way to use them directly during gameplay? What are those two icons -call car- and -phone- on the HUD for? Direct access to consumables would be much more useful. As same as directly change bombs and cyberwares types would be useful.

Fanboys will literally defend this game against ANY criticism -It doesn't rain that much in california- First of all, NC still sits in Norcal, and it rains there a lot more than people would expect who've never been there, San Francisco anyone? Second, the setting and atmosphere are more important than irl weather patterns

Read NEUROMANCER. Cyberpunk 2020 and 2077 were clearly derived from the Gibson books, to the point where 2077 could arguably have been blatently plagurising it. Terminology, plot elements, hell even the name Night City all come from Neuromancer, Burning Chrome and Monalisa overdrive. Do your homework.

cool vid! it's sad how unatmospheric cyberpunk is as a whole. there's great sequences in the story, but exploring the world is so tedious because of how boring the world actually is. it's such a shame because the witcher 3 atmosphere is fantastic, can't believe they missed the mark so badly here

Yeah, uh, the 1988 release of Cyberpunk wasn't Cyberpunk 2020, that was the second edition years later. Why does Polygon keep making this same mistake? I know it's the one everyone knows because it's the version that actually saw wide release, but it's a weird mistake to make so consistently.

I watched Bladerunner in a big theatre on half a tab of acid, and oh my god, the gushing amounts of water in the last half of the film had me trip that I was wearing sodden through clothes and was completely soaked. Not quite the sci-fi psychedelic vibe i was hoping for.

0: 55 idk what you New Yorkers think but San Francisco is very rainy, and so is the bay area below it, it's right up on the coast and fog rolls in from the sea, the winter can be so rainy the sky looks grey for weeks at a time. Night City is probably near the coast.

Played 60 hours, never rained: (
Anyway, in Italy we have this proverb: -It rains, thiefy government! -
It's about the fact that for common people it's always government fault for bad things. but it's funny that in dystopies with bad politics it always rains

Yeah it didn't rain much if at all untill I got to Pacifica. The area near the damn and collapsed ferris wiheel that feels like Compton is perpetually wet but not usually raining. I've nearly 400 hours in btw. Rain is still a delightful treat in the game.

I-ve thought about this a lot. It just doesn-t have a cyberpunk feel to it without the dark, rainy, overcast neon soaked environment. The game is too often too bright and clear to be a proper cyberpunk genre game.

Firstly. Your costumes are in point!
Secondly. The reason effects don't look good when 3rd person driving but they look great in 1st person.
Addendum. I don't think I've seen that avoid rain after 180 hours. :O

I fear when my son is 25 and I have to talk to him seriously, years of videos like this will result in conversations revolving around the roundness of basketball courts. And I'll have science to back me up. Sigh.

I have nothing but disdain for Cyberpunk 2077 precisely because of that messy, messy, messy release, but if you ask me the question -is X wet enough? - you KNOW I am going to be giving you my full attention.

Most of the community agrees something is wrong. The majority of the time it does rain you can't even see it. It's buggy. The weather also seems to be stuck in sunny weather 95% of the time.

The word she danced around so much that it was simply painful: camouflage. Why say -camouflaged- when you could explain what camouflage is using an entire sentence - weird choice but ok

I've spent many many hours doing the random side jobs in Cyberpunk 2077 and it literally NEVER rains. Only some story missions make it rain for a while. It's definitely broken.

Haven't played it yet, and I'm really looking forward to either a mode or a mod that sets a permanent night, with almost persistent rain. And desaturates a lot of the color.

How much does it rain in Cyberpunk 2077?
Can you get enough Blade Runner experience even without playing on PC with mods that change weather?
