Why drifting is the coolest part of any racing game

some errors in this video
1. drifting is not really faster in touge, or rally. touge isn't necessarily competitive, and its often just more fun. in rallyings case, its just harder to keep traction, but it would be different from competitive drift where you slide on purpose and slide for a long time. drifting often happens by accident in any form of autosport, especially in the rain. even autocross racers, who have the tightest turns, in the rain, dont drift on purpose to get the fastest times.
2. you dont necessarily need to mod your car to drift, anything rwd, preferably manual transmission, without too much electronic stability systems can be drifted, reasonably easily. if you want to slide fast and as long as possible like a competitive drifter, its a different story. but in general you can buy any stock sports car and go do some drifting.

Not wanting to be a spoilsport, but making a compelling drift handling is far easier than making a compelling grip handling.
Drifting is extremely fun, don't get me wrong, but I do miss those older games, like GRID Autosport, Test Drive Unlimited, the earlier NFS, to name a few, where precise grip driving is key and the controls were made to work on keyboard, pad and wheel.
A quick look at the Steam racing game page and it's full of Drifting games, I wish we had as many -gripping- options as we have drifting.

Here-s how I describe it:
NASCAR or F1 is just watching people in fast cars driving fast. Whoever finds the right position and time to floor it harder than the others will win. That-s kinda bland.
But drifting is as described in the video: a controlled loss of control, and a race that involves drifting means knowing when and where to floor it, AND how to execute an incredibly difficult maneuver to round a corner. It-s just more flavorful, and the skill ceiling is higher.

Star Wars Squadrons? People have been doing it as far back as the original Wing Commander. It was called an -afterburner slide-. Some of the manuals from that series even told you how to do it.
Of course in a space sim you're not racing, you're fighting. You don't do a slide to save speed, you do it because it's the same thing as circle-strafing: you zap the enemy while avoiding their fire.

I-ve played racing games for years and I still don-t understand why drifting is cool when I-d rather race/drive the car not take it sideways. But if you like drifting more power to you it-s just not for me as I-d rather race the car on a race track at high speed while hearing the engine screaming in ears as I accelerate down the straightaway that-s what I love tbh.

man this video was a great watch, although through at least half of it my physics student brain was thinking about how much more in-depth i could get about the specific physics behind drifting; its really all about static vs sliding friction and normal forces that determines why and when drifting does/doesnt work

I never really cared about track racing sims, but rally sims are great because the entire time you're just like -oh god-, and there's something zen about trying over and over until you somehow manage to finesse chaotically barrelling down a mountain (or just surviving 15 seconds, set your own goals)

Another reason why drifting has becoming increasingly popular for the past decade is the relatively low cost to participate and the amount of seat time you get. You can spend a whole weekend drifting for the same price as a 3 hour HPDE session.

Drifting definitely only exists because it's fun to do (Literally ANY kind of sliding around is hella fun, with wheels or without, not because it's faster under any scenario. That was a pretty surprising episode of Mythbusters, admittedly.

I drifted a real go kart on a snowy day once! It was so much freaking fun! I could never try to drift a full size car; but any time I-m on a go kart track or in a go kart on neighborhood roads, I-ll give it a try. Its too fun not to lol!

what a wonderful explanation of drifting, you really packed it all in there and kept it super real life while still celebrating the weird history video games have with drifting generally. great work comrade drift.

Thankfully many people will buy Art of Rally after this video. Clearly my 2020 goty in terms of the fun I had with it. Such an underrated game, I hope they do a sequel with real licensing!

Art of Rally is such a great game. It's truly unfortunate more people don't play it. So rewarding to nail a fast run, and the music/atmosphere/vibe is so good. Tons of cars and tracks too.

I learned so much from this! I saw the clips of the real life drifters from Japan and immediately knew where this was going: Initial D. But I had no idea it was inspired by a real person!

5: 05 that's what the broke guys do. Most people install limited slip differentials (or LSDs for short) that way the diff locks up under power but not under normal driving cases

So thankful i stumbled upon a drift competition in tokyo once. It was one of the coolest things id ever seen, even tho it was about 100ft from a lifesized Gundam.

You're dead wrong about the place we learned it though. Need for Speed Underground 2 was the place that lit so many peoples burning love for drifting.

Drifting is cool but it won't win you the race, you actually go slower drifting than you would slowing down and taking a turn calmly

Keiichi Tsushida and Pluspy must be why the AE86 is used in Initial D!
Edit: Immediate confirmation is always nice.

I am begging someone at Polygon to look into the BOAR DRIFTING of Nier Gestalt/Replicant now, it's so perfectly absurd.
